The Red Wings are 7.5 games out of the league's wild card spot and 8.5 games out of first place of their division. Keep winnin guys! Meanwhile, Cedar Rapids fell a game and is now 3 games behind Burlington for the second spot in the first half playoffs. Like Rochester, they have come a long way since their ugly start. Unfortunately, there are just a handful of games left before the first half of their season ends. The Twins are really set lineup wise with three young, experienced, and competent big league players at Rochester...La Tortuga, Arraez and Cave. Expect all three will see more time at Target Field in September and earlier should an injury occur. Now the bullpen is another question. Hopefully, Zach Littel will settle into his new role and run with it...come on Zach!

Speaking of runs for a playoff spot, after a really slow start to their season Cedar Rapids is now 3 games over .500 and only 2.0 games behind Burlington for that second playoff spot in the first half. Time is running out as there aren't a lot of games left, but can they catch and pass Burlington?

Thanks Ashbury, love those first hand reports. Last Sunday the Red Wings were 11 games under .500. After losing Sunday and Monday it grew to 13 games. After winning 6 straight they are now within sight of .500, just 7 games back. Hopefully the pitching will settle down and help this lineup get back to .500 and then into a race for the playoffs. And its not just the four prospects at the top of the order as they have four guys at the bottom who are hitting very well. What I loved about Astudillo's night wasn't the 3 hits, rather, that he was in the lineup less than 24 hours after being sent down from the Twins. So often you hear about players sulking around and taking 3 days or longer to report. Not Willians!!! Totally agree with gunnarthor about the importance of Javier playing nearly every game for the rest of the season. Still believe there is a strong possibility this kid is the Twins shortstop of the future.

I don't have a clue if the pre-game prep had anything to do with Gibson's disappointing start. Yes, I think that is the word I would like to use to describe it...disappointing. Although I didn't know about his pre-game, during the game I was wondering if the extra two days off between starts made a difference. I know they are trying to get their starters extra rest for the long haul...just curious. How many times have we heard Gladden and others talk about how long innings affect the defense. Rather than a crisp quick inning and they are back in the dugout and ready to score some runs, they kind of get worn down in the field. Sure looked like that was part of it today. That and Sano really struggling to make contact with the ball. Does this offense feel different when Rosario and Garver are on the bench? Am I correct that Eades would have found out he was being added to the roster and called up around midnight last night? Correct me if I didn't see clearly, but when the tv went to his family, wife and daughter as he was taking the mound for the first time the wife was crying her eyes out? Couldn't be happier for him and his family. Don't know what he makes at AAA, but assume it is $75k a year or so. Suddenly making over $3k per game sure will help his young family. Don't know what to think about Magill this past week. At least he eventually got out of the inning.

I agree and see him as a perfect lead off hitter for much of the next decade. Will be surprised if he doesn't have many .400 OBP seasons in his future. I had always been led to believe he was slower afoot. After seeing him with the Twins, he doesn't have blazing speed, but is plenty quick to not clog up the bases.

What a beautiful morning in Minnesota. The Twins win and the minor leaguers go 4-1, 4-2 if you count the DSL Twins 4-2 loss. Urbina again led off, going hitless in 3 at bats while scoring one run. A week into the season, the baby Twins are 3-3. The Twins prospects are starting to heat up in Rochester. Since being sent back last week, Arraez has had TWO 3-hit games and is now hitting .419 average....yes, it is a small sample. Speaking of .400, Rooker is hitting over that lofty mark (12-27) since coming off the IL 8 games ago. With Astudillo going down today, there is lots of help waiting in the Wings should the Twins need any position players. And that could improve more when Luke Raley gets back on the field (any word on when he is due back?). Along with the Dozier trade, the one that brought Duran to the organization last July was "sweet." Hopefully, he doesn't blow his arm out which is happening way too often of late. For those of you in the know, would Blankenhorn and/or Diaz have good value as part of a trade for a top reliever?

That got a little scary at the end. But the other relievers all did ok. Is Garver the best hitting catcher in baseball? Or at least second to that guy with the Yankees? He sure completes this lineup.

Article: Craig Kimbrel and Risk Tolerance
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Count me among those who were relieved when the Twins didn't sign Darvish. I was also concerned with their signing Cruz as his performance declined last year, although I wasn't aware of what Cruz brings to the clubhouse. So I was right with half of those. That's kind of the results shown by the relievers in the article blindeke links to. So I understand the FO not wanting to go more than two years out for a reliever that is showing signs of decline. And I commend them for sticking to their guns and not wavering on that decision. As for Kimbrel, he must be very happy there are teams like the Cubs who are desperate enough to provide financial security for the rest of his life. All indications are the FO is aware of the need to improve their bullpen for what could be a championship run. I don't have a clue how they will do that, or even if they will. As Nick points out, they have lots of ammunition to do one trade similar to the Pressley trade last year. They should also be able to do a second trade and pick up an effective left handed specialist (someone better than Zach Duke) as either a rental for the championship run or the long-term. And when doing so, I don't expect they will need to part with any of my Top 10...Kirilloff, Lewis, Javier, Urbina, Graterol, Balazovic, Escobar, Larnach, Arraez or Rortvedt. -
Isn't it a fantastic day when the Twins go 6-0. Does that include the DSL 3-2 win or are you including the Twins, Seth? And thanks for the first hand report on the Miracle and Balazovic from MLHouse. It is great seeing Lewis get three hits, maybe his bat will take off for the rest of the season. As the Twins search for pitching, could Poppen be part of their future?

