Article: The Rise and Fall of Miguel Sano
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well the above comments will certainly get some attention. And not much that I can disagree with. But fast forward to today and all indications are that Sano is working hard this winter. Expect we will all learn if that is truthful when some of you see him when he reports to Fort Myers in mid-to-late February. Personally, I hope that Nick can rename this article this spring...to something like "the Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Miguel Sano." Come on big guy, put the work in and make us smile! -
It seemed to me that your criteria kept shifting, Nick. For that reason I would love to see you write up the criteria that you used in this exercise. Then set up a graph and fit each player into it with X, Y, Z values based on that criteria. Got a feeling the results would be different than what we have seen.

Article: What You Need To Know About Nelson Cruz
rdehring replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
40-man is already down to only 21 pitchers. With the abundance of outfielders, 7, I will be shocked if the player DFA'd isn't Granite or Reed. Won't DFA/trade any pitchers until they need a spot to add that relief pitcher brought in for the end of the bullpen. -
I really hope you are wrong, Nick, and the Twins do have insight into how Sano's offseason program is progressing. They have to, don't they?

Appreciate someone putting some value on Kepler. Lets remember where he came from and that it was expected he would take more time to develop. He has the ability to be a special player, very special. I trust management knows that and has zero interest in moving him. Everyone points out how Rosario's 2018 was down a bit from 2017. But no one is talking about the reasons. Rosario and Escobar fed off each other's play. When Escobar left, Rosario's production dipped. He was also playing thru some serious injuries the last month or so of the year. Discount those brutal numbers and his results look much different. Like everyone, Nick, I am having a hard time zeroing in on the exact criteria you are using for this exercise. Have a tough time seeing Romero having more value than Polanco or Rosario.

Article: Prospect Spotlight Series: Lewis Thorpe
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have followed this kid since he was lights out in the Australian Winter League back in 2013-2014. He was turning 18 and in a league with a mix of everything from guys with a cup of coffee to a lot of A and Hi-A ballplayers. If memory serves, he had the second best ERA in the league up until one of his last starts. I know most feel that Thorpe doesn't have the stuff to be a front of the rotation starter. After missing two entire years of development, I agree he needs both experience and work on a couple aspects of his game. I see Thorpe as a pitcher who does have what it takes to make the next start every game after Berrios. Is that as an number one, with Berrios as an ACE, or number two? Only time will tell, but I have 100% confidence this kid is going to get there and be part of that young rotation that the Twins will win with as we enter the next decade. -
Very interesting, Nick. But the biggest disagreement I would have of your first 10 is Gonsalves. I don't see him as ever being more than a AAAA pitcher for the Twins. One of those great minor league guys that can't get it done on the big stage. Not only wouldn't I have him in the Top 20 most valuable, I wouldn't have him on the list if you did a Top 30. Hopefully he will prove me wrong, but I expect he will be out of the organization within two years.

Article: What's the Plan with Tyler Austin?
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Smart move would be to hang on to him thru spring training. But that means someone else needs to go today/tommorrow when Cruz is added to the roster. My choice would be Granite or Reed. With that said, wouldn't be surprised to see Austin traded later today to open that spot. -
Article: What You Need To Know About Nelson Cruz
rdehring replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Was busy and wasn't going to read this, Parker, until I saw you wrote it. What a great look at who the Twins are getting. When everyone was calling for the Twins to sign him, I wasn't on board. Saw the drop in his average/OPS last year and thought it may be the first down year of several. But when I saw they got him on a one year contract, with team options, began to like the signing more. After reading this, I am excited. If nothing else, he just may help all those young kids that have so much potential. And if he does, look out AL Central. -
Article: What You Need To Know About Nelson Cruz
rdehring replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What you said is exactly what I have been thinking for awhile. -
I am of the opinion that the fact the Twins got Cron for nothing enhances his value to the team. Thus, I agree that he has a lot of value to the Twins. And lets remember where he came from, Tampa, who has a history of waiving/trading fine players for nothing or nearly nothing (think the Odorizzi trade). Prior to last year, my problem with Mejia was his not being able to finish batters and being unable to get into the fifth inning, much less getting thru it. I also thought his fielding in 2017 left a lot to be desired. Although he missed a lot of last year, I saw improvements in both of my concerns. Personally, am looking forward to his being the fifth starter with Romero coming on at the start, or end, of the fifth inning and closing out the games with four-five innings. I wouldn't have Javier as one of the 20 most valuable Twins. You referred to his playing shortstop in the DSL in 2016. What you didn't mention was that his season lasted 9 games (I thought it was 3, but looked it up and it was 9). So in his three professional seasons he has missed all or almost all of two of them. To me, that cuts into his value greatly. Can he recover by staying on the field in 2019? Certainly, and I hope he does and has a season to remember. But valuing assets needs to be done at the time of the valuation...today. Thus, Javier would not be on my list.

The last two years Gordon has had excellent first halves of the season. Then in the second half he was bad two years ago and worse last year...at least with his bat. Does that mean that scouting reports/pitchers are catching up with him? Or does it mean his body wears down as the season goes on? Or maybe, some combination of the two. One thing he can do to get stronger and more durable is work harder all winter. Maybe he does. But when blogs highlite photos of his rap endeavor, some of us see them and wonder whether he is working as hard as he should on his main profession. As I said, I have no way of knowing if he is, or isn't.

