  1. Two multi hit games to open the season for Arraez, what else is new? That was an exciting lineup of starters. None pitched deep into the game, but that's to be expected early in the season. Will be fun to follow all four of these guys all season long.
  2. Yes, both teams played on the same field in the same weather. But that game should not have been played.
  3. You can make the argument that the bottom 5 of this group all have a real chance of someday playing in the bigs. I don't know if you could have said that a few years ago or at anytime I can recall. Really like the depth that has been added to this system. One name I don't see and wouldn't expect to see is Benninghoff. Did you see anything of him this spring? If so, what does he look like and where is he headed this year? Having Enlow make the start for Cedar Rapids last night is an indication the organization thinks highly of him. The results weren't good. Do you think it was opening night jitters? Or could have been that this his first game ever pitched in a cold climate?
  4. I like Doc's thought process about trading Castro by June. Add a couple of those quality prospects who would be Rule 5 eligible this fall with no room on the 40-man and maybe they can return a nice prospect a bit further down the ladder and/or a good reliever for the stretch run this year.
  5. One day in the books, thanks Seth. And any day is a good one when the organization has a WINNING day! Looked at that picture of Diaz, is he really that skinny? It's only one game, but what a start to the season. Is Ryan Eades ever going to get a shot with the Twins? Was watching gameday for a bit while he was in and getting the 4 K's. Also saw this Phillips kid had 4 K's in a couple innings. See he was signed at the end of last year and got a few innings before the season ended. Nothing else on this kid other than he is from Baylor. If last night is any indication of what he can be, what can you tell us about him, Seth? What has he been doing since college or did he graduate in 2018? Also, do you think Rortvedt read your Top 20 yesterday and has a bit of a chip on his shoulder?
  6. Does L come before K, alphabetically? I wish I knew how to put one of those smiley faces here!!!!
  7. I was thinking this exact thing as I read this earlier today. Gotta believe these young studs in the FO will have a handle on this and will move a few of those who could be at risk this summer. Whether its part of a deal to bring in help for 2019 or a younger prospect further away from that Rule 5 day or reckoning.
  8. Now I am shocked that you didn't include Rortvedt in your Top 20 position players.
  9. Really like what I am seeing from Mejia. Once they are on the regular 5-day rotation, expect we will see Mejia as the 2-3 inning reliever backing up short starts, especially from Pineda who will have his innings limited a bit. Doubt Mejia will be the one to step in as the #5 starter when one of the five goes on the IL. Gonna be fun seeing how Baldelli gets all three catchers reasonable at bats. Expect Gardy would love to come back and manage the Twins with this three headed monster behind the plate.
  10. Trying to understand exactly what you are using as your criteria, Seth. I am assuming this is not position players, but based strictly on hitting? Or is defense included, but discounted? Reason I ask is not seeing Rortvedt in a Top 20 of position players would otherwise be shocking to me. Not quibbling over your ranking, but the player I think will move up this list greatly during the coming season in Raley. Really liked what I saw from him in early ST games.
  11. Is Astudillo working himself into the backup catcher role? Expect to see him playing around the diamond, especially after Gonzalez play last night, but he could be earning more playing time behidn the plate.
  12. When I look at the Rochester lineup, Doc, I look for two different things. I want to see a team with a few of our top prospects. you know, those guys that if needed will be ready to step in and help the Twins. A couple guys like Rooker and Thorpe who if not ready opening day should be by June/July. But I also look for a team with several veteran minor league guys who can help this team compete in the International League. I want the Twins to put a team on the field that the Rochester fans can get excited about because they win and compete. I know it is difficult for a lot of teams in the Northern Division to make the playoffs because of the screwy playoff set-up. But lets hope like heck that the Red Wings are playing ball the week after Labor Day this year. And I think this team can be exciting as in addition to a few minor league vets they also have a few guys like Torreyes who should be very good in the IL while also providing depth should the Twins have an injury in their infield. As for your concerns, I think Navaretto could be added at any time and would provide excellent defense. I also think the bullpen is going to be a strength as Eades, Vasquez and Baxendale all could probably be solid back of the pen relievers for the Twins or several other teams. So when I look at this team I get very excited. I see several pitchers who just may help the Twins this year and really like Rooker, Raley and Wade as outfield depth or players who will push for jobs in 2020.
