Zach Granite
DOB: 9-17-92, in Staten Island, NY
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 175
Position: OF
Bats: Left
Throws: Left
Shane's 2016 Prospect Rank: 46

2016 statistics (Chattanooga):

145 PA, .248/.297/.293 (.590), four doubles, one triple, nine walks, 15 strikeouts, 17 steals, three times caught stealing,

Granite is undoubtedly fast. He started out incredibly well in 2015 at Fort Myers, and then really sunk in Chattanooga. He is doing much the same this year there too.

Granite has come on strong in the last month. That OPS is now at. 711. He is 29 for 33 in stolen base attempts. I am more enthused about his abilities than I ever have been.

Steals don't show up in OPS but if you took away 4 hits and turned 29 singles into doubles, his OPS would be astronomical.... Quick, someone do the math! I'm out of my league on that one.

In any case, he should be shooting up prospect charts with those numbers.

.744 OPS and 30 steals against only seven times caught stealing. Granite is someone to really watch as he should be chilled out in AA for the next full year.

.737 OPS and 38/47 sb/sba. 34 whiffs and 34 walks in AA. Hopefully he starts in AA next year but the Twins ram washed up veteran OFs down AAA next year blocking Granite's way.

2016 Summary

584 plate appearances, .295/.347/.382 (.729), 18 doubles, one triple, four homers, 42 walks, 43 strikeouts, 56 steals, and 14 times caught stealing. The slugging is actually a solid improvement over previous seasons. The BB/K rate is fantastic, and then the stolen bases are an extra element to consider. Granite is an excellent CF.

2017 Outlook

Granite should return and be in the middle of a great OF defense in Chattanooga with Tanner English and Edgar Corcino flanking him. The slight uptick in power this year really adds to the great base stealing ability, the plate disclipine, and the excellent defense. I would want Granite to get another 200 plus plate appearances in AA before promoting him to AAA. He turns 25 next September, and one would think he will be in a Twins uniform at that time.

I expected to see Granite in AAA to start next year until I realized English is there. What are the odds Grossman is gone and English or Granite is the fourth OF option?

I hope that's what they do... Don't know much about English, but from Shane's breakdown of Granite he sounds like a fine 4th OF option. Both options have to be better at fielding the ball than Grossman.

Grossman is a slow-footed LF with a mediocre throwing arm.  Add to that, any ball going into the corner in left, Grossman had to spin around on those slow feet.  Recipe for disaster.

Granite, on the other hand, seems like a perfect 4th OF.

Not that I am any expert but I am a big Granite fan!   Love his skill set (speed, good eye, and defense) and think he would be a good addition for us sometime next year as 4th OF.  He is another Lefthander - so not a platoon option with Rosario unfortunately.

Granite and English will be in CF/LF for Chatty to start the year. Granite, in particular, still has to hit better. They both need time and not to be rushed through AA.

As mentioned in another thread, ZG profiles as a perfect 4th guy(at the least): speed, glove, plate discipline.

He could fill in at all 3 OF positions, provide late inning defense and speed on the basepaths.

How is his arm?

You are exactly right. .700 OPS is workable in that role, given what he can do on the bases.

The only word I think I have seen to describe his arm is "average." The speed is really elite, however.
