  1. What an ugly day in the organization, at least as far as the results were concerned. But Smerltzer is making us take notice. A few more games like this and the Twins are gonna have to consider giving him a call next time the need arises. Although he isn't on the 40-man and the whole options thing will come into play. Was looking at Lewis and the fact he only has stolen 6 bases in 11 attempts. Looked at last year and saw he was only successful in 6 of 10 at Fort Myers, or nearly the same results. Stole a ton of bases earlier at Cedar Rapids, 22 of 26. I know the FSL ballparks are bigger than most minor league parks. Is it also farther between bases?
  2. After a shaky first couple innings, Stewart settled in nicely. Certainly reason to believe he can be a serviceable #5 starter should the need arise. Was that the best inning we have seen from Duffey since he was starting that year he was called up? Maybe, just maybe, he can fill one of the needed spots in the pen later this year. And a question for all of you. With one-quarter of the season nearly behind us, is Mitch Garver the best hitting catcher in baseball? The kid is on track for 30 some home runs while playing in just over half the games. With an average well over .300, he sure is answering the question of who should be the Twins starting catcher the next five plus years.
  3. When I was projecting the Twins to hit 225-240 home runs this year, I had Sano at 35-40. He is gonna miss a quarter of the season, so revised numbers should put him at 27-30. In those projections, I had the catchers hitting a total of 15. Got a feeling they will surpass that.
  4. Don't get the concern about Sano coming back. The core of this team is Polanco, Rosario, Buxton, Kepler and Berrios. Sano is part of that group and will be welcomed back like a twin brother returning home from the Army. As for the bullpen. Agree with many above that they need one power arm that will fit into a late inning role and a lefty specialist. Expect they will wait and see if Romero can develop into the power arm and if Mejia, Moya or Vasquez can settle in and become the lefty. If the above doesn't happen, they should go out and get one solid reliever. As long as everyone is throwing names out there, how about talking to Houston about trading for Ryan Pressley? We got some exciting young talent last July, maybe we could get him for a couple of them.
  5. Interesting night down on the farm, Seth. Blankenhorn moves up to AA and doesn't miss a beat. That is supposed to be that big move that ends a lot of careers. Should he make it, which appears more likely every day, what type of major league player do you see him becoming? And if he is now an outfielder, will his road to the big leagues need to go thru some city other than Minneapolis? Dobnak moves from Cedar Rapids to AA with no more than a cup of coffee at Fort Myers. Is he for real, do you see him making it with the Twins? Or will he become more of a AAAA guy? Great seeing Enlow with a great start. Seems a couple clunkers followed by a couple good ones. Speaking of that trend, also describes Tyler Jay this spring. Appearances like last night indicate he may be able to still make it. Does he have the stuff to pitch for the Twins should he eliminate the bad outings?
  6. Thanks Jeremy and Jack. Have a question about a part of this rule that may no longer exist. I recall that in years past teams would place many players on waivers during August, then pull them off if someone puts in a claim. Do they still have the right to pull a player back after waived? Is that something that is/was only used in August?
  7. Getting hits in all five games with multi-hits in four of them is the start Gordon was hoping for while working on his rehab this past month. Will he wear down again? Or will this be the year he turns the corner and becomes the next man up for the Twins. Expect the FO is watching closely. Can they count on him next year and beyond? Or do they extend Schoop? Getting it wrong could have a huge impact on their 2020 season.
  8. Twins fans should be at the height of their 2019 high. Can this team keep it up? Probably not. But every time they have an ugly game, they come back stronger than before. Other than some fine tuning of the bullpen, what isn't there to like about this group. We just could be in for one heck of a summer!!! As eluded to above, I also hope they get a couple extensions done during the season. Definitely Gibson for probably three years. Maybe Odorizzi on a similar deal. Rosario can wait until the off season, but then he and Buxton are must get it dones. As for clearing the bench, count me among those who support the moves. Expect Cave was in because he is likely headed back to Rochester on Friday. Seems the team believes in Astudillo and will get him back on the 25-man now that he is eligible. With Castro banged up, almost guaranteed to happen.
  9. Got a question about that. If tested with a positive result from marijuana, wouldn't a player still be suspended even if it occurred in a state like Colorado, in which it is now legal?
