People are acting like he's throwing 3 innings a game. And it's so clear they should put Ober in there instead who has literally never, in his entire life, held up to a starter's workload. Never. Not once. You can't say Maeda isn't holding up if your answer to that problem is replacing him with a guy who's thrown 100 innings in 1 year since he was 18. He's 27. How much more evidence do we need that he can't hold up? I'm not arguing that Ober is the answer. Please copy the post from this thread where I said that. I'm saying the type of incentive-laden contract that Maeda signed with a relatively low base salary is an outlier of a contract, and I'm not too worried about quality free agents passing the Twins over if they relegate Maeda to the bullpen soon. If they miss out on an older has-been recovering from TJ that requires a Maeda-type contract just to make the risk more palatable, I'm not going to lose much sleep over it.

Again, the Dodgers were doing exactly the same thing with him with their young starters YEARS ago. You don't like Ober? Fine, give Varland the job, but you're exaggerating the situation. No one is calling Ober a world beater or Maeda a scrub, but don't promise jobs to ANYONE in pro sports. Maeda was good out of the pen for the Dodgers, reducing his innings and using him as needed could be a significant asset to this team. A 27 year old who has never thrown a full starter's workload. Never. Not 1 single time in his entire life has Bailey Ober thrown an MLB starter's workload. Pretending he's suddenly capable of doing that is crazy. No, they weren't. They never once gave Maeda less than 20 starts in any season, and only once gave him fewer than 25. 2 and 20 are pretty far apart. They absolutely were not doing what people are suggesting here and simply making him a reliever more or less out of the gate (people wanted it straight out of ST). I'm not exaggerating the situation. It's his 3rd start! He went 5 and 6 innings in his first 2 starts. The idea that he's not holding up is flat out ignoring reality. There's 5+ more months of the season. Turning 1 of your 8 possible big league starters into a pen piece in April is not good roster management. Ober, Varland, SWR are all going to get numerous starts this year. Baseball is a long season. Fans overreactions to small sample size is why FOs don't care about fan reactions.

You think it was because of his performance with them the last few years or because he's owed a ton of money?

Contracts matter is the point. If you guys want to get into semantics feel free if it helps anyone feel better about things. Players contracts influence playing time. People don't have to like it. It doesn't make it "right." But contracts (amounts, incentives, whatever) absolutely influence playing time at the start of seasons.

You said fine if the team thought he was one of the best five starters. When the Twins think someone will be more successful than Maeda then we will see another guy take that spot. I'm equally concerned with Mahle as Maeda but believe both have earned their spots in the rotation. As far as any contract incentives, the team just gave Maeda a fair chance to show his skills at earning the rotation spot.

He made a nice play to get the 3rd out at first, but then went down in obvious pain, eventually walked off the field under his now power, and didn't come out for the next inning.

I'm pretty glad MadBum didn't sign with the Twins.

No one did either, the entirety of the argument seemed to be the hesitation about giving an aging pitcher who took extra long to recover from TJ surgery a spot in the bullpen instead of the rotation. Which many people were suggesting long before this season ever started. But worse, you keep moving the goalposts. You first were arguing that they have to start Maeda because of the incentives. Then only after being shown how ridiculous that was, you decided the fight would be that Maeda is a better pitcher than Ober.
