next to nothing from sano and buxton; escobar and dozier long gone; eddie r injured (and .622/.669 ops for july/august). that's more than half the expected lineup. maybe the twins are lucky to be doing as well as they are?

Twins announcers are saying that because the Twins had to play an extra game in 2008 and 2009 to determine who went to the playoffs, MLB decided to make the one game playoff between the #1 and #2 Wild Card teams that made the playoffs.

Not sure it was causal, but it certainly informed the decision.

Kind of like now NFL overtime isn't decided by a field goal on the first posession.

It's about money and it's dumb.  Should be a 2 out of 3 scenario, which would make them even more money AND actually be fair.

I'm with ya on the lack of fairness of the current system.

But i am too lazy to think through any better proposal today...

Causing the division winners to wait a week.

Now that would be dumb.

Yup, 2 to 3 games would equal a whole week off...

Season ends Sunday, best 2 out of 3 could happen Mon night game, Wed night game, Thurs day game (team with better record gets Wed and Thursday games at home). The #2 and #3 Division leaders could start their series Thursday, and the #1 seed would start their series on Friday, playing the winner of the Wild Card series.  Would make it hard on the Wild Card team travel wise, but not anymore than a regular season does. And of course, last year the division winners played their first games on, wait for it, Thursday and Friday. So in my scenario, the division leaders could start playing their first series the same days they did last year. No extra days of waiting. Even IF they decided to add one more day off to what they had last year (and they wouldn't have to), it's hardly a big deal. Much less fair than having 95+ win teams get one shot in the playoffs...

What happens when teams tie for the bottom wild card?

What happens when teams tie for the bottom wild card?

Now THAT would cause an issue.  But that doesn't happen often. Hasn't happened since the new format started, has it?

And even if it did happen now, with the way it's set up right now, it would also back up when the division leaders play, correct? Cause the 163 game (s) would have to be played, then the W Card games. So same exact issue. If that happened now, the division leaders first series would be backed up, and in my scenario, they would also be backed up.  But by what, one day?  Still not a big deal. Still better to have the wild card series be best of three.

Then you just say, "Neither one of you deserve to be in the playoffs anyway. Good bye."

Which is what should happen anyway.
