Where's a Jack Morris when you need him!

I just became a new member and had to choose a "nickname" as part of my new profile.  I aptly chose the name "weneedjackmorris".  I think this says it all.  The division IMHO is all but lost.  It's clear our pitching (for the most part) is running on fumes.  And despite all the talk about breaking offensive records left and right, the Twins (again IMHO) will be in a fight for their wild card lives before the season is over. It's unfortunate, but simply part of playing in a 162 game season.  No one gives out awards for a fast start to the season if you're packing your bags when the playoffs start.  So, where is Jack Morris when we need him?!!  Oh, the good ole days...

Welcome to TwinsDaily.

OK... Now I love Jack Morris. The guy gave me a World Series victory that Game 7 with an unbelievable gutty performance against the Braves.

I get the reference... Jack Morris was a Man's Man on that mound with it all on the line.

However... as you say "Running on Fumes" and reference Jack Morris in the same breath.

I feel it is my duty to remind you that on July 28th, 1991. Jack Morris couldn't finish the third inning as he gave up 8 runs to a well below .500 Brewers team. We needed a win that day. The White Sox, A's and Rangers were breathing down our neck.

In his next start on August 2nd. He was beaten by Bob Welch and the Oakland A's allowing the A's to creep even closer.

In his next start on August 7th... The Angels knocked him out as his ERA rose above 4. All in the heat of a pennant race.

I'm not slamming Jack Morris... I wouldn't dream of it. He gave me something special, I owe him.

I'm just typing this to remind everyone that Jack Morris produced some gulps in August before being the Jack Morris we remember in October.

We do need Jack Morris... We need Kyle Gibson... We Need everyone.  :)

Once again... Welcome to Twinsdaily.

True, we need everyone!  And I remember well Jack Morris's struggles in late summer of 1991.  Perhaps guys like Berrios, Odorizzi, Gibson, Perez etc. will become heroes in the fall?  But I'm not optimistic from what I've seen in terms of trending. And having a fatigued bull pen, despite additions of Romo and Dyson (now on DL), isn't helping.  BTW, I would take a HoF'r Jack Morris over any of the starters we have right now simply knowing only his stats for that year.  Record of 18 - 12.  Strikeouts 163.  ERA 3.43.  And all at the age of 36 (with 13 years of experience!).

But that's the thing.  You didn't know his stats that year until the end of that year.  He was a 36 year old coming off prior two seasons of 21-32 and an ERA of around 4.7.    When his ERA crept back up over 4 as Riverbrian stated I am guessing you weren't saying this is the guy that is going to lead us to a world series victory and get into the HOF.   More like,"well he gave us a good few months but stick a fork in him cuz he is done.   Give us more Tapani and Erickson"   Give Morris credit for what he did the rest of that year and the following year but at the time you didn't know what he would do.   His year was basically where Berrios and Odorizzi and maybe Pineda are likely to finish.   So, yeah, I would take another one or two of him.    Of course these Twins might struggle to the finish and miss the playoffs.   I said at the beginning of the year, all I ever want is meaningful September games and I think I will get that.   Welcome to TD.

Though the 1991 Morris lasted ten innings, the 2019 Morris probably would last around ten pitches.

Kind of like "what would Elvis be doing if he were alive today?"   Answer:   Scratching and clawing at his coffin trying to get out.

Obviously we'd all take the 36 year old Jack Morris performance in our current rotation.

But unless your time machine is super-precise, and you can guarantee the rigors of the time travel process would not alter Jack's performance from that year, you've got a good chance of getting the 33-35 year old or 37+ year old performances of Jack Morris instead, which would be no improvement on the current starters, and quite possibly a significant downgrade. :)
