Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 Tomorrow is cherry pie day, then the next day is sticky bun day, then Monday is YUGE........sweet potato day, and margarita day. Plan ahead people....
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Oooou ... I might have to bake a cherry pie! Will definitely have to partake of the margarita day ... which is nice that it coincides with Margarita Mondays at the local eatery down the street.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 What qualifies as a sticky bun? That sounds rather open ended. If a glazed cinnamon bun qualifies then it's off to Tall Grass bakery before hockey tomorrow morning. I love cherry pie Sweet potato fries are good, if made correctly. Other than that I can't think of much use for a sweet potato. Seems like it wouldn't partner all that well with a margarita though, c'est la vie.

Other than that I can't think of much use for a sweet potato. Seems like it wouldn't partner all that well with a margarita though, c'est la vie. That's an insult to sweet potatoes in general. Since there are nine people in my family (not counting the four dogs and two dozen centipedes, all of which definitely qualify as people - and don't tell me what's said in game threads stays in game threads ), so we buy everything by the case*. That means a lot of sweet potatoes, and we don't stop at fries! For instance, SP's are a great substitute for pumpkin when it comes to pies, only better. They're creamier, sweeter, and even easier to make. Or you can bake them for an hour and serve cut in half with a generous pat of butter on top (or several, if you're me; when's National Butter Day?). Sweet potato apple dishes are also hugely popular in my family. And a week or two ago I made sweet potato pone with raisins just to make Hrb mad - his history with raisins runs long and deep as he ate one at the tender age of four, didn't like it, and has waged a war on all raisins since, assuming his taste buds haven't changed since the original offence. Personally, I thought the pone was delicious. Hrb did not - though he refused to offer any input, so maybe I'm mistaken. Comments, Hrb? I bet you're lurking around somewhere. And sweet potato scones! I don't know ... the list goes on (as the length of this paragraph clearly indicates). I've even been serving them mashed lately when the spare room on the stove top exceeds the spare room in the oven (which frequently amounts to nothing at all). But the moral of the story is this: don't diss sweet potatoes. There's more to them than meets the eye. By the way, I'm speaking of the red-skinned, yam variety. And don't tell me yams aren't sweet potatoes, because that's just not true. *Think Cheaper by the Dozen - except we have a baker's dozen, disregarding our beloved centipedes.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 We've got a couple of goodies today.....Today is National Buttercrunch Day! Toffee covered in chocolate or topped with almonds sounds like a great treat to me. Today is also National Cheese Lover's Day! Maybe Always will come out of the woodwork to celebrate with us today. There's way more cheeses that I like than cheeses I don't like. However, I will say one that I do not care for is Blue Cheese...It's also National DJ Day... And really, who cares.... Cheese Lover's Day? How fitting! I see we celebrated Always rather than cheese that day.

twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Well I'll be trying that for sure, completely by coincidence and not at all planned we're having enchiladas tonight. Clearly the universe is speaking to me.......in my language.

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 It's a strong start to the week! Margaritas yesterday, now....National banana bread day! I love banana bread.... Quick, sweet, and delicious. It's also National Dog Biscuit Day! Not really a holiday we humans can celebrate, but if you have dogs, give them a special treat for this occasion.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 I love banana bread.....with extra bananas and chocolate chips.....no nuts.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Mmmm, 'naner bread. Second only to zucchini bread for goodness. My dogs get special treat day nearly every day. And they act like Snuffles (warning: age litmus test).
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I love banana bread.....with extra bananas and chocolate chips.....no nuts. That's what I'm talking about! Adding nuts to banana bread is criminal.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I love banana bread.....with extra bananas and chocolate chips.....no nuts.I usually make it with extra bananas and forgo any oil the recipe says to add. And I'll put in choc. chips if I have them on hand. But yes ... no nuts, usually. Unless I have pecans. It's the only nut I'll put in anything if at all.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 One of my old time relatives "invented" dilly bread and won a betty crocker contest with it, or something like that.....
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Start planning ahead for the weekend folks...Today is National Pistachio Day! Do yourself a favor and get the salt and pepper pistachios from Costco. You can thank me later, or get mad at me because you ate the 3 lb. bag in one sitting. The choice is yours....Tomorrow is National Kahlua Day. I will celebrate early by enjoying a White Russian tonight at the bar....Tomorrow is also National Strawberry Day! Why have national strawberry day when strawberries aren't in season? I was extremely disappointed in the quality of them the last time I bought a pack at the grocery store. And Sunday is National Chocolate Souffle Day!

And Sunday is National Chocolate Souffle Day! Strawberries are in season in Florida, I believe. A lot of pistachio lovers here, so I expect much giddiness over that one. It's been a long time since I've had a White Russion ... how different is that from a Black Russian? Ooooou ... chocolate souffle ... nothing wrong with that one, not at all.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 Almost done with my bag of pistachios at my desk. Need more. chocolate souffle....hmmm.....love it, may need to eat some. Strawberries, it does seem odd that isn't more in the spring, frankly.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 A Bulldog is my favorite mixed drink. Vodka, Kahlua, Coke, and cream - and if you have a very kind barkeep, the cream isn't half and half, it's of the Bailey's variety.

Pistachios, love 'em. Nobody answered my red pistachio trivia question a while back. No worries, it wasn't all that interesting.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Damn, I'm an extra day older
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Damn, I'm an extra day older And deeper in debt.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Damn, I'm an extra day older Nah, your b-day's not until June, so you're an extra day younger. That means you've got that much more time to dope delusional Americans into thinking you're under 21. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 And deeper in debt. This extra day is great! It's giving me another day to search for pocket change in my couch to pay off my rent!

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 A lot of choices today for National Holidays....Today is National "DADGUM That's Good!" Day! Not only is it a southern phrase, it's the name of a cookbook sold by John McLemore. I think to celebrate, just cook something for dinner tonight and yell out that phrase.... Today is also National Peanut Butter Lover's Day! I've been on a peanut butter toast craze for breakfast the last couple of weeks. Crunchy, creamy, it's all good to me. Today is also National Pig Day! I will celebrate my including bacon in one of my meals for the day... I find it funny how much of a fraud teacup piglets are. One of the last Miss Vanimal's was obsessed to get a teacup piglet. I said it may look cute now, but it's not going to be so cute when it's 350 lbs. in 5 years. Today is also National Horse Protection Day! Would you like to adopt a horse? Today may be the best day to do so... A horse wouldn't quite fit in my apartment today.
