I think the odds of catching the royals are slim to say the least, however the twins are currently in prime position for the wildcard.

 

Here are some games to watch:

 

Detroit and Balt both lost earlier which is big.

 

Red Sox at Houston: Houston is up 1.5 games for the #1 WC position.

 

White sox at Clev: Cleveland currently sits 5 back of the twins for the wild card.

The Tigers are going to do what the 2010 Twins should have done.. Realize it's over, cut bait on the vets and start fresh in 2016.

The Tigers are going to do what the 2010 Twins should have done..

Should they have done this before or after they won 94 games and took the division with ease?

 

People act like 2011 was so easy to see coming but it required utter disaster at every level.

 

In 2010, Young and Liriano broke out and became the players we thought they'd be. Scott Baker looked like a pretty nice pitcher. Mauer was in his prime. Morneau was on his way to a 10 WAR (!) season before the injury and we all thought he'd be back strong in 2011. That's a rock-solid core of young players.

 

To go along with that core, the Twins had "good enough" complementary players in Cuddyer and Kubel. Cuddyer wasn't too old and Kubel was still in his prime.

 

And every single piece of that core went down with injuries in 2011, excepting Delmon, who imploded spectacularly for no apparent reason. Justin Morneau was the oldest player in that core, clocking in at a near-geriatric 29 years of age.

 

By the time the 2011 Twins knew what hit them, every player in that core was massively devalued. They couldn't trade away pieces because they had no valuable pieces to trade except Mauer.

To be fair the twins didn't have guys like David price and Cespedes as trade chips, I don't think the Twins would have got much in return any of the past several years.

 

Also the twins made the playoffs in 2010, how on earth can you second guess that in the first place?

 

I think it would be dumb for the Tigers to sell now too, they are only 4 back.

My bad. 2011 Twins. And that's true they have significant trade chips compared to what we had at the time.

 

Basically my feeling is the Twins won't be worrying about Detroit being playoff contenders

Yep, realized I put the wrong year - strike 1

We didn't have great trade pieces like Price and Cespedes - strike 2

And we couldn't trade injured players - strike 3 looking

 

Really I was thinking that the Tigers are in a somewhat similar spot. Dominated the division for the last 4 years, probably could squeeze another run out of it and make it to the playoffs... But instead realizing it could be better LT to be sellers now and start fresh in 2016.

 

EDIT: As Ron Gardenhire said more than a couple of times, "All we can do is come back tomorrow." I battled my tail off out there, but there were better posters today.

I agree the Tigers should consider selling. I thought the Tigers had a good chance of scuffling before the season began. They're technically in it but for the long term benefit of the franchise, a reboot is probably in order. They have a lot of valuable pieces, which would greatly speed up a rebuild.
