Twins will possibly sign a FA starter? If not, they will definitely trade for a starter.

Ryan at 160 innings is probable

Ober at 145 innings is probable

Lopez at 180 innings is probable

Paddack at 110 innings is probable

Varland at 90 innings is probable

New Guy at 140 innings is probable

Festa - SWR - Headrick - Winder combining for 16 starts at 5 innings, another 80 innings, is probable.

That’s 905 innings from starters…….don’t think this is blue sky whatsoever……….seems once team picks up a guy they are set!

Lopez - Ryan - Ober - Paddack - Varland - (New Guy)

Stewart - Jax - Thielbar - Funderburk - Winder - Alcala - Duran - ……. and a combination of “whoever’s” to get us to August……….Canterino to throw 20 innings from August 15 to October 1st………..Varland to the Pen again by September 10th ……..seems like a plausible plan.

Festa - Headrick - SWR to supplement rotation as needed.

Just wonderful to see guys get healthy and be ready to resume their careers!

Paddack has come back STRONG. Surprisingly so. But let's not get carried away. OK? He's known to have a great change. Any sort of high 90 or 100 FB was an illusion of a few IP. The reality is the FO has liked him for some time. When they acquired him, they immediately tweaked his 3rd pitch and there were some solid results before his elbow gave out.

He has surprised everyone in his brief comeback, but he's just not going to throw 97-100 as a SP. But mid 90's consistently with his change and a new breaking ball could make him anything from a #5 to #2. But it's still a wait and see.

Canterino is a mystery to me. Despite limited IP, he has been so good, so dominate, that you just have to keep him as a SP don't you? I'm NOT comparing, but I think of arms like Randy Johnson who struggled for a few years before becoming something special.

So while the Twins have stated they still see him as a SP, are they wrong? I believe he's 26yo in 2024. OLD for the usual prospect status. But what if he's good, maybe really good, for 5-6yrs as a starter?

But even though doctors say he can go 120 IP for 2024, are those IP best used as a SP or as a bullpen piece for the Twins?

I HATE moving a potential SP arm to the pen too soon. And I couldn't care less if the next quality SP for the Twins was 22yo or 26yo. I only care how good they are.

I don't want to move Canterino to the pen now. For no other reason than letting him build himself up again. Plus the factor that he might blow everyone away as a SP option.

I guess I just don't know his future and what to do with him. But I'd keep him as a starter for now, just to build up IP, confidence, control and get ready for tomorrow.

Very good article! Obviously, both of these pitchers have great stuff and tons of potential. Hoping they can stay healthy will be a concern, plus monitoring the number of innings they throw. Not sure if Canterino could still be a starter or not. Maybe we can put off that decision for a while and see how he adapts to the bullpen. In any case, hoping for a healthy and productive year from both players.

Ummmmm . . .  the Twins effectively had 6 starters for last year,

I would argue the Twins had 7 (Lopez, Gray, Ryan, Mahle, Maeda, Ober and Varland) and only went 8 deep. (Keuchel getting 6 starts)

As of today they have Lopez, Ober, Ryan, Paddack and Varland.  which is a couple short of last year. IMO the Twins are far short of last year. I hope they do something to make it up.

As long as our top 5 don’t avoid injury, it will be nice to give the youngsters some spot starts. The FO may wait to the trade deadline to do a deal. Maybe 🤔

Sounds expensive. They need more depth, get it now.

I'll take the liberty of letting @DocBauerspeak for me, "And I couldn't care less if the next quality SP for the Twins was 22yo or 26yo. I only care how good they are."

it seems to me with the odds of drafting and developing a blue chip starter being what they are this front office likes to supplement that with developing projectable later round types which may take longer to get there. So they start at a little older age, does that really matter?

I wasn't responding to the next quality SP. I was responding to the "give the youngsters some spot starts"

The Twins don't have any youngsters Starting Pitchers on the 40 Man, except SWR that was my point. I was asking about what youngsters he was talking about. (Maybe he was referring to Festa, Rays, Lewis or others)

I was referring to swr, canterino. Festa. Even JB if he can get his stuff to work. I know they arent all 22 and arent on the 40 man but we move guys in and out all the time with options so that isnt a big deal. We just need 1 solid fill in from time to time and that buys us time to get the stud for October to pair with Pablo. Yes I’d prefer to have a stud signed yesterday but that isnt realistic.
