Trade Markets: Catchers

I agree with the first 2, but the worst thing that Ryan can do is to go after Suzuki as a free agent at 33 years old.  In 3 seasons with the Twins he put a .690 OPS, which is right at where his career OPS is, with stretches of brilliance (like right now with the axe handled bat) and with horrible stretches.

He has proven that he is part of the problem.

If the Twins have no catcher for 2017, I'd rather see them either go after Ramos (FA) as a potential longer term solution or even after Chris Herrmann in a trade as a potential stopgap and maybe even more.  These are the only former Twins that it might make sense to bring back as a catcher.

Bringing back Suzuki will be like bringing back Pelfrey

I don't totally disagree, but if the Twins play Murphy and don't think he's the answer in 2017 they will only have two options.

#1-sign Ramos or Weiters to a huge deal

#2-sign a retread like Suzuki, Herrman, or someone else to a 1-2 year deal.

I mean good, as an MLB catcher, right now, enough to dump McCann.  Sanchez has 6 MLB at bats, and while his ranking is solid, his track record isn't overwhelming.  (How's his defense?)

I probably should have just said "not close", I suppose.  I can't see the Yankees clearing the deck for him in the next few weeks, or probably not even this offseason.

I'd say a guy in AAA, with his numbers and "improving" defense is probably on the Yankees' roster next year. I figured that was close. I don't know that means they clear the deck for him, though. It's tough to figure out the Yankees, right now. Had they bought an elite FA or two the last two years, like they used to, they might have won a lot more games, and done damage in the playoffs. But, they've passed on that route, so I literally have no idea what their plan is.

Me? I'd have McCann and Sanchez up in NY, this year, seeing what Sanchez can do. Then, I'd consider trading MCann in the offseason.

That sounds reasonable, but since Sanchez isn't up yet, I don't believe they are in that big of a hurry.  I think they are still trying to win this year, with their current roster, and still have Sanchez play every day.

Teixeira and Beltran are both FAs after this season, which should open up a lot of 1B/DH at bats so Sanchez and McCann can time-share at catcher next season and stay in the lineup most days.  (I'm sure they'd like A-Rod to retire too...)

Right, like I said, I have no idea what the Yankees are trying to do right now.....I have major doubts they can beat Balt (lead), TOR (more talent), or BOS (more talent) in the standings. I think they'll sell, but probably only Chapman. It will be hard to re-load next year, the FA class is awful.

But #2 is basically the same thing as extending him, of course we hopefully get a decent prospect in return to boot. And of course we get to give Murphy reps for a few months.

Supposedly, the Mets are in the market for Lucroy. If the Mets are successful, package some combination of Santana and/or Nunez and/or prospect(s) for D'Arnaud. The Mets have lost Harvey, and Syndergaard and Matz have bone spurs. They need SP depth. The Mets aren't hitting a lick either. Nunez could help them.

What would be a fair price for McCann?

Guessing it would depend on how badly the Yanks want to call up Sanchez  and how interested another team would be in a 32 years old catcher and is owed $17MM in both 2017 and 2018 (plus a $15MM vesting option for the 2019 season).

He has put up 2.9, 2.4, 3.6 WAR the last three seasons and is on a 3.2 pace this year. We don't have to look very far to find guys paid about the same or more without the 2.5 to 3.5 WAR per year.

And this is a world where a below average vet may cost $5-6m on the FA market and require multiple years.

There should be at least 4 playoff contenders in the market for a catcher.

OPS

.516  Cleveland

.599  NY Mets

.602  Toronto

.662  Boston

Suzuki might be the third best catcher (after Lucroy and Norris).

He's the cheapest of those three in terms of talent to acquire.

The Twins can eat his contract (not saying they will).

I think Lucroy is bound for Boston.

What in the other organizations would make you pull the trigger?

Is the Indians 8th rated prospect C Francisco Mejia enough?

If the Twins ate salary, would they throw in Eric Gonzales (#11) or Yu-Cheng Chan (#12)?

The Mets have D'Arnaud back from injury. The Red Sox have the resources to go after Lucroy or Norris. Toronto has Russell Martin. His defense and framing are far superior. I would think the Blue Jays would project his bat to be at least similar to Suzuki's over the second half.

That leaves Cleveland. Would they see Suzuki as an upgrade over Gomes? Gomes certainly has he better arm. If the Indians are the only reasonable spot for Suzuki, wouldn't the supply far exceed the demand? There would be no reason for them to give up one of their better prospects. If the Twins demand Mejia, the Indians can simply look elsewhere.

Speaking of catchers, there was a lot of regret and finger pointing at the Twins for not signing or trying to sign Russell Martin during the last off-season.  He has seemingly fell off a cliff this year.  That $20M per for the next 3 years is probably not looking overly great to Toronto right now.

Martin had a terrible start this year, but he has an .881 OPS since May 25th. He could easily finish as a league average bat, which wouldn't be bad for an off year from a catcher.