  13. I think if he gets off to a good start, Seth, he will move up to AA quickly. Wouldn't surprise me to see him there by May 1.
  14. Will be exciting to see if Balazovic and Enlow can dominate this level after getting their feet wet last fall.
  15. This group could certainly repeat as FSL champs. Unfortunately, when the playoffs come around most of the starters will be in northern Florida. Will be interesting to see the split in playing time behind the plate for Ben and Jeffers. Looking for both to have impressive seasons with the bat. And a pleasant surprise to see Helman with this group less than a year after being drafted.
  16. What is ailing Kirilloff and when is he expected to be on the field? Great seeing him, Graterol and Jax all in AA to start the season. A bit surprised of the Jax move, but encouraging.
  17. In Columbus, Ohio babysitting our young granddaughter while our son and his wife are on vacation. So I got to watch the game on the Indians network. Very complementary of Berrios and Rogers. They weren't even homers when Berrios got several borderline pitches called strikes...as did Kluber. Every time Gonzalez came up to bat they dwelled on his .455 average vs. Kluber (don't know if that is lifetime or from the recent playoffs). When he came up with runners on base it seemed they expected him to get a hit. Looking forward to more of their analysis this weekend. Hopefully, they can split and win the opening series. Loved the 4 inning save by Rogers. Expect we will see Perez pitching 3+ innings in relief of Odorizzi. Its gonna be interesting to see how Rocco uses his bullpen.
  18. If we can't be optimistic on opening day, when can we be? Always enjoy reading your posts, Nick, thanks. Unlike many, I am not worried about the starters. If/when help is needed, I have a feeling that one of Stewart/Gonsalves/Mejia will be adequate. Like so many, I believe Thorpe will eventually step up and be the guy to settle in behind Berrios at the front of the rotation. But when will that happen, certainly not before mid-season at the earliest? It seems every year several contending teams are blessed with some young pitcher stepping into a key bullpen role. The Twins need that to happen this year with the most likely candidate being Romero. Lets hope like heck that he settles down real soon and joins the Twins by the time Sano makes his debut.
  19. When you get a little older like some of us, Terry, you will be able to accept it ain't gonna happen! Maybe it will happen for our grandkids, or maybe great grandkids.
  20. Great report, Steve. Interesting reading. Like Doc, really rooting for Thorpe to settle into a spot in the AAA rotation and demand a callup. After seeing Raley play a few times in ST, really like what I see. Don't know where they will find playing time for all these 1B/OF guys, but that is a heck of a lot better than not having players when a need arises.
  21. I know logic tells us that when they need to add a pitcher or when Sano returns Astudillo is sent down because, well, he can be. My prediction is that he will start one of the three games against Cleveland at third base. Beginning with that start, he will be telling management that no, I am not going back to AAA. He will be telling them he belongs in the big leagues and is here to stay. Find some other way to open a spot on the roster for Sano and that pitcher. I also think that the Twins will carry 12 pitchers for much of the season, not 13. And I have a question for Seth. When do we get the important news of this spring, the minor league rosters?
  22. You did hit the key to this story, Seth. Of all the players listed, he is the only true German. By that I mean he is a native German who grew up playing baseball in Germany. The others are all some combination of U.S. Military kids who were born in Germany, but probably grew up playing ball in the U.S. And a few were born there, but moved to the U.S. and played their youth ball here. So Max is really one of a kind. And I believe he is going to have one heck of a year.
  23. Although none of us know what he is working on or his physical condition, Romero is pitching himself onto a flight to Rochester these last couple times out. His results today were ugly.
  24. Excellent comment jkcarew. The 50% increase is probably $500/mo at low-A and less in the rookie leagues and DSL. Hi-A and up may be a thousand a month or more. So the average is probably less than a thousand a month, say $1,000/mo including payroll taxes. With around 200 players on the seven rosters, that would be $200,000 per month or around a million bucks for the entire five month season. The Twins could easily eat that expense, or recover part by shaving a bit off the salaries of the guys making several million a year.
