Innings increase for Gonsalves and Stewart?

So here it is near the end of the season and both Stephen Gonsalves and Kohl Stewart are primed to see a considerable increase in innings from last year (Gonsalves had 134 IP last year and Stewart had 128 IP). This year Gonsalves has 137 IP and Stewert has 138 IP with each likely to make one more start in Chattanooga a piece this season. That leads to a very small increase in innings when both should have their innings up to 160-170 this year. My question is how are they going to get the desired innings increase when neither pitcher will come close to their innings limit in the minors this year. Will both pitchers pitch in the Arizona Fall League? I mean to me that stands the only reasonable choice for both pitchers. I mean yes, Gonsalves in general has pitched well enough to be a September call up but the Twins won't do that (although it might be a smart idea see Jose Berrios) and no offense but even with a nice w-l record and good ERA Stewart is less MLB ready now than Gonsalves is. With both pitchers expected to exceed around 200 innings between the minors and majors next year both pitchers need to log more than the 140+ innings they are looking at this year. Now their innings can go up if Chattanooga makes the playoffs but as of now there is no guarantee either Chattanooga or Rochester makes the playoffs. So something has to happen in order to keep the innings increase rate as it should be.

Gonsalves missed a couple of starts in June, Stewart has too many games of not pitching 6 innings to have more innings this year. The  bad management practices can't do much about either situation.

Gonsalves shouldn't be a Sept call up. That would be a bad management practice. He's not 40 man eligible next season, and there's no reason to burn an option for what will almost be a certain demotion to AAA to start the year.

I could be wrong, but I thought that if a player is called up in September then it doesn't count towards an option towards that player.

Correct on September, but given that he's not eligible yet, there will be an option burnt next season if he's called up. There is absolutely no reason to do so unless the plan for next year was to put him in the rotation. Calling him up in September falls under poor management, as he's going to spend at least some of next season in the minors.  No reason to burn that option unnecessarily.

I hope we don't have to worry about having a minor league option for Gonsalves in 2019, but I agree that it probably wouldn't be the best idea to bring him up this September. It sure would be fun to watch though!

It doesn't count as an option because he wouldn't be optioned. What is does is takes up a spot on the 40 man roster that someone else can't get in the offseason. Since Gonsalves doesn't need to be added this winter, and others do, and there isn't any upside of pushing Gonsalves to MLB, it doesn't make sense to do.

There are not 40 decent, let alone good, players to worry about. Not close.

But the hope is that the new Twins' management will trade some veterans for at least a few this off-season...
