Twins, Trades and Cash

I don't know if others saw this but I thought this article over at Twinkie Town was an interesting read. It looks at the Odorizzi deal and the deadline deals of last season and how the Twins used cash to either increase the quality of prospects they received or decerase the quality of prospects they traded away. Probably not enough data points to call this a trend, but an interesting strategy to think about.

The article omits some of the deals the Twins were involved in.

Do any trades go against the premise of the article though?

The only one I can think of is Kintzler. That could be spun as saving money or as getting any level of prospect for a player that wasn't going to be resigned.

Perceptions and realities. What is truth, what is what you want to believe.

It could be argued that Placios is a higher ceiling SS prospect and that was a lot to give up for Odorizzi. Ynoa could also have been considered a high price to pay for a rental player.

that leaves one trade for your theory Claiming a fringe mlb player like Enns as a prize worth paying for is a stretch. . All of the money  must have been for Littell.  One deal does not make for a trend. It could also ne argued the Twins were snokered as the Yankees would have lost maybe both in the rule v draft.

I don't think the Twins of old would have taken on salary like the did with Garcia to get a prospect, so yeah, I think the new FO is approaching money/trades a bit different...

That trade ultimately was Ynoa and a few million for Littell and Enns. I think Enns would have been a casualty next season for sure. I suspect the Yankees would have kept Littell given the breakout season. They may not have had room to do so, but that's why you make that trade. This could be a scenario where everyone won in the end. At this point, it's graded on how Ynoa does in comparison to Littell and Enns. I would bet a fairly sizeable chunk of change that Littell and/or Enns will go on to better MLB careers than Ynoa.
