Twins 2020 Payroll

If Cron is brought back he should be platooned. His numbers versus left handers are good. Wonder if Cave can play 1B some. Mitch Moreland is a free agent at the end of the year and would be a good platoon partner. Just based on roster space and cost I would try Cave some at 1B

I doubt this will happen but I'd like to see us sign Jose Abreu!

Here is something to ponder for discussion...which player has more trade value going into the 2020 off-season...

Eddie Rosario, Trevor Larnach, or Alex Kiriloff.

Prospects are just like lottery tickets. Everyone expects them to be great and most of the time they fail.

I have always been a fan of Rosario since he was called up, but I would not be against moving him in a deal for prospects. It would be a way to reload and keep the payroll in check. Eddie can make you lose your mind with his lack of patience at the plate, his wild throws, and at times lack of hustle out of the box.

Jake definitely gets a QO or a 3-4 year deal. I'd like them to make a big splash and get a guy guy like Cole, but I'm not holding my breath. I could see one of Pineda or Gibson being brought back too even if they did.

The window is open, so I expect the FO to follow through on their promise to spend money.

Oh, and Cron gets arb. I could see non tendernig him if there was a capable replacement in the high minors, but there's not yet.

I could see offering Jake a QO. Then you at least get a draft pick when he turns it down. If he accepts the QO I might be tempted to try for a short term deal and if it can't be reached a 1 year deal would be fine.

Should the team then have an interest in trading Mitch, and couldn't we expect a pitching haul for such a bargain catcher? Guys like Grandal are commanding 14-15M. I am not advocating this, but seems we have quite an asset here at $500K.

No reason to trade or extend Garver. A catcher's career can be over in an instant with all the concussions they seem to get.

You would think they would have learned by the Mauer extension. Garver could play 1st but you can always seem to find guys like Cron for $5M a year to hit 30 homers.

Also see Phil Hughes.

I don't think the Twins were planning on picking up the $7.5M option for Perez next year, but the fact he was left off the ALDS roster just about guarantees Perez will not be back.

Perez had 1.9 fWAR and .2 bWAR this year (seems like a really large discrepancy). Devin Smeltzer accumulated .5 fWAR and .7 bWAR in about 1/3rd of Perez's innings this year, so I think he would be the logical replacement at this point for Perez.

Super small sample size, but Randy Dobnak was worth .8 fWAR and .6 bWAR in 28.1 innings.

The Twins paid $3,795,416 (according to Spotrac) for Perez, Dobnak, and Smeltzer to throw a combined 242.2 innings this season. Assuming Dobnak and Smeltzer can combine to throw 242.2 between themselves next year, the Twins will have an additional $2.5M (assuming $600k for each Smeltzer and Dobnak in 2020) to spend. Every dollar helps!

Yeah, Perez won't be back...which is just fine.

Bolded:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

So you'd waste the best pitching prospect in the Twins system in relief? And you'd put Stewart, Smeltzer, Thorpe, or Gonsalves in the rotation?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The Twins can do two things with Graterol. They can play him like Santana, start him in the pen, have him throw multiple innings. Pump him up to being an occasional starter. Either way, chances of him reaching 120 innings would be slim. Even if they sent him to the minors exclusively as a starter, he wouldn't get 150 innings next year. That is the rub.

Yes, would like to see him start, too.

Agreed. The 2020 question seems to be...have him for a full season as a reliever...or half a season as a starter. I'll go with full season as a reliever...but that might not be the right choice for his long-term value. It will be interesting to see what develops.
