One thing I have noticed so far is that the Twins have yet to draft a catcher. Normally that position is a priority with the Twins on draft day, but they have a backlog at the position. Have they still only drafted one lefty pitcher? I like the pitcher-heavy strategy in that the team is much closer to competing above the .500 level, and you can trade pitching to get players, and any players they shed later this season (Willingham, Duensing, Suzuki, all possibilities) can be dealt for position players in the minors (the low minors, most likely).

You're right. They do like to accumulate catchers because it is a natural position of attrition. Guys get hurt. Guys that hit, get so tired and stop hitting. Etc. I'd think they'll still get one, maybe two... but they've got Swim (in FM now again) and three guys in EST.

It is insane that they draft over 1000 players.

With the MLB Draft going on I put together a database of the Twins minor league system and wanted to see the impact the draft has had on the Twins organization. Some interesting (at least to me) notes.

 

1. The oldest draft year still represented in the Twins organization is 2007, with Dan Rohfling a light hitting catcher drafted out of Missouri high school and playing in Rochester (AAA). The Twins top draft pick that year was Ben Revere.

 

2. The oldest college players drafted that are still in the organization are from the 2008 draft. Mike Gonzales (9) and Nate Hanson (28) are still in the organization from the draft that yielded Aaron Hicks as a first round pick. Three HS players from that draft are still in the organization, Daniel Ortiz, BJ Hermsen, and Michael Tonkin (would be nice to see Ortiz get a shot in September call ups).

 

3. Only one player from the 2009 draft is still in the organization, 6th round pick Chris Hermann. Kyle Gibson(1) and Brian Dozier(8) are two players on the major league team from that draft.

 

4. The big cut for draft years is between the 2009 and 2010. While only 1 player from the 2009 draft still remains in the minor league system, 13 from the 2010 draft are still playing minor league ball. Only one has had a taste of the big leagues, 6th round pick Logan Darnell and only 46th round pick AJ Achter has joined Darnell at the AAA level. Most likely, only a couple of these guys will still be in the organization next year.

Freaking love this pick. Hope they can sign him. Pat is from my hometown and was a water boy for the Varsity football team when I played as a senior. Dude was just a little guy. Now that Twins drafted him! And he's a heck of a player! Teammate of OF Ryan Boldt who almost went first round last year if not for injury. Both from Red Wing.
