Erving Santana has another set back

I'll have to give you credit, Thrylos, you might be right about Santana being irrelevant this year [context from an earlier article]. This is trending in the Santiago 2017 direction - he couldn't regain his velocity during his rehab and now he's a shell of his former self. Here's hoping Ervin can find a way to get his speed back and find a way back on the roster late in the year.

So from the Buxton thread:

He didn't skip rehab.

He only had 2 days remaining on his rehab eligibility (migraines) when he came up.

If a player sustains a new injury (toe) during a rehab stint, they MUST be recalled and be INACTIVE (but on roster) for at least 5 games before they can start a new rehab assignment.

Which explains all the days off since he was recalled.

I looked it up, and it appears to apply to a recurrence of the same injury too:

https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3538

"With approval of the MLB Commissioner, if a player incurs a new (different) injury or illness or suffers a recurrence of the previous injury or illness while on a Minor League Rehab Assignment, the player must be recalled from his Rehab Assignment and remain inactive for at least five days (for position players) or seven days (for pitchers) before starting another Minor League Rehab Assignment."

So are we going to have to activate Ervin for a week on June 22 regardless of his health status? He started his rehab on May 23.

Nope.  He is on the 60-day DL, which will mean taking someone off the 40-man roster.  Santana will not be off the 60-day DL, until he can prove he can pitch in a game.

That rehab assignment rule does not differentiate between DL lengths, though...

But once you start an official rehab assignment, which Santana did, you only have 20 days for position players, 30 for pitchers to be activated.

As far as I know, that rule applies to both 10 and 60 day DL, do you have a link to anything stating otherwise?

The way I am reading that it says recalled from his rehab assignment. That is not the same as being activated from the DL.

It has to be pretty common for a guy to have a setback on a rehab assignment. Activating injured players would be a ridiculous policy. So, I’ m pretty sure that is not what the policy is. I think it means exactly what it says. After one rehab assignment is shut down, the player can’t start a new one for 5 or 7 days. I suppose the point is to discourage an infinite “rehab” assignment of a player that maybe really isn’t hurt.

Now that i read it again, I think you are correct.
