Twins Release Minor League Players

According to recent Transactions posted in BASEBALL AMERICA, the Twins have cut ties with numerous minor league players, especially from their lower levels.

Wow, 34 players now gone from the system. Should make it easier to get some work in for the remaining 150 or so when/if they have an instructional camp later this fall.

 

Did see a couple surprises, at least for me with Widell heading the list. A bit surprised to see Gryz and what, six other catchers on the list. Must have a number of good catchers coming up from the DSL.

Biggest surprises for me: 

 

Nate Hadley... put up really good numbers in his pro debut after the draft, including at Cedar Rapids. He's had some injury history at UCLA, so he's a little older, but I think his numbers warranted another shot. He signed with the Milwaukee Milkmen for next season. 

 

Taylor Grzelakowski was finally going to be healthy and able to catch again in 2020. Would have been interesting to see what he could have done with the bat with his ankles healthy.

 

Parker Phillips has a ton of power. A late-round pick, but again, but has big power. That said, the Twins have a lot of that type of player, including Aaron Sabato.

His was the only name I recognized from this list - just can't keep up with all the minor leaguers and rely on Seth Stohs to keep me informed.  But this is part of MLBs effort to diminish the minors and start shuffling more to the independent leagues which do not cost them anything.

Also remember that the Twins didn't release anyone throughout the 2020 season, from April through August. In that time, likely 25-30 players could have been released regardless. That doesn't account for the fact that they are losing an affiliate (roughly 30 players). 

 

There are a lot of conversations going on in terms of minor league futures. There are a lot of rumors about where the Twins affiliates will be (or won't be) in 2021. Will be interesting to see when those decisions are made and the fallback from it.

We still have to see who from the roster of minor league free agents signed for 2020 are no more. Yes, they lose an affiliate. But the Twins also have an investment in many of these players that will now move to indy ball, if the guys wish to continue playing.

All of them. Minor League deals with six-year veterans are one year. The only question mark would be if they signed any guys during this season, which I doubt. Like MLB free agents, they become free agents at the end of the World Series.
