More fun draft stuff

At #15 that's a stretch, he has all the tools that's for sure, kids got forearms like popeye, the rest of him is compact and very muscular and thick lower half.

Great photo! He looks pretty well built. I agree 15 would be a stretch and was responding to gunnarthor's comment about the Twins pick at #56. But he might be gone by then.

Some more interesting draft rumors:
http://m.mlb.com/news/article/182564040/draft-buzz-what-callis-and-mayo-are-hearing?topicid=167757330

1) Jason Groome is no longer going to Vanderbilt but rather a junior college making him eligible for next years draft if he doesn't like how this draft goes.  He wants 4m or more.

2) Atlanta might save money at #3 by picking someone like Ian Anderson

3) Dunn is rising and might be off the board before the Twins pick.

Not sure where else to put this but Callis did a re-draft of the 2011 draft.  This draft was somewhat famous b/c 1) it was supposed to be loaded 2) the Rays had 10 picks in the first round, a draft record.  They kind of screwed it up.  Twins didn't do much better - they picked Michael, Boyd and Harrison.  Boyd's out of baseball and the other two are in AA.

It's interesting to see some of the big busts - Bubba Starling - and a reminder that some pretty good players slip.

This was a good read. It is also a good reminder of how shallow each draft is. Even with perfect hindsight, the best players available around #30 in a seemingly deep draft were relievers, middle-of-the-rotation arms and flawed position players. At lot of people have criticized the Michael, Boyd and Harrison selections, but the odds of them producing any significant value in the majors has always been fairly small. To contrast, the expected value that would be lost if the Twins miss on any one of the 2012-2015 1st-round picks is probably an order of magnitude higher than missing on all three of the 2011 picks.

BA has their latest mock up - http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/mock-draft-5-0/#07JoHtu2CgXq5bds.97

Delvin Perez, a top 10 prospect from Puerto Rico, is not in their first round.  He failed a drug test for using a performance enhancing drug.  No idea how this affects his draft spot.

It has the Twins taking (my personal choice) Dakota Hudson - "Minnesota likely is Dunn’s floor, as they would be in on a fast-moving college starter if there were one. Minnesota here may go with the best player on its board, regardless of genre, and that could still be Hudson, who slid a bit late. PICK: Dakota Hudson, rhp."

So here's a question... if a guy like  Perez is still there come 56, do you take him?

I think I would (but I think some other team nabs him).  He doesn't have a lot of leverage - he's a poor kid from PR, apparently, and has no college commitment so he'll sign.  I'm sure his adviser is working the phones to get something worked out for him with (probably) the Reds, who were linked to him prior to the drug test result.  They could take him at 35 or 43.

Hypothetically, if the Twins drafted an un-signable guy at 15 and got the #1 and #16 picks next year, plus at least one compensation pick, they could really throw their weight around next year. It wouldn't be out of the question that they could draft two of the top ten players.

I don't see the Twins doing it, but would that be better than what they are angling for this year?

I think it would be a bad idea.  You're punting a year of service time away in your system and there is no guarantee that the players you get next year would be better.  That year of development time is big.

Every time KLAW or one of the other guys on line are asked that (the ones that used to work in a FO), they say:

a: if you aren't sure you are going to be employed next year, no way you punt picks this year

b: what if everyone bombs next year, or is hurt, and the draft isn't good

c: that year of development matters, a lot

d: a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush

Not one person, that I've seen, thinks it is a good idea, other than fans like us.

I've heard Buddy Reed's name mentioned the last couple of days with the Twins, still really raw but very athletic.  Can't believe the draft is 24 hrs and nothing has been pegged down, draft is really looking like a crapshoot.

Why not Ben Rortvedt? Too expensive? I've seen accounts saying he has the most upside for any defensive-capable catcher in this draft. I'm tired of catchers that either have defensive upside or offensive upside, but not both. Rortvedt has both, even if the odds of both showing up are probably relatively small.

See here: https://baseballdraftreport.com/tag/ben-rortvedt/

Hate to be the guy, BUT HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?!?  I freaking love this pick.

Bob, you're in on this one too!

I know my thoughts are worth as much as I get paid to write them here, but in my view, the Indians and the Twins won day 1 of the draft, no questions asked.

I kind of feel the cardinals did well....
