And a note to the mods, or those of you that were critical of me in this thread and had their comments hidden by the mods: I've unhidden them. I didn't think any were over-the-top uncivil. I don't mean to reject the decision-making of the mods, who do outstanding work, but in this thread I don't want people to be afraid to be critical of my position (or me, for that matter).

I really wish you'd post here more, John. Seriously.

I would grade his second stint with the Twins as a D through June. HOWEVER, at the end of March I would've graded it as a B-; they had a winning season and looked strong for the future after an extensive 3-year rebuild process under Ryan.

The overall grade for a GM can't change that much over 2-3 months. That discrepancy makes me want to step back and evaluate the team, the organization, etc. That's why I wouldn't have fired Ryan yet. I might have done it in October if things continued to be terrible. But I also might not have and given him one more offseason. I think he's earned that much.

Unfortunately, it seems your opinion of Ryan's work second time around centers around you buying into last season's somewhat success even though there were glaring reasons not to believe that the talent on the team could repeat what was really a flukey (and wonderful) season.  Many fans did. Pohlad said he and Ryan did and Pohlad said he still thinks there was no problem with that line of thinking. For me, the fact that Ryan believed that, with all the signs saying other-wise, was reason enough to fire him (even before taking into account some questionable moves and poor roster construction).

thanks John. Appreciate the transparency.

I kind of agree with the stance you took. I wouldn't have made the move Pohlad did, in that I wouldn't have told Ryan he was fired until the end of the season. I would have waited until the last day of the season to do anything, then I would have given him a chance to retire or be fired on the spot.

Waiting that long might curtail the effectiveness of your search, though.

do you really think starting the search two weeks before the trade deadline helps? If you are serious about interviewing outside the org, how many teams are going to allow AGMs to interview during the season?

It happens more often than ypu think. The Brewers hired their GM away from the Astros during last season, for example. They can probably do interviews now, and by September most candidates would probably be free to leave their former teams.

Waiting until October to even start the process would seriously jeopardize your offseason, I think you would want to avoid that if at all possible. It is a little more important than a managerial hire.

I appreciate that, John. I've followed Gleeman since his early blogging days, not religiously but pretty often. And now I listen to the podcast when I mow, from Aaron's website. I was never moved to comment until now, only to say that John was entitled to his opinion, and that Aaron needed more maturity in the discussion. Well I posted that on his website and he apparently deleted it, but he has kept all the negative comments about John. That's too bad.

I do hope your future podcasts are not so painful, because it makes mowing seem longer not shorter.
