Florimon Day to Day

Over/under on when he is ready to player regularly again?

Really, there are few options to call up that would make a difference.

They don't need a middle infielder with both Carroll and Escobar on the roster.

On the 40 man the choices are few...

Herrmann? Robertson? Gibson (Hernandez to pen)? Benson? Pinto?

If his injury isn't long term it probably doesn't make sense to mess with the 40 on Colabello or Thomas. If those guys come up, the Twins need to believe they are there or the long haul.

With so few options, I wouldn't blame the Twins if they wait and see how he is doing early next week.

What the Twins should do and will do are totally different. Florimon though he has played good isn't a Mauer, therefore if its going to be more then 4-5 days he should be DL'd. With lack of options, I'd either go Hermann because he can play numerous positions or go for bullpen help with Robertson, Wood or Thielbar. I think Gibson for Hernadez needs to be a heads up move because if the Twins view Hernadez as a starter he needs to be a starter if they view him as a bullpen arm he should go to the minors and find his role in a bullpen. The Twins have options in the middle infield, Carrol can play SS, Escobar can play SS, Dozier can play it in a pinch and if the sky is falling Plouffe can slide over there as well.

I wouldn't even go 4-5 with him. If it's going to be more than 2-3 just DL him now and bring in a body that can help.

Great. I really hope this isn't a case where it lingers for 10 days then they finally decide to DL him and get a guy up for 3 games before he is ready. They used to do that with Punto all-the-****ing-time.

Well, my first thought when I heard this is "great, he'll be out for 10 days and then placed on the DL". And that very well could happen, but really there aren't any good options to replace him on the roster right now. The bullpen doesn't need another arm, we already have a Utility IF, actually several of them. We are having a hard time finding ABs for the OF/DH/1B we have on the roster now. Seems to me that this is the one time we might as well wait and see if can get back on the field. My opinion might be different if we had an IF in the minors that looked like they could help, but I don't really see that at this point.

Gibson. This is a great excuse to bring him up and let him pitch on Monday. We could even keep Hernandez up as a gesture that there is still a hope for success. Just letting him skip a start and see what Kyle does. Diamond is the only pitcher that inspires true confidence in me that we are going to win. Correia still scares me at times although he did get through yesterday. I want a little more hope in the rotation. The current guys could do with a little reminder that there are 4-5 guys looming just over the horizon.

Gibson is 24-25 years old, with a pitching limit this year, the Twins shouldn't be waiting until he is 100% ready, he is at a point where they have to figure out if he is the answer. Its just stupid, its at the point where it doesn't even make sense. Lets let Gibson use 75 of his 130 innings at AAA and then lets evaluate him with 55 innings for the Twins, really going to get a solid evaluation from that.

or go for bullpen help with Robertson, Wood or Thielbar.

Wood's had a setback, to whatever extent that factors into the thinking.

I was just looking at relief pitchers who are on the 40 man roster in AAA. Wood had been doing well before having a rough outing, maybe that was due to the setback injury wise. The bullpen obviously needs some help, as its been taxed pretty heavily in the week and has racked up some hefty innings already. I'd probably go Thielbar then as Robertson is more of a 1 guy type of pitcher 1 inning tops where Thielbar is more of a setup man who is a lefty. I don't know if there are any other options really available for bullpen help at AAA. It doesn't have to be for a long period but for 10-14 days where there is an extra arm out there can help quite a bit.

He's already closer to 26 than he is to 25.

I think that just proves my point more, if he was 21 I might agree with there thinking even 23 I could see it but at his age (and innings limit) him at AAA is stupid whether he is ready or not, he needs MLB exposure.

I would look at this as more of a gift. For those of us who want to see Escobar every day, we just got the chance. I hope he runs with it.

As for Gibson, I really don't understand why people think he should be called up. He's not going to finish the year here due to an innings limit, and while having some good starts, he's hardly dominating. Why waste the service time? He can still develop in AAA, so personally I'd leave him there with the plan of handing him the job full time in 2014.

I think he should be called up because I think he is one of the Twins best 5 starters.

He is already past the point where he will get a full year of service for this season. Are you suggesting the Twins wait until May 2014 to get an additional year? He is already under control into his 30s.

I would give him some extra rest following his high pitch count start earlier this week. What was Glynn thinking leaving him in there? Maybe there isn't an inning limit plan and worry about his arm. If there is, can the Twins trust Glynn to keep his pitch count and innings down?

In response to the question about Glynn leaving Gibson in, the Red Wings had played a 16 inning game the day before. All pitches and innings aren't the same. While Gibson exceeded 100 pitches, he was cruising (comparatively). Many here have lobbied to have Gibson on the roster by Monday so that he could start with normal rest instead of Hernandez. I don't think that will happen, but if Gibson backs up this start with another very good one (and Hernandez struggles again), I think we'll see Gibson before the month is over.

There's already talk in the Twins clubhouse that Hernandez is on "call" for today and tomorrow in the shorthanded pen. I think it's near the point of 50-50 odds that Gibson gets the spot start on Monday.

I hope it's not a spot start, but rather the beginning of establishing a second young frontline pitcher (the other being Diamond).