  10. That is fantastic news, Seth. Getting Javier on the field is as big as getting Kirilloff back. Kirilloff is closer to helping the Twins, but Javier could be special, real special. Although I guess we really don't know because he has played so little.
  11. Really concerned about the position players at Cedar Rapids. Six of today's nine starters are hitting under .200 average, with many way under. They are going to need more than Javier for a second half playoff run. Hopefully the Twins get a couple college bats that can play in low-A immediately after the draft. Great seeing Larnach get his first two home runs. Has been swinging the bat real well for awhile now as have several other guys in the Miracle lineup, including Lewis with six multi-hit games in his last ten. Does anyone know why Arraez left the game after two at bats last night? As we all look for the Twins to improve their bullpen, could a healthy Addison Reed be part of the answer? Sure would be nice! How long does Sano stay in Pensacola? Will it be through the weekend, then on to New York?
  12. I hear that C.J. Cron is the emergency catcher should something happen to Garver. Is Castro day-to-day? And if so, when will he be ready to play either in an emergency or as a starter? Astudillo is eligible to come off the IL today? Or is it tomorrow? With an off day tomorrow, doubt we will know what the situation is until Friday when either Castro will be available to play or Astudillo will be back. Now lets sweep Toronto today and win the road trip, eh?
  13. Unfortunately, Mr. Brooks, I fear you are correct. Gotta believe the Twins will add him, no matter what. But we have to get this kid back on the field and playing some baseball.
  14. There isn't a spot for him in this outfield, this year and probably beyond. So his position with the Twins will be first base. As long as Cron is playing as good as he is, he isn't going to be permanently benched. But remember Jason Kubel, who was hitting like this in the minors and the Twins got him up before September so he would be available in the playoffs. See something similar happening with Kirilloff as we get into August. But like most of you, I see a bat the Twins should get into their lineup before the end of August. So unless an injury opens a spot, the only way that is going to happen is something like I described. And yes, I agree he needs to have regular at bats, which this arrangement would get him.
  15. Larnach is actually having a decent first full-year in the organization. Seems to be some hope he will develop into a fine player. Only problem is, there might not be any place to play him. Lewis has been hitting better of late and I suspect by year's end he will have the numbers to support his lofty ranking. Could be an argument that Kirilloff deserves the #1 ranking in the organization, but hopefully he will no longer be a prospect come October. The other player on this list that really concerns me is Javier. They gotta get him on the field because I still believe he can and will be special.
  16. Kirilloff goes 0 for 3 in his first game off the IL, then 7 for 15 in his last four games. One game to shake off the rust and he is back to mid-season form. Is this kid too good to be real? Don't understand all of you calling for him to be at first base for the Twins this summer. Cron has played excellent defense and is on track for another 25-30 home run season. His average isn't all that high, but he has done a good job. The spot I see for Kirilloff, hopefully by late summer, is as a rotational first baseman and fourth outfielder. Giving four players rest should get Kirilloff nearly a full-time job. You missed mentioning Rortvedt in the write-up, Cody. He had another multi-hit night with a double. Also like what I have been seeing from Josh Winder this spring. May be someone to keep an eye on.
  17. Wasn't as down on the Perez signing as many here and elsewhere. But didn't expect this. Should he continue pitching as he has since becomming a starter, the Twins arguably have two ace caliber starters that will match up with other playoff teams best starters. Add Odorizzi and a healthy Gibson and you have four starters that will match those same teams four best. Agree that the Pen needs help, either May and Romero developing into top set-up men or from elsewhere.
  18. Tough watching Pineda on the hill yesterday, almost like going to the dentist to have a tooth pulled. I know he is coming off a long stint of not pitching. But, he is the one spot in the rotation that worries me. Great seeing Lewis have five multi-hit games of his last eight. Hopefully, he keeps it up and begins adding more doubles. Great seeing Kirilloff, back, hitting and playing first base. See him as a rotational piece at first base while also serving as the team's fourth outfielder. He and Astudillo would give the Twins tons of flexibility with their roster.
  19. Gotta believe that Balazovic had a lot of nerves making his first start in the FSL league. Expect once he gets a few games under his belt and settles into a new routine, he can be the pitcher Mr. Law and many of us expect. And isn't it great seeing Kirilloff back in the daily boxscore and hitting much like the player we saw all last year? Now, can we get Mr. Javier back on the field, please? And kudos to Jeffers who had one heck of a game yesterday. Although I am a huge Rortvedt fan, nothing wrong with having two catchers being as good as they can be. As we look for ways of Cedar Rapids getting into the hunt for a second half playoff spot, are there any other guys in EST besides Javier who could be a big help to that effort?
