2019 40 Man Toolkit - You Be the GM

What else is there to do on a stormy/rainy August day then to attempt to make sense out of the Twins 40-man roster heading into this winter

I combed through the Roster Resource Information and put the info together in a way that everyone can take a stab at setting the 40-man roster

2019 40 man Toolkit

Here's a link to the Google Sheet and some very limited instructions on how you might use it

There are Tabs at the bottom of the sheet for each team in the Twins system and their current roster (25-man,40-man,Roch,Chat,FM,CR,ETwins,GCL,DSL). These pull from the MLB and MiLB websites so should stay current

Roster Resource info is NOT linked and I highly doubt I'll keep it updated...although I'm a little hesitant to believe it is 100% correct so if you have direct knowledge of an error let me know and I'll change it (is Graterol really eligible this winter?)

If you don't mind sharing your choices click the down triangle on the Tab "You Be the GM DUPLICATE THIS TAB NAME IT YOU" and duplicate the Tab
Name it something we can all identify you by and make your adjustments

There is a Sample tab at the bottom for an example of how to make your moves
Enter text in the column directly right of a players last name to Drop/Trade/DL (honestly anything you type in there will remove them from the count)

Copy and paste any players first and last names from the Rule 5 Eligible list on the far right and it will add them to your 40-man count

Feel free to make your own copy of the sheet if you prefer

Any issues or questions let me know in the Thread so I can share the answers with everyone

Just a quick scan. There looks to be about 9-12 names that could go. 2 guys will have to come off the 60 day, and by quick count, perhaps 6 or so that should be added.

Who goes: Belisle, Mauer, Wilson, Santana, Grossman, Field, Forsythe, Morrison, and DeJong. There are a couple more on the bubble that could potentially go (Drake, Duffey, and possibly some other pitchers).

The easy adds:  Wade, Gordon, Weil, Graterol, and Stewart in my opinion. Arraez is on the bubble. I'd probably add him if I thought someone would take him, but he's struggling in AA right now and in an age of short benches, a team would have a tough time stashing him on a roster. I'm guessing they can probably get away with not adding him this year. Weil may fit that mold too, though he's a bit older and having success at AA, so I think for now I keep him.

That would leave me with 2 FAs if I kept everyone on the bubble (though I think I'd ultimately want more than 2). I'd probably look at doing some balancing out and trading a young SP or two for an above average 1B/DH type and/or a good catcher. The all bat 1B seem to be undervalued in today's game, and in our case, we need a couple of them. I'd target Escobar to play 2B/utility. I'd try and get Cruz to DH. I'd consider a solid reliever as well, though I really want to get a good look at some of the guys we already have.

There's also a question as to whether or not Castro will be able to play. Astrudillo could be the 3rd C on the 40 man, but the only way I'm doing that is if I'm confident Castro will be 100% this spring or if they acquire another C via trade. Signing Ramos would be an option as well.

There's 16 guys that could be gone from the current 40-man. About 4-5 can be the bubble guys to get rid of in case you do sign a free agent (Duffey, Grossman, Rogers, Slegers, et al).

There is no one in AA and below that you have to feel threatened to lose in the Rule 5 draft. You might lose a couple of guys in the minor league portion.

You have to make a decision on those that might be minor league free agents: Baxendale is one. Brian Navarretto is another, I believe.

But looking overall, the system is ricj in guys not expected to break camp out of spring training, and only a couple of names that might crack the 40-man come September (Rooker is one).

Again, if the Twins take a hit, it may be in the minor league portion of the draft.

Sheet has been reset

Reminder to duplicate the You be the GM Tab before making any changes to it

I'd rather leave it open for everyone to make their own :)
