gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 Looks like the Big 10, Pac 12, and ACC are working together to stop the SEC from stealing more teams and also try to get an understanding on the changing nature of amateur athletics. The SC's ruling on athletes pay is going to change college football a lot, I think, although the obvious reason is the destruction of the Big 12 by the SEC. From googling, it looks like the alliance will lead to one less Big 10 game each year but the Gophers (and everyone else) will have a rotating schedule against both a Pac-12 and ACC team each year, which I like a lot. But the alliance also says that the three conferences will focus on issues like social and racial justice, academics, structure of the NCAA, and diversity. I wonder if they'll flex their muscles and force big changes in some of those areas. It could be pretty interesting.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 The conferences are supposed to be about much more than just football....but I'm not holding my breath that anything real changes for the athletes. The destruction of the Big 12 is sad to me....but not surprising. The US is all about consolidation of power into as few hands as possible. The NCAA is no different.

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 Yeah, put me in the "I'll believe it when I see it" College athletics and the exploitation they have gotten away with for decades is bordering on deserving the word "evil". It's corrupt as hell. I'm glad some things are moving in the right direction but it's long overdue and it had to be forced on them by the courts. They get zero trust/hope from me until results start happening.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 College athletics as we know has changed forever. I’m glad athletes get compensation for their likeness and endorsements. However, most universities won’t be able to keep their programs going in the foreseeable future. Programs like Ohio State will keep going status quo offering the world to their recruits. They’re the only event in Columbus, OH. Good luck to programs like Purdue in 30,000 population West Lafayette, IN recruiting for their endorsement opportunities. This rule also applies to every sport in college. I spoke to one of my former colleagues at Minnesota State who decided to resign and take a job in the corporate world. Recruiting D1 hockey players will be too convoluted moving forward. What’s the bigger pull for kids? A couple of autograph sessions and maybe a sponsorship with select restaurants in Mankato, MN? Or multiple endorsement opportunities in Minneapolis? Hard to compete now that the cat is out of the bag.

Agree with this - giving Big Ten teams a slot to schedule a home / home against Pac-10 and ACC teams might let us see more interesting games than the usual 2/3 non-conference directional university teams coming to town for a paycheck. I don’t know about the higher goals, but it’s also obvious that the conferences want to maintain a voice in TV contracts and revenue streams rather than be forced into whatever ESPN / ABC will offer for national games.

Agreed, ignoring everything else, it will be fun to see Ohio State/Oregon or such during the pre-season.
Sousy Verified Member Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 I was going to use the U. of Minnesota football schedule as an example of what might be an improvement, but it looks like Minnesota already has future home/home schedules with North Carolina (ACC) and Colorado (Pac-12) on the schedule. Wisconsin has home/home set up with Alabama and two offsites with Notre Dame. Maybe it's only Iowa that is locked into an annual Iowa / Iowa State game and two directional schools.
