Badsmerf Verified Member Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Finally got a roku stick, trying the sling trial. Biggest problem is lack of local news. I could get an antenna, but not sure if it could reach far enough. Any tips for content out there? I know we've had a few of these threads, so provide some input for a noob.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 You're off to a good start. If you're looking for local news, I would invest in a quality antenna. The Leaf50 antenna supposedly has a range of 50 miles to get local broadcasts. I would look into it. If it doesn't work, you could always return it.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 Problem is it would need to be about 75 miles. I might try one just to see though.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Not sure if there's an antenna that acquires signals that far but why not give it a shot? As far as other content - Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video. Pick your poison. Netflix and Hulu are close to the same price ~$10/month. I'm not sure what Amazon Video costs separately. It's included if you have an Amazon Prime account.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 I just saw an ad for local news on the web. Search..... Amazon prime and Netflix and HBO go are mine. I only pay for HBO during GOT.

It's worth watching the entire first season just for the Optimal Tip-to-Tip Efficiency episode. It's a classic example of taking a middling joke and beating you over the head with it until you're crying from laughter.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 I have been told by EVERYONE to watch silicon valley, so we'll start soon. I actually get HBO "free" for the first year in my new "home" in OR, so we'll have time.
USMCTwin Verified Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 We use an antenna with a TIVO box, the TiVo was I think about $150 for a lifetime plan. Through the TiVo box we can get access to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and MLB. Of course you have to pay for any of those subscriptions. We subscribe to MLB, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. In my mind you just can't beat Amazon Prime unless you are absolutely hooked on a Netflix original. With Prime you get the 2 day shipping, Prime Video (fairly similar offering in comparison to Netflix), and Prime Music. I use the music a ton and there is a bunch of free music content to put in different playlists. We bought the Echo and often stream music from Amazon prime. Best of all we use google fiber and went with the most basic plan $300 for 7 years of service and it's fast enough to stream anything to our tv and use the Echo at the same time. I used to think I would really hate not having cable/directtv, but honestly there are very few times I miss it and I sure don't miss the bill.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 I wish I could get fiber......really wish it.
Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 If it's local news you're looking for, just try punching yourself in the face over and over. That way, you substitute one painful routine with another, and they both make you dumber, so it's a decent stand-in.