WOW! I have previously stated that I believe the decline we saw last year will continue, thus, we will see less home runs this year and another dip in average and OPS. But the fact it is a one year contract WITH a Twins option alleviates much of my concern. Good short-term risk to help this team in 2019. Also read that he may be a good leader/role model for some of our young Latin players, thinking of you Mr. Sano. Would be fantastic if Cruz did perform at a level close to last year and worked well with Sano, who I understand has been working hard on his conditioning this winter. Big question is who will be gone from th4 40-man and how they will accomplish it. I expect it will be one of the outfielders, Granite or Reed. Expect they won't have room on the 25-man for Cron, Cruiz and Austin, although would like to see Austin stick until spring training. Now forward to the playoffs TWINS!

Article: Buxton’s Best Lined Up for Now?
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Rosario, Buxton and Kepler could be the best outfield in baseball for the next ten years. The Twins coaches need to find a way to get each playing the way they are capable of. Then management needs to get them signed to contracts that will keep them here. As for Rooker, Kirilloff, Larnach and others. The fact remains that none of them are likely to be better than any of this trio if they each reach their personal ceilings They also are all still in the minors and some won't reach the ceilings we are all hoping for. For those that do, there will be ways to get them into the lineup. -
Article: Prospect Spotlight Series: Jhoan Duran
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When a pitcher leaves the Twins and suddenly a light bulb goes off and his performance is better, many here and elsewhere begin stoning the Twins coaching staff. Wouldn't that mean that we should be heaping glory on the pitching coach at Cedar Rapids? Wasn't he the reason that Duran made the adjustments needed to take that huge step forward? -
Article: The Twins Should Extend Odorizzi, Not Gibson
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not a clue. But when looking at what we got for Lynn and others this past July, would have to think it would be a couple lower level prospects. -
Article: The Twins Should Extend Odorizzi, Not Gibson
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting. But I still prefer to sign Gibby to an extension. If it is more expensive, so be it. As many have stated, the Twins have the space to do it. Hadn't thought of extending Odorizzi, and it does make some sense. If several of the young studs perform as hoped for, he could always be a nice trade piece in July of this year or next. -
Article: Reviewing 2018 Breakout Prospects
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"Miranda was a solid pick as he had shown a lot of power and just needed to improve his eye at the plate a bit more. I liked him as a breakout guy as well, He seemed pretty underrated for what he had accomplished the year before. He still has a ways to go with the bat but he looks good for his age right now." I see Miranda as the best option as the next Twins third baseman. Will be surprised and disappointed if we don't see him take another step forward this year at A/AA. Is he on their radar as a 2019 break-out candidate? -
I think we are going to see something with what I would call 'stacked' starters. Mejia's biggest problem two years ago was getting into or out of the 5th inning. Considering they will be building Romero's innings if he is used as a starter, perhaps something where they each pitch about half a game. Mejia starts and goes thru the 4th and into or thru the 5th. Romero comes in and pitches the remaining 4+ innings. Mejia is a lefty who doesn't throw all that hard. Romero follows up as a hard throwing right hander. Would also give a day off to the rest of the bullpen.

Article: Twins Trying to Sustain Excellence
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well that headline sure brought out the whips for a good beat down. But thanks for a good look at three players who have the ability to put the Twins in the playoffs this October. Yes, things need to go better throughout the roster than last year. But 2019 is an odd year and if I recall the last two (2017 and 2015) were both better than those pesky even numbered years. So lets put the whips away guys and get ready for baseball which is only what, 60 days or so away.- 39 replies

Article: Official Rule 5 Draft Day Thread
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You said it much better than I could, Doc, Thanks. We all saw that the strength of the system last year was at Ft. Myers and down. For various reasons, most of those guys aren't at risk in the MiLB portion of the draft. So yes, the system can be strong while losing no one. Next year and the year after may be different.- 58 replies

rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My fear was that someone would take Jay and he would blossom into an excellent rookie reliever for someone else next summer. Now lets hope he proves the Twins and the other 29 teams wrong, and becomes that big surprise for the hometown Twins. We can dream, can't we?- 58 replies

Article: Official Rule 5 Draft Day Thread
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
After everything that went on the last couple years, am glad there isn't room to make a pick this year. Don't know what to think about Jay, other than disappointment. Puzzling is the word that comes to mind when thinking about Reed, both in how the Twins handled him and why he wasn't previously drafted. The other two pitchers you discuss, Seth, aren't on the same page as the first two...at least for me. As for Diaz, will add him to the list of those who have been disappointing. Understand not adding Wiel to the 40-man, but he is someone I am concerned could be lost. I do look for the Twins to add to their minor league talent pool by taking one or two players later this morning. Hopefully, they will find a good one.- 58 replies

Article: What's the Plan with Tyler Austin?
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Another good article, Nick, and great discussion/read. I expect what often happens in 'waiver' situations is that lots of teams put in claims, heck, why not on proven quality players...which Cron is. They were then surprised when they were awarded the player, Cron. Is picking up a player with both a track record and some talent a problem? I think not. They now have the winter and spring to decide how to sort this all out. Heck, Cron has already delivered one benefit, ie, the 40-man roster is full and they won't be doing anything in the Rule 5 on Thursday. That in itself is good news! -
Article: Rundown: Cruz, Cahill, Soria and Ramos
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Cruz' production was down in 2018. I see that as the beginning of his decline and expect it will continue in 2019 and 2020. Expect it is likely that Austin will outperform Cruz in 2020 with 2019 a wash.- 100 replies
