Jose Miranda played shortstop in high school, but does not project there going forward.   After being drafted by the Twins, Twins scouting director Deron Johnson had this to say about Miranda.

"He has a really good swing," Johnson said. "He's aggressive. We're going to send him out as a shortstop, but realistically, he's probably a third baseman. But he's a really good player and really skilled."

"He's not the greatest athlete and not a huge runner, but he can pick it," Johnson said. "We have him compared to a Mike Lowell-type. He's a really good defender with a good swing. He's a good-sized kid. He has a chance to have power for sure."

In his first season with the Twins, he saw 22 games at SS (.938 FPCT) , 23 games at 3B (.982 FPCT) and 2 games at 2B (.913 FPCT) in the GCL League.   He also hit a .227/.308/.292 slash.  He had a .272 BABIP in 2016.  While it was a small sample size, Jose probably would have liked better results for his first season.

 

2017 was a new year for Jose and he turned up his level of play at Elizabethon..  Defensively, he played 37 games at 2B (.957 FPCT) and 1 game at 3B (1.000 FPCT).  

 

Offensively, his numbers improved as well, as he had a .283/.340/.484 slash with, once again, a .272 BABIP.  He started to display the power that Deron Johnson saw when drafting him, by having a league leading 11 home runs.  He also led the team in runs, hits, RBIs, and total basis.  Even more promising was that he struck out just 24 times in 247 plate appearances.   His performance led him to being named to the Appy League postseason All Star Team.

 

Jose should begin 2018 in Cedar Rapids and see plenty of games at 2B.  They may try him more at 3B as well as he may project there more if he keeps filling out.   So far he has been a pull hitter with a pull/center/opposite ratio of .477/.222/.301 in 2016 and .475/.210/.315 in 2017.  Overall, I anticipate his stock to grow as the season progresses.  He has a bat that I think will play as he progresses.

While I have been tracking him closely, I have been bad about posting about his season.

Jose Miranda struggled early.  April was brutal where he slashed .180/.243/.279.  Since then he has been improving each month.

In May his slash was .270/.311/.414.
In June his slash was .281/.340/.458

And in 13 games in July, he has again improved his numbers... He is slashing .308/.339/.538.

In total he is hitting .263/.311/.422 with 19 doubles, 10 homers and 59 RBIs.  He is only striking out 13% of the time.  

Defensively he has played 44 games as 2B and 32 games at 3B fielding .967/.974 respectively.

His July numbers finished .342/.553/.935 in 114 at bats.  He had 6 home runs and 26 RBIs in the month.

His season numbers are now very respectable.  I wonder if he will get a call up to Ft. Myers for the final month?
