gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 So, b/c I'm married with children I never see things while they're current but we just rented Spotlight, the movie about the priest sexual abuse scandal. Anyone see it? It's a really great (but depressing) movie.

Well made, obviously there were bad things going on, but the movie really didn't demonize anyone which always helps me believe in it's authenticity. I hate "Based on a true story" movies where the bad guys are some super evil unstoppable force and the writers have to clearly manufacture conflict to create drama. They didn't seem to do that here.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Haven't seen it, but it's on the list. Having been raised in that culture, but happily spared any of this stuff, it does help affirm my decision to get out.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 I watched it with my wife and in-laws who are Catholic, I am not. It was only a little awkward. But that's only because I jumped on the coffee table and did an "I told you so dance" in front of them.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 It's a good movie but I didn't feel it was great. A bit slow, plodding, and mostly predictable even though I only vaguely remember this happening. The Big Short was a much more entertaining movie, IMO. Creed was also much better, IMO. Creed was soooooo fuggin' good. I have a huge soft spot for the original Rocky and that movie hit all the same notes.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 I haven't seen Creed yet. I also love the original Rocky however I still resent what the character became in the gratuitous sequels. People say Creed is good and I'll give it a shot, but I'm still going to have a hard time getting past the fact that Apollo's death was basically the impetus for defeating Communism in the Rocky universe.

The scene with Carroll in the Vegas sushi bar was both hilarious and made me very angry. We lost a ton in the 08 recession. (We were big holders of Wachovia and Citi stocks). Great film.

Easily Stallone's best performance since the first, I was stunned frankly. And Phylicia Rashad, who knew she was more than Claire Huxtable?
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Phylicia Rashad still acts? Who knew?
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 They recast Apollo's wife? I haven't seen the movie, but I guess I can see how it was a necessary role that would call for a more accomplished actress.
