Prospects and Projects – Projecting the 2013 Kernels, Part 3

In preparation for the first season of the new affiliation between the Twins and my hometown Cedar Rapids Kernels, I’ve embarked on a series of “get to know them” posts. The intention is to give my fellow Kernels fans a little bit of information about the Twins prospects we may be seeing in Kernels uniforms over the course of the summer, understanding full well that it’s impossible to know exactly who will fill the Kernels’ roster several months before Opening Day.   (This article was originally

How important are 30 or more starts in a season from each starting pitcher?

I originally posted this on www.twinstrivia.com on 1/10/2013   The Twins and Terry Ryan have put in a lot of time this off-season to try to round up some pitchers that they can put in the starting rotation so that manager Gardenhire can hopefully call on each of them to start 30-35 games each. That will be no easy task as last season the team leader in pitching starts was Scott Diamond with 27 and he didn't even join the starting rotation until May 8th.   If you look back through franchise histo

Hall of Fame Flap Brewing?

Almost two weeks ago, I posted my take on this year’s Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. I listed the 10 players I would have voted for and then I predicted that none of the players on this year’s ballot would garner the necessary 75% support to be elected to the Hall by the actual voting members of the BBWAA this year.   Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm CT, we will find out if I was right.   (This article was originally posted at Knuckleballsblog.com.)   http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/upload

Rational Thinking on an Irrational Topic

(Like all my posts, this is also available at my personal blog: http://heavenlypeanuts.blogspot.com--where there's also space to vote on the Peanuts Hall of Fame...like the real one...only intentionally hilarious)   This is one of my favorite times of the baseball year, which is odd because there's no games being played, no highlights to goggle over, no action to analyze. But there is the Hall of Fame, that marvelous institution/debate instigator that symbolizes so much and actually means very

Prospects and Projects – Projecting the 2013 Kernels. Part 1

Since we’ve officially turned the calendar to 2013, it means Spring Training gets underway in just a few weeks and before you know it, we’ll be getting ready for Opening Day!   http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/KernelsTwins-300x168.jpg (Image: Kernels.com)   With this being the first year of the new Class A affiliation between the Twins and my hometown Cedar Rapids Kernels, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to bring more Kernels-centric writing to Knuckleball

For Better Or Worse: Joe Mauer

You only have two choices: will he be better or worse in 2013....   2012 Recap Given the clustermess that was 2011, most Twins fans would have been happy just to see Joe Mauer on the field last year. They did - kinda.   Mauer not only stayed healthy, but set a career high with 647 plate appearances and 147 games played. However, exactly half of his starts were at catcher (72 games), with the rest happening at designated hitter (42 games) and first base (30 games). I'll leave you to debate how t

Prospect list in depth, Part Five: 16-20

The fifth installment is comprised of 5 high upside guys who could all be very good major leaguers. I guarantee that at least one of them will be very good, another will be good, and the other three will all make it to contribute in a real way (or be used in a trade).   20. Matt Hauser (DOB: 3-30-88), RH reliever/starter: Hauser has a mid 90s fastball, a sinker, a slider, and a changeup. He was great at Fort Myers in relief then started some games successfully and moved up to New Britain where h

The life and times of Met Stadium

Originally posted at www.twinstrivia.com .   As I wait for another Minnesota Twins season to to get underway and no new Twins "news" to write about, I find myself continuing to do research and look for more information that I can share with todays Twins fans. I started this site as a Minnesota Twins historical web site to help fans learn more about the wonderful history of the Minnesota Twins and I do write about current Twins events but I don't spend a lot of time pondering "what if" events suc

Talk To Contact, Ep 19: Drew Butera, The Boat Anchor

Episode 19 of the Twins baseball podcast, Talk To Contact (@TalkToContact), is now available for download via iTunes or by clicking here.   Eric and Paul have returned from their winter hiatus to bring you more witty banter about the Minnesota Twins. This week they are joined by listener of the week, Mark Smith, to project opening day lineups and discuss spring training battles that will have to be won. After Mark's departure the twins discuss Kent Hrbek's place in the Twins Hall of Fame, Eddie

Prospect list in depth, Part Four: 21-30

In the fourth installment, things start to get quite interesting with some strong upside talents and some almost tragic time-is-of-the-essence prospects in limbo.   30. Mason Melotakis (DOB: 6-28-91), LH reliever: Melotakis was moved quickly from Elizabethon to Beloit last year and didn’t miss a beat. The hard-throwing lefty (mid 90s fastball) also has a great power slider. In 17+ innings at Beloit last year he gave up only 4 earned runs, struck out 24 and walked 4. He could fly up this list and
