Do the Minnesota Twins exercise Nelson Cruz's contract option in 2020?

The only problem with extending or adding another option year - the Twins have several potential DHs alone or as part of a rotation (semi-off-days).   Sano, Larnach, Rooker, Tortuga  . . .

Come on now. There isn't a hitter on this years team or available througout baseball you would sit Nelson Cruz for in order to get playing time. 

 

Cruz is the DH on this team, period. Larnach, Rooker, Tortuga. All of them will be lucky to even stick in the league. We don't worry about rookies needing a spot when the hitter they are replacing are among the best in the game. 

 

Sano is also able to move whomever the Twins will employ off 1B before they sit a guy like Cruz in order to play any of the three you mentioned in the next couple years.

What Cruz is doing is amazing, but father time is undefeated.

There is simply no upside to trying to extend or tack on years at his age, IMO. It's not like some team is going to come in and blow away a 41 year old with some crazy long term contract offer. If he likes it here, and the money is fair, then nothing stands in the way of going year to year with him.
