The Twins reassigned Niko Goodrum to St. Paul today. Because he has an "assignment clause" in his minor league contract, he has the opportunity to go to another team if they offer him a major league roster spot. This is the same clause that allowed Danny Coulombe to get a major league job with Baltimore and flourish. MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Rays have interest in adding Goodrum.

I'd have to think a low to middling prospect would be a great return for Goodrum, if he's getting playing time in Minnesota it's likely bad news all around.  From what I hear, cash considerations would be greatly appreciated as well.

I don’t believe, and I may be mistaken, that there is any chance of compensation when a guy is available as a pick-up off Minor League deal? The Twins get the option of putting him on 26-man if he gets an offer is what it sounds like. Really seems to be a moot point since it appears he’s not capable of playing in the Show over the past 5 years - IMO, he’s off to Korea after he asks the Twins for a release in the upcoming weeks.

From the mlbtraderumors.com article, the player is offered to all 29 teams and if any are interested that player is traded to them. Going from the Coulombe experience last year, the Orioles were willing to assume Coulombe's contract, but gave the Twins nothing. That would seem to be a standard for such a deal, especially if the player is to get more than the minimum if they are in the major leagues. If more than one team would be willing to assume Goodrum's contract, perhaps the Twins could get $$$ or some type of prospect in return.

Damn, Montgomery just signed with the Snakes.

That Goodrum cash may have been enough to push Joe P into a deal.

Oh wait, it's Tampa.  Nevermind, it won't be much cash, but it may include a couple more pages from the "How To Win on the Cheap" tome.

I think it was Phil Miller said no compensation on Twitter.  Would have been nice to get a little cash or something but this probably happens much more than we realize league wide.

So, a prospect is essentially a zero chance, I think we would agree. Why some team would WANT a guy with Goodrum’s history is beyond anything that seems real. Paying for him (a suitor), after his past few seasons & then .103 BA or whatever this Spring just seems like a non issue for Twins mgmt.
