Twins send slumping fan favorite Willians Astudillo down to minors

Smeltzer is possibly an intriguing option for the bullpen, given how well he does the first two times through a batting order. Also, Luis Arraez is the most obvious substitute for Astudillo. He's nearly as versatile and hits (much) better.

Dear, Astudillo

Pitch selection... Work on it.

Be more selective...  you'll be back.

It's up to you.

Sincerely,

The beautiful thing about depth is that allows for ugly moments of sending down a major league talent.

Astudillo and Arraez have options... so does Cave. This is beautiful. Astudillo needs some work... go work on it and bring him back when we need him.

I stand by Astudillo and strongly feel that he can hit... if he can just stop swinging at the pitchers pitch... his value will shoot through the roof as a defensively capable catcher who can hit better than the other catchers.

Don't mess around with Astudillo... Fix him and reap the rewards.

I believe he is a quality hitter with decent power. I think he us at least close to what we saw last season and the start of this one. But I think timing and recognition have been off since his IL stint. He has absolutely been flailing at pitches well out of the zone.

He CAN hit and make good contact. He just needs an little re-set. He will most definitely be back.

I hope the organization takes advantage of this opportunity to work on Astudillo's defense behind the plate.

If he's going to stick in MLB, it'll be because he's competent behind the plate, IMO. He can be quite valuable as a quirky .750 OPS hitter if he spends most of his time behind the plate. Not so much at third base.

Not sure .750 is a realistic number for him. He won’t ever have an obp much higher than .320. I don’t see him as much more than a .400 slg ever. And right now, he’s no where near that.

Yeah, maybe, but the point stands whether the number is .700, .725, or .750. That plays as a backup catcher or spot start in the field but not as a third baseman.
