Payroll is 38.50% under budget

Wanted to think about what a steeper reload/rebuild might look like. What if Kepler were traded, Gio were traded or non-tendered, and the Fo slashed payroll.

much less fun

A lower payroll makes sense, for sure. If the Twins want to slash payroll they don't really need Boxberger, Leon, or Inglesias though, saving near $6M. They could also trade Gray, Mahle, Maeda, Paddack, and J. Lopez for an additional $32 million in savings. Falvey seems unlikely to part with his pet acquisitions but I do think a lower payroll, as you suggested, is possible.

This would be the worst possible direction they could go, in my opinion. Either blow it up or go big. Returning with darn near the same team next year would be a disaster in my eyes. If you're going young, go young. If you're trying to really compete in 2023 then you need to add some veterans significantly better than Iglesias, Leon, and Boxberger. This team just wastes a season of service time for the young guys while not actually competing. Time to S or get off the pot and pick a direction. If they're not significantly upgrading the roster don't stop with Gio and Kepler in trades. Send Mahle and Gray back out. Move Polanco. See what you can get for Maeda, Lopez, and Thielbar. Blow it up and start over or actually invest in going for it.

Agreed, but this FO is laser-beam focused on incremental moves. It’s not their MO to make big roster moves. Signing Correa to effectively a 1 year deal rocked our world!

Totally agree, I just really want them to finally be aggressive. Hopefully they feel their jobs are on the line and that sparks some boldness.

I don't see Duran going back to starting.   I have seen a lot of people saying it, but he was very good/dominant in that late inning role.   I also don't see Ober going to pen unless they sign/trade for someone else and he is out of options.

What if Duran could do, what we saw for 60 innings in 2022, for 90 to 100 innings in 2023 and 120 to 140 innings in 2024?

it’s happened before, albeit rarely.

I am not saying he couldn't, but you would then be creating a hole in the bullpen.
