Twins Amateur Drafts 1975-1984 The Griffith Years - Part II

Twins Amateur Draft Choices – The Griffith Years – Part II (1975 to 1984)   A month ago I posted an article on the results of the first 10 years of the amateur draft which would have been lead by team owner Clark Griffith.   I did an analysis of the first 5 rounds from 1965 to 1974 and found that: 11 of the 51 total picks played at least one game for the Twins 6 of the 51 picks never signed a contract with the Twins and were available in later draft

And so concludes my Golden Anniversary Year

And so concludes my Golden Anniversary year. Not the Golden Anniversary of my birth. I’m a little way past that. And not the Golden Anniversary of my wedding. We’re a little way short of that. Rather, this past July 13 marked the Golden Anniversary of the Detroit Tigers beating the homestanding Kansas City Royals 8-3, in front of 25,834 fans. Woody Fryman was the winning pitcher, scattering 12 hits over nine innings. Future Hall of Famer and 3,000 Hit Club member Al Kaline was the only

Who Says No? Twins Edition

Who says no to some of the following trade options? #1  Pablo Lopez and Christian vazquez to Red Sox for Tristan Casas and Miguel Blies: Why it works for Twins: They are able ot clear $32M from the books while at the same time solving their 1B issue.  they get a prospect with MASSIVE upside who was showing big potential before injuries in 2024. This also allows for further moves with our infield depth.  BU ta clear 1B upgrade and clearing $32M is that too much to pass up? Why

What’s Under the Twins’ Tree? A Look at the Possibilities with New Ownership

For years, Twins fans have unwrapped the same dull gifts: a tight payroll, bargain-bin free agents, and a roster that never quite felt ready to win it all. But this year? There’s a buzz in the air. What’s that under the Twins’ Christmas tree this year? Could it be new ownership, a higher payroll, and maybe even a shiny new ace pitcher? Let’s unwrap the possibilities. With news of Justin Ishbia’s interest in buying the Twins, it’s hard not to get excited. For lifelong fans, this feels like m

Will Clark Rant

I'm a big fan of analytics, analytics has revolutionized MLB. Analytics is here to stay. Here is a rant by Will Clark. I especially don't like his language but he has something very important to say. & I hope the new owners will take note. https://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/will-clark-sf-giants-analysts-message-19822038.php As I said, Analytics has revolutionized MLB. But many have gone crazy with it, taking the heart and soul out of the game of Baseball and morphing it into a c

Roki Sasaki

https://www.msn.com/en-in/sports/mlb/latest-news-on-japanese-sensation-roki-sasaki-brings-hope-for-minnesota-twins/ar-AA1vCsCx  Everybody have said "Sasaki will want to be on the West Coast, be near fellow Japanese, be part of a big market, forget about him". I've been saying all along, "Don't trade away our International bonus money, don't give up on Roki Sasaki!" Seems like he's more drawn to mid-market. MN has a lot going for it, laid back atmosphere, very good pitching development, we c

Twins Amateur Drafts 1965-1974 - The Griffith Years Part I

With the implementation of the MLB Amateur Draft in 1965, a team's ability to build a farm system and stock a major league team is largely affected by it success in drafting future talent. In analyzing the results of the Calvin Griffith years of the draft (1965 - 1984), I looked at players drafted in rounds 1-5. For the first 10 years, 51 players were drafted 1 through 5. Of those 51 players 6 did not sign with the Twins. This group included Eddie Leon (Round 1, 1965 draft), Del Unser

Frankie Montas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ijr9gTviMl0 Finally, someone who shares the same opinion as me. Last deadline I suggested Frankie Montas as a SP option. I stated that Montas was the same formula as Sonny Gray. Good years with OAK, bad years with NYY, rebound with CIN & like Gray surge with MN. Montas was traded to MIL, his ERA was up & down but his K/9 was very interesting.  I was blasted for suggesting Montas much like NYM was for signing Montas now. NYM was able to take another fo

How Important is Roki Sasaki to the Twins?