  20. What a nice day for several of our young stars, Lewis, Kirilloff, Larnach, Gordon and Wade. And a big welcome back to Mr. Rooker. But what an ugly start by one of my favorites, Lewis Thorpe. Seems he has a couple real good starts, then a game like last night. Hopefully, he will get that behind him in case the Twins need a starter later this summer. After several years of special teams down in Cedar Rapids, this year's version doesn't have any of our most recognizable prospects and is playing accordingly. Hopefully, Wander Javier will join them soon and they will get several top college players from the 2019 draft. With a little luck and lots of help, maybe they can have an excellent second half and return to the playoffs. Speaking of Javier, is this the year the Twins will have to put him on the 40-man roster (he signed in July, 2015)? Will be a very difficult decision as he has played a total of 50 games over the past four years, most recently at Elizabethton in 2017. They really need to get this kid on the field...and soon. Perhaps some of you with more knowledge of the situation, thinking of you, Seth, know if I am correct about this being the year he needs to be added. Also, you may know much more about how he has looked when playing in EST, fall instructional league, etc. When looking at 40-man adds this fall I have seven that I would consider must adds, Jax, Raley, Alcala, Graterol, Smeltzer, Duran and Javier. Then there are three more that should garner strong consideration, Hackimer, Wiel and Diaz. Expect the Twins are going to have to move at least one of these, perhaps more before December.
  21. Hackimer's 0.68 ERA looks real good, until you see that he was fourth best of this group. Wonder who of the three will go the longest without giving up a run? You said Stashak has increased his velocity. What is it up to? And can we please have one of these guys make it to the Twins in the next year or so and be good, really good?
  22. When looking at the Red Wings box score I always begin by seeing how Wiel and Raley did. They are two prospects that have a real chance of playing for the Twins. And yes, I understand that neither is a top 20 prospect...maybe they should be? With Gordon back on the field, now have three to look at. As for Red Wing pitching, always eager to see how Thorpe does and he will be back in action tonight. Also think Stewart could play a role for the Twins this year. But Mr. Smeltzer sure didn't lose anything moving up to AAA for his first start. Can't wait to see how he does next time out. Could he be the first to join the Twins this summer? Good seeing Graterol have another fine performance. Curious how many times he hit 102? Also always good to see Arraez get 3 hits. But I am concerned when I see that Kirilloff was hit by pitches twice in the same game. To me, that isn't an accident. If he gets hit regularly, eventually one is gonna find his hand/wrist and he will be out for much of the season. Baseball needs to do something about this if/when it becomes more than a pitcher losing one pitch...especially in the minors. Also good hearing that Enlow pitched well which a first glance his line didn't indicate. Thanks MMMordabito. And speaking about Kernels pitchers, how exciting is it that Balazovic is now in Fort Myers?
  23. Don't know if the called strike on Cruz made much difference, but the game was lost when Gardner's line drive was missed by Buxton. Not only did it get the Yankees their first run, the additional pitches that resulted from it put a lot of additional stress on Gibson. But today is another game, looking forward to Odorizzi being at the top of his game and the Twins evening this series at 1-1. Even though they are facing another lefty, hopefully, Rosario is in the game and puts one in that short right field porch.
  24. What a nice start to his season for Nick Gordon. And Kirilloff back in action made May 2 the best day of the year. After a couple clunkers, glad to see Alcala have a very good start for the Blue Wahoos. Also really good to see Lewis having multi-hit games on a regular basis. A bit surprised that Sano is moving up after only two games, but after yesterday sure seems like he is ready. Could he come back hitting the best of his career? The Twins have a decision to make when Astudillo comes off the IL next week. Does Cave go back to AAA? But what will they then do when Sano is ready in ten days to two weeks? Do they cut back to 12 pitchers...unlikely? If not the only moves left will be to either send Astudillo to AAA or move Adrianza. Tough decisions that are good to have. And wouldn't it be great having both Cave and Astudillo down in AAA chomping at the bit to get back up when their is an injury?
