To be fair, many starters aren’t even given the chance. Managers are terrified of that third time around the order. Any baserunners from the fifth inning on give managers panic attacks for most of their starters. I wonder how many starters have the mentality of “I just need to go 5”?

Agreed, and pitching philosophy these days doesn't lend to it either.  All of the max effort style and lack of actually learning the art of pitching simply doesn't make going 5+ regularly realistic for the majority of guys.  And that creates the need for the bullpen going 4+ innings a night.  Which isn't sustainable for most teams either.

It's a very circular problem.  It's hardly even realistic to have a top tier rotation OR a top tier bullpen for all but a handful of teams, let alone both.

I always thought that bringing in Correa at $35mil/year while the rest of the roster is "slightly" below that would be an overall detriment to the team as a whole. Time for the $35mil man to lead the way. BTW the entire Pirates payroll is $39mil. That is kind of the state of pro sports in general where some players make as much as an entire team. Not good.
