Harper has one more arbitration year left.  "Harper’s raise shattered the $9.3MM projection of MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz and stands out as the largest raise ever given to a position player that is entering his third year of arbitration eligibility. Harper will be arb-eligible once more next winter and is a free agent following the 2018 season."

The Pohlad's are going to have to clear out some more payroll to sign him.

they only have $25M committed right now for that year. I'd say there's room..

Dude is going to RAKE IT IN when he's a FA, if healthy.

Not sure which of the two you are referring to but I think Machado is the better player.  Harper is more famous so maybe he gets the $$$$.  I mean, both are probably going to get 400m deals so they'll probably be ok.

I think Nolan Arenado did better than either today. He got more money, signed for two years, set the market on that second year, and still has one more year of arbitration after the current deal ends that will be in the $20M range.

Harper's new contract for 2018... $21.625 MM. New record as he breaks David Price's high point of $19+ MM before hitting FA.

This dude is going to break the game with the amount of money he'll get paid.

I would bet NYY (though maybe not with the stupid facial hair thing to keep '60s and 70s hippies from killing us all), Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, Astros, Rangers right now....

It also makes some of the proposals in the "extend Sano" thread look pretty silly.

No kidding... It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility both Harper and Machado making $35+ MM a season when they hit FA. The bidding war between the big players is going to be INTENSE.

Are those just your guesses for teams besides Washington? I would look at them as the favorites to sign him, as they have been spending a ton of money in recent years so why stop now.

The problem with Washington is they back-loaded a lot of their contracts.... So they have to pay YUGE money to Scherzer, Strasburg, Zimmerman, and others after 2018. It's almost like they planned on not being able to re-sign Harper, and structured those contracts in a way where they could handle him on payroll until the end of 2018.

yep, just guesses, and no, I don't think he stays in Washington. See the reply below your's and above mine, for one reason why.

I guess that's one way to go about it- spend a ton of money on free agents to surround Harper while he's still under team control, hope for great success in that window, and then be left with a bit of a mess after he leaves.

I'm just hoping he stays in the NL, and either way, that offseason is going to be fun to follow.

There is no way he's not a Yankee. Absolutely no way.  They have the biggest market, the biggest budget, he's dreamed of being a Yankee his whole life and his LH swing will destroy that park.  The Yankees will give him a 10 year deal worth 400m or more.  And they'll also sign Machado to piss everyone off.

And he'll cut off his beard and hair? Maybe.

Yankees are pretty set at OF for the near future, so not sure they NEED to get Harper. But still could see them doing that.

Harper/judge/hicks OF with a couple more top prospects in the wings of Hicks fails? Yowzers

If I'm the Yankees, I want Machado more, I think.

But, if I had the money, I'd try for both. And Darvish. and Otani.

I think Darvish is a foregone conclusion.

Good point re: Machado

Good lord. The Yankees are going to win at least 3 titles in the next 8-10 seasons.

add the "best" 3B or SS to the Yankees, and also Darvish? Yikes.