Article: Across the Meadow: Draft Recaps
rdehring replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks, Jeremy, Enjoyed listening. Personally, I think your less than 1% on signing the two Stillwater kids is low. If they can save $1.0mm+ in the top 10 rounds, they could offer them $625k each. Considering it includes college, you just never know. Agree it is a long shot and wouldn't put a big probability on it, say 3-5%. So maybe we are saying the same thing and just view the percentages a bit different.- 2 replies

The DSL Twins won 9-1, putting the organization at 2-3 for the day. Urbina took the day off after his first 0 fer day on Tuesday. Really like what that trio, Arraez, Cave and Rooker, are doing at Rochester as they edge towards .500 (still 11 games under). Lots of good in Thorpe's start yesterday, like 8 K's and no home runs. Gotta get further into games before he will be ready to join the Twins. Imagine there is an open spot in Pensacola as long as Kirilloff is on the IL. Could Larnach move up soon? And another nice start for the Kernels from the kid who hails from the Stevens Point area.

Article: MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I could see them needing to spend a few extra dollars to sign Holland, and maybe need to go a bit over for the kid from Rice (Canterino). But other than those two, I have to believe as you do Gunnarthor that they will have a significant savings from their total pool amount. Other than the Auburn second baseman, I don't see any of the college players taken after round 10 requiring more than $125k...although I don't have any hard information. So far thru 30 rounds, they have only taken three high school players headed to college...not counting Cavaco. Once their top 10 is signed, there should be a lot of dollars available should the Twins be real high on any of those three. One, or all, could be in for a nice windfall!- 111 replies

rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Of the last 15 picks (round 6-20) all but one have been college players. And all but one of those (13) have been pitchers. Yes, this is the oddest draft I have ever seen. Sure looks like they saved some $$$ in the first 10 rounds. Will they need to spend some of it on any of these college guys? And little to we know that their strategy to pick some hot high school kid(s) got messed up by someone else taking him a few picks before they were on the clock.- 111 replies

Well there goes the idea that they would pick a high school player with a big upside in round 11. Took a big right handed pitcher out of Cal-Irvine, Tanner Brubaker.- 111 replies

Not in my mind, JLease. That's because I have always seen Rortvedt as a future starting catcher for the Twins. Might have to change that a bit as Garver is looking like a lot more than a backup. Now see Garver and Rortvedt sharing the catching duties beginning sometime in late 2020 or more likely in 2021. As Rortvedt's bat improves, expect he will see some DH duties on off days while Garver will also DH or play some first base. Didn't mention it, Steve, but in addition to a 1-2 night with a walk...he got on base a third time when he was plunked with a pitch.

I can't remember, but think it was his first appearance after getting called up. Littell looked good, really good hitting 95 with his fastball and a breaking ball that was right where it was effective. Then he had the clunker last Friday. But he recovered and gave the Twins a lot of innings. I remember thinking back to when Joe Nathan joined the Twins as a former reliever in the Giants organization. Thought I saw some similarities, yet, will admit that was so long ago my memory isn't real clear. We can hope, can't we?

Article: MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Must say I have the least excitement from the first two days of any draft I can remember. Not saying it was a bad draft as I have so little information to base any opinion. Just nothing that jumped off the page and got my blood running. As you commented above, Andrew, the Twins may have lots of dollars in the bank to make a couple splashes in the high school pond when the draft continues. Looking back at the last three years, they took Michael Helman, Bailey Ober and Tyler Benninghoff in the 11th or 12th rounds of each of those drafts. If memory serves, they spent more than $125,000 to sign each, I believe much more for Benninghoff who was headed to TJ surgery.. Let's hope we see something exciting when they go on the clock later this morning.- 111 replies

Will always be happy with a 3-1 record for the day. Well, 3-2 if you count the DSL Twins 2-1 loss in which lead off hitter Misael Urbina had his first 0-3 day while playing center field. With Cave and Wade heating up, Rooker healthy and Arraez back in the lead off spot, maybe the Red Wings can get back to .500 (21-33) by late-July? If they are to do so the pitching will have to cooperate. Littell had his moments during his recent stay with the Twins. Does his relief appearance last night indicate that is where the Twins see him in the future? And isn't it a beautiful day when Blayne Enlow was Pitcher of the Day and Wander Javier Hitter of the Day? In just seven games, Javier has shaken off the rust of not playing for over a year with his average and OPS edging close to .300 and .800, respectively. When everyone was doing their lists of top prospects this past winter/spring, I asked whether Javier should be ranked up with Lewis/Kirilloff. Have a feeling that come next winter we may see Javier in one of the top two spots...but first he needs to show us what he's got and that begins by staying on the field. Yes, all is good in Twins country!

Another college shortstop in the 7th round. I will assume that some of these kids can/will play elsewhere. With all the talk about lack of pitchers being taken, went back and counted how many went in the 6th round. 20 of the 30 picks were pitchers with all but one from college. Yes, this does appear to be a different draft.- 171 replies

rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As much as teams say they don't draft specific positions, rather take BPA, I think you are right that there was a focus on catchers the last several years. It certainly wasn't a secret that the catching depth throughout the organization was shall we say poor. With the three headed catchers on the Twins roster along with Rortvedt and Jeffers in AA and A+, lack of quality catching is no longer a concern. I expect had the catcher from UNLV been available at #1, they may have taken him. He wasn't. Now they may not feel they need to focus on getting catchers in this draft, rather go with the BPA. Yet they will certainly draft and sign a few, but they could come anywhere from here thru #40.- 171 replies
