EddieMatthews Provisional Member Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 I am less concerned about Joe Mauer at first and his back-ups than I am about the pitching. It looks like the brain trust has doubts about the starters going more than 5 innings. They may not want to overwork the bullpen in April. There is a stretch of 16 games in a row coming up. Worst case, Mauer has fresh legs and should hold his own against lefties for a couple of at-bats until the right handed reliever comes in for the opposing team. I hope the starting pitching can perform. Getting 6+ innings on the average will lessen pressure on relief. May has a day off every week. We can expect roster changes by end of May, so let's hope Park is one of the call-ups. Blackjack 1
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 The 25 man roster will change and we'll get Park or Vargas up here to eventually take some at bats away from Mauer but I'm not sure this is something to worry about in April. Mauer isn't what he was but he still gets on base and he has hit lefties before. And if he has Buxton in front of him (hopefully on first base) maybe a few of those ground outs to the second baseman sneak through. markos 1
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 No. At least not the 60-day DL, if that is what you are referring to. A player put on the 60-day DL in spring training can't be activated until day 61 of the regular season. The regular 10 day (formerly 15 day) DL can be retroactive by up to 3 days before opening day.http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3538Thanks!
Homer Hanky Verified Member Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 I believe last week Molitor said the backup is Gimenez with Kepler as the emergency beyond that.Do we know who the emergency catcher is?
Blake Verified Member Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Do we know who the emergency catcher is? I think the Twins may need an emergency pitcher before they need an emergency catcher. Vanimal46 1
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Let's hope the Twins don't see a lot of lefties over the first week or so...Other than Duffy today, the Twins figure to face Jose Quintana a couple times, and probably Kluber during the four game series vs Cleveland in the third week. So, lefties at no more than the typical frequency, but good lefties.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Do we know who the emergency catcher is? Eduardo Escobar has been the emergency catcher in the past, so I assume he still is. Homer Hanky and Mike Sixel 2
gocgo Verified Member Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Robbie Grossman at DH...that's all you need to hear to know that the roster needs to change quickly.
dgwills Provisional Member Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Initially I was against the the decisions made in spring training, but after reading these quotes I can't help but infer that their are some work ethic problems on the team. This would be the time to address that issue. Therefore I now support the moves by the front office. diehardtwinsfan 1
NotTorii Verified Member Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Yeah - so - OK - 2 wins in the young season - Mmmmmm - My problem with the "breaking-camp-opening-day-roster" can be summed up in one question: "What's the plan for . . .?" What's the plan for Danny Santana? He's the utility infielder? - then who is Eduardo Escobar? He's the utility outfielder? - then who is Robbie Grossman? What's the plan for Berrios? He's already proven that he can dominate AAA - isn't time to get him in the major league rotation and let him pitch 6-7-8 games and find his way - or not? What's the plan for the bullpen? Where is the improvement? Oh, right - we're going to hope that 3 or 4 of these mostly retreads have a career year - hoping that again and again and again! What's the plan for spending $$$ on at least league average starters? We currently do not even spend up to the cap - why not? Hector? Oh Geez. Gibby??? Oh Oh. Time for him to fish or cut bait! Where's J T Chargois? Our best starter MIGHT be a #3 on any other team. I get that the new regime needs time to look over the roster and make some decisions after or during the coming year, but this is an all to familiar approach. I was at Wednesday's (4/05) game - couldn't have been 8K on the seats. Pretty sad for a MLB team.
