  1. Just came back to the site and looked at tonight's starters for the first time. This could be another day to talk about fantastic pitching with Thorpe-Smerltzer-Duran-Balazovic. Then saw that Rochester's game started late this morning. Just checked GameDay and the Wings are up 4-2 in the 7th. So maybe Thorpe finally had a good one. Saw he threw 94 pitches in 5.2 innings with only 4 hits, 1 walk and 2 runs. OK, he gave up another home run, but 12 of his 17 outs were strikeouts. So it sounds like for one game at least, he is gettin there.
  2. I usually don't second guess the manager, well at least in print. But we all know that Gibby is coming off a brutal winter and hasn't recovered to 100% with all his weight and strength back to what it was. Knowing that, I can see the Manager sending him back for the sixth inning to continue stretching him out. But please, have some one warming up in the pen and get him out after those first two batters reached base. Would the result have been different, who knows, but odds are it may have been.
  3. Absolutely great seeing Romero back with a strong 2.0 inning outing after his last hiccup. Also, good seeing Raley off to a good start to his season at AAA. Is it possible he will develop into a better major leaguer than Rooker? Another typical night for Arraez. The Blue Wahoos get three hits, he had two of 'em. I guess my question to the in club at TD is when do you expect Graterol to join the Twins? I expected him to pitch well at AA to start the season, but didn't expect this dominance. And who is this Sammons character? Is he this year's version of Tyler Wells? With all that said, the highlight for me was Enlow. After that opening day clunker, I have been waiting for him to confirm our belief in him. Sure did that last night. With a 95-96 fastball and what was described as the best curve in the draft class, this kid could be another front of the rotation starter. Yahooooooooo!
  4. Lots of negative from this one. I only have one thing to say, however, Eddie, Eddie, Eddie! Also thought Duff did a good job only hours after getting off a plane. But yes, this bullpen needs help. Maybe McGill can be back in a week or two.
  5. Get his signature on an extension by July. It may be a year less than the two signed during spring training and will certainly be for more dollars, just do it!
  6. Thanks for the first hand report. Good hearing about Arraez. I have a question for everyone hear at TD. Will Arraez hit for a .400 average at AA in 2019? Would like to see TD do a poll to see how many of us think it is possible. Also great seeing Rortvedt hitting for some power. That and pitch framing, which Seth pointed out, appear to be two hurdles he needs to overcome to join Garver behind the plate for the Twins late next year or in 2021.
  7. Correct me if I am wrong, but it wasn't that long ago when hitters dominated our top prospects with few pitchers thought of having a chance to be front half of the rotation starters. But that sure doesn't appear to be the case early this season. The list of starters giving up few, if any, runs is lengthly...Graterol, Alcala, Smeltzer, Jax, Ober, Sammons, Duran, and Balazovic. If my math is correct, that's 8 starters and doesn't include several others who have early ERA's in the vicinity of 3.00. Will any of the above make it to the Twins and become that shut down ACE every team needs? Don't know, but I would much rather have 8 guys pitching like this than one or two as in the past. Because if any of these can keep this up they will have a chance to join Berrios at the front of a future starting rotation.
  8. What a great start to last night's game and the season for Smeltzer. He may be the #4 starter on that team but his results have been nearly perfect early this season. Isn't it fun getting 3 W's out of 4 games? Always good seeing Whitefield's name on the multi-hit list. With his softball background, would be a neat story if he would make it. Also always like good outings by Wisconsin native Schulfer. Recall being impressed by his play in ETon last year. Count me amongst those who were really impressed by Tyler Duffey back in his rookie season. Although most hope is gone, outings like last night give us a sliver of hope that he can find something from that year and make it back to help the Twins later this season. I often wonder if the pitching coaches messed him up when stressing his need for a changeup the next year. I recall his having a decent fastball and two different curves, one at 12-6 and another that looked more like a slider. Maybe they should have left him do what he did awfully well those first couple months.
  9. With the names you mention and I expect many others, gonna be some real teeth grinding coming out of Target Field come November. Expect there is going to be some real talent exposed to the Rule 5. Hopefully, some of it will be dealt this summer so we get something in return.
  10. Thanks for the added comments on the pitchers, Seth. Didn't get that feel from reading the initial report. I know its only two starts, but is Balazovic the biggest surprise early this year.....or at least good surprise.
  11. Did some digging about Thorpe's start last year, Seth. He had a 4.74 ERA the first half (AA) and sub-2.00 ERA the second half (AA only). April's ERA was in the mid-5's with all the other months below 4.00. So yes, he did get off to a slow start, but I don't recall any games like these first two.
  12. As you know, Seth, I am a huge fan of Thorpe. Certainly didn't expect this ugly start to his season after pitching well at AAA late last year. I seem to remember that he got off to a slow start last year also? Checked to see that Arraez is now hitting .357! Do you see him moving up to AAA early this year, Seth? Or is he one that could be called up straight from AA should they have a need this summer? Have to think that he could be a great lead off hitter for the Twins, perhaps as soon as next year. Yet, the Blue Wahoos have him in the #2 slot. Where do you see as his best spot in the lineup? Great seeing Larnach get back to back two hit games. Need a few other top prospects to join in the hit parade. Was so looking forward to this report to see how the big four pitchers did. Gotta say I am disappointed with Graterol putting up the only dominant performance. Although Duran was solid and Balazovic was dominating his game until it sounds like he ran out of gas. Imagine we have to expect that to happen early in the season, eh?