The Twins (as with any team) would be crazy excited to land Roki Sasaki. Would he choose to sign here? Maybe, maybe not. The Twins do have one thing in their favor which is the fact that they are in the small group of teams who can offer him the most money. How huge would a Sasaki signing be? It would be literally franchise altering!! Having a talent like Sasaki with international appeal on essentially a bargain contract would instantly increase the value of a franchise that is looking

A Fresh Look at Baseball: Vision for a Revamped MLB Schedule

Revolutionizing Baseball: A Schedule and Playoff Format for Maximum Excitement Baseball has always been a game of strategy, endurance, and tradition, but with evolving fan expectations, it’s time to rethink how the sport is structured. What if every game and every series carried significant weight? Imagine a league where injuries are minimized, travel is reduced, and engagement soars. With a reimagined schedule and playoff format, MLB can deliver a product that’s better for players, fans, a

Bonus Babies Out, Amateur Draft In

“Bonus Baby” Rule Eliminated, Amateur Draft Implemented in 1965   If you read my recent blog article “Players Who Went Right To The Major Leagues” you will know that from 1947 to 1965 any player who signed with an organization for $4,000 or more was considered a “Bonus Baby” and had to spend their first year of professional baseball on a major league roster. This meant little playing time and very little opportunity to develop into a better player. There were 71 players in this categor

Review: The Ball Park in Blaine

A relatively new institution opened in Blaine called The Ball Park—Twin Cities. For several years, I've seen a similar model on social media from an outfit in Texas named Home Run Dugout. In simplest terms, it's an indoor baseball simulator with food. It's for socializing, not training. Seeing as Blaine is slightly closer than Houston, I figured I would drag my family against their will to The Ball Park to check it out and provide a detailed report to other baseball enthusiasts.  Here's the

Newly available players I’m interested for Twins.

Here are some newly available players who would be low cost and could help the Twins. Recently non-tendered or released players I’d be interested in for the Twins: Austin Hays (previous 22 HR season), Ramon Laureano (hit .296 w > .500 SLG for Braves), Cal Quantrill and Cody Morris, who I saw pitch a dominant gem at Cleveland in person against the Twins and have never forgotten it! That being said, my nice tidy 129.xx million dollar blueprint for the Twins brings in Jurickson P

Who is Michael Helman...

... and why is he on the 40 man roster over Kala'i Rosario? Granted Rosario is by no means a cant miss prospect, and there is a possibility that he will not be claimed in the Rule 5 draft,  Why the heck do you send him to AFL  and then not protect him? With no disrespect to Helman... Helman is 28 tears old,  will not crack opening day roster when we have Buxton, Larnach, Wallner, and even Austin Martin? and if you believe reports of us being linked to Tyler Oniel there is no immed

Players Who Went Right To The Major Leagues

In baseball there is a chance for something special to happen in every game. One of the rarer events is for a player to make his major league debut and never had spent any time in the minors. Since the advent of the American and National League in the early 1900’s, only 102 players can make this claim. There are 4 subsets of players who have achieved this rarity. 1) Prior to World War II – Thirteen players are in this group. Almost half of these players have been inducted into the

It's The Offseason So That Means "You're The Twins GM!"; The 2025 Payroll Blueprint Tool Has Released

Every offseason, we offer our You’re The GM! tool (formerly the Payroll Blueprint) to build your ideal Twins roster. This year, we’ve updated and streamlined the tool a bit to improve the experience. The idea behind this feature is to give fans a chance to play the role of General Manager (or CBO or PoBO… you get the idea) for their favorite team, the Minnesota Twins. It’s meant to give fans the opportunity to discuss (and, let’s be honest, argue) how they would approach the long, dark MLB

bean5302's 2024-2025 Twins Offseason Plan

The first step in any offseason plan is identifying the needs and the wants for the organization. The only real needs are a payroll of $130MM or less, and a full 26 man roster with 13 or more position players to meet MLB rules. While ownership is on record saying they don’t expect to cut payroll further or that they expect payroll to remain similar, Falvey is also on more recent record making it about as clear as he possibly could last year’s $130MM mark the Twins opened with is the ceiling. “Si

Will the Twins sign a Top 50 free agent?

The current iteration of the Twins' Front Office, led by Derek Falvey, has not been a frequent participant in the upper echelons of free agency, usually preferring to add impact players to the Major League roster from the farm system or via trade. They haven't sat out on this market entirely however, as signings such as Nelson Cruz, Josh Donaldson, and especially Carlos Correa show that they are indeed to step in and participate for the right price and player. Despite the continued budget restri

My 2025 Offseason Blueprint

The 2024 World Series just ended last night with the Dodgers beating the Yankees, which means moves and transactions are on the horizon. Being a typical MLB fan, I enjoy playing pretend GM and setting teams rosters for the upcoming season. There are certainly some needs with the Twins current roster, and I am aiming to fix them to improve the team for next season. Twins current ownership has already said payroll will be about the same as in 2024 ($130 million-ish), so I will take that into accou
