Dream FA Target Johnny Cueto

Nolasco, Santana, Hughes, all of those guys were 30 or very close to it when signed, obviously the Twins love to have some veterans on the staff, why not actually go out and get a great pitcher instead of a medicorce one for once?

Yes, Cueto will be a risk, but there is a very good chance he still preforms as an ACE the first few years, even if he reverts to a 2/3 in the last 2 years it's still not a bad deal.

Instead we are stuck with mid to back end rotation guys like Nolasco, Hughes and Santana for more money then it would cost to bring in Cueto.

I liked the effort Ryan made in signing fairly big deals for those guys, as I didn't think he had it in him.  However aside from Hughes, I didn't actually like the players signed, and they appear to be albatross contracts now; I don't want more.  It seems an awful lot like betting and losing $25 every hand at black jack and then thinking if you bet $100 just this one time you can get all your money back.

It's a house game and it's rigged to fail in the players favor as they got screwed out of their big earnings when they were young and in their primes. Let the Twins be one of the teams that pay minimally for young effective pitchers and let other teams pay for their twilight retirement plans.

Came up big in a big moment.

Indeed. That performance alone might give him a 6 year deal instead of a 5 year deal.

Dude has filthy stuff and is a great pitcher, was just a matter of time for him to shine.

What's the going rate on contract for Cueto?  Something around the Lester contract?

Good question.

The tricky thing for Cueto is I see four clear "aces" (assuming Greinke opts out).  While they will all certainly get paid, I am not sure the market can support four Scherzer-type contracts in one offseason.

I could see one or two of these guys getting 7-year Scherzer type money, and the others having to field 5-6 year Lee/Lester type offers.

Yes, TR would have to deal some pitching to make room for Cueto.  When you get to the playoffs, you need the ace.  I think, given the Pohlad intervew, that he could spend more money to make this a great team, You might also have to move Plouffe to make this possible, but all is doable.  Would rather have one of the two Cleveland starters for Plouffe if possible, not as good, but leaves money for other areas. This is a good plan 1B.

I am not a huge fan or Cueto but that was impressive last night.  What was really impressive was the 7th or 8th inning where he got 3 routine ground balls and only threw a dozen pitches or so.

I don't know if Cueto always does this, but it was impressive to see him alter his windup throughout the game. One pitch would be a slow leg kick holding in place, the next pitch no leg kick at all and a quick delivery. Really seemed to throw off the Astros hitters.

On Sportscenter they put it best "he didn't try to get overly cute" and just relied more heavily on his fastball. Dude is elite, there is no doubt about it. You don't get the 2nd lowest ERA over 5 years without being elite.

He would be a perfect fit for this rotation.
