Miller: Twins Pitchers/Catchers "Speed Dating"

Phil Miller of the Star-Tribune wrote a blog about the Twins pitchers and catchers work this morning. Each pitcher shook hands with each catcher and spent some time just getting to know each other. Molitor said it was like "Speed Dating." The players get to know the other guy, what they like to throw, when, personal stuff.

I like it. It's different. I wonder if it is a Molitor idea, or if it was a Neil Allen idea?

I like the idea as well.  Reading the blog, it kind of sounds like this was Neil Allen's idea.

The more you know, the more comfortable you will be, Allen explained in proposing the exercise to Molitor.

I think it makes a lot of sense.  From other interviews I've heard from Allen, it sounds like he's really into knowing a lot about the pitchers he's working with.

So that's what they were doing!  I mentioned to a friend it looked like they were just wasting time, talking about golf yesterday or something.

I find it so sad that this is worth reporting in a newspaper.

Oh, I don't know.  For some of us, me included, I just want to know every nugget of what's happening down in Ft. Myers right now ... what's new, what's the same, what are the 'new' people bringing in, the new ideas, new practices ... it just feels like a new era, sort of, and I want to know these little things, even if they seem kind of 'sad to be worth reporting.'

Before spring training games start, everything is news. And this definitely qualifies.

It's better than "so and so in the best shape of his life" articles that are EVERYWHERE.

It qualifies because it appears to be something different. One of the big questions heading into spring training has been How is Paul Molitor different from Ron Gardenhire? Obviously that will play out over the course of the next year or two (And some of it we won't be privy to), but specifically, what is different about how he is choosing to run spring training? And also, what new ideas is Neil Allen going to bring in?