  13. Lots to feel good about last night down on the farm, beginning with FOUR wins! Great seeing Enlow have a very good start after that ugly first game. Lets hope he can back it up next time out. Also great seeing Larnach have two hits after his slow start. What may be most exciting about this report is the list of tonight's starting pitchers. It is not unrealistic to think that all four could be part of a future Twins starting rotation. Really want to see Thorpe have a good start after being moved up for his first start and not doing well. Hopefully, all four will have quality starts, but who will be the best tonight?
  14. Uggh, that was ugly. Sure is interesting how Baldelli is willing to go with the new guy called up that morning in that situation. In the past, Vasquez would have sat in the bullpen for several days before getting used. Unfortunately, he was really bad last night. Don't know what to think about him, or the decision to use him at that point in the game...kind of a head scratcher for me. Morneau mentioned something I had been thinking about. It appeared they were going to pinch hit for Odorizzi in the top of the 5th had he come up to bat. Did that have some mental effect on him when he came back out? Or did they see something in his last inning to question whether or not he was at the end. All in all, puzzling both as to pinch hitting for him and how he went from unhittable to unable to throw a strike. Wasn't all that worried having Moya, Reed and McGill on the IL. Well that has changed. Does anyone know how soon any of these could be back?
  15. The more I think about Romero's outing, I am excited for how he was used. Going 3+ innings tells me they are stretching him out to be used in long relief. Once he has done this for a half dozen games, and assuming he continues to pitch very well, he could be brought up to fill a similar role with the Twins. Already have seen a couple games where he would be invaluable in that role. Further assuming he settles in and does well with the Twins, he could then slide into a starters role later in the year should one of their five starters go on the IL.
  16. Unfortunately, didn't have all that many games televised back then. Was at the end of my college journey and didn't have a lot of time to watch what was on tv. But do recall the hype that surrounded him seemingly every time he went out on the mound. Damn, he was special.
  17. Great to see that very good outing by Romero. After all, he is the one prospect close to joining the Twins who could make a real difference for the big club this year! Great interview and yes, it sounds like he has his dream job. I know I sure as heck would like to spend my winters in Pensacola getting ready for opening day. And after reading that interview I am almost more excited about Kirilloff than I was before reading it. Can this kid really be this good? And if so, when will he be back on the field and when will he arrive in Minny?
  18. What a fantastic game to watch. I have the utmost respect for Bob Gibson, who in my opinion was one of the greatest pitchers ever. Never saw him pitch, but recall how dominant he was at that time. Thank You Twins for keeping his amazing record on the books versus sliding to Number 2. There has been lots of talk about roster revamping. The Twins have what, three potential bullpen guys (McGill, Mayo and Reed) on the IL and will need spots for a couple at some time over the coming weeks. DeJong is one spot, if not gone by Friday, and Harper is probably another. Doesn't solve what to do when Sano is ready. But can you imagine this lineup if Sano finally turns the corner and hits like we know he can?
  19. The most surprising point to me this morning, Seth, was your comment that Arraez turns 22 today. It seems that he has been having multi-hit games forever and even after missing most of two years ago still is that young. May be more of a prospect than we think, and I think he is a future major leaguer. Interesting to see how Mobile kept him from having another multi-hit game...walk him 3 times. But perhaps even more surprising is what the heck is Guerro doing playing A ball? Is it merely a holding period until his 17 games or over? Or is he on some type of rehab from a spring injury? Looking forward to see how Stewart and Rijo throw the ball tonight.
  20. That's 10 starting pitchers with excellent first starts of the year. Is it realistic to HOPE that two or three of them make it to the Twins in the next two to three years and develop into pitchers that can do this on a regular basis?
  21. Great seeing the Twins get something in return for a player who just didn't have a spot on the roster after last winter's moves. That isn't something we would have seen in the past. Not certain whether to be excited about what they got in return. I guess the bad news is he will need to go on the 40-man roster this November or be eligible for the Rule 5 draft...seeing he was 19 years old when drafted/signed in 2016. Not a lot of position players get selected, so that probably isn't going to be a problem.
  22. Will be interesting to see where Moya goes when off the IL. Could Vasquez be surpassing him as the next lefty called up to the big club this year? Great starts by Jax and Ober, really great start by Ober with 11 K's in 6 shutout innings. I see elsewhere that Sano is nearing his rehab assignment. Expect it will start with a couple EST games before sliding over for a few games with the Miracle. I see the Blue Wahoos (gonna have to get used to that name) have a 5 game homestand against Mobile from the 20th (a week from Saturday) thru the 24th. Will be real surprised if he isn't in that series as the weather in upstate New York can still be questionable at that time. Also would be real nice to have a player with Sano's status getting into a couple games for a club new to the organization. Could then either move on to the Twins or to Rochester on the 25th...who will then be at home versus Pawtuckett. Looks like he should be back by May 1. Will be curious what move the Twins make to open a spot for him.
  23. What a great day for two starting pitchers, Sands and Smeltzer. That Dozier trade is starting to look like a steal as Raley also looked good in ST. I may have missed it, but does anyone know why Javier is in EST? I know he got removed from a Twins early ST game with an injury. But I believed he played in a couple of their last games of the spring. Is it a precaution? Or are they letting him miss the cold games in Cedar Rapids?
  24. Now that's the way to play baseball. What a fun game to watch. Expect the FO knew that Austin was the first to go when they needed that next roster spot (12th pitcher after next week or Sano). Just ended up pulling the trigger early. Still have a big decision when Sano is healthy. Will it be Cave or one of the two catchers with options to the minors? Or will they do something with one of their two backup infielders. Has to be one of those 5. Or maybe there will be another injury by then which will delay the inevitable.
  25. That callup logic is sure gonna change, is it this September or next? Only being able to call up two guys is a huge mistake in my opinion. I understand not having all 40-guys on the bench, but there should be more than 28.
