Is there a good chance that Odorizzi starts the year as #5? P&P just might begin ahead of him based on their springs. If that happens, this is a very good rotation. The one risk I see is that Pineda may tire the last month or two since he hasn't pitched much for a couple years. That's where the cream of the crop at Rochester will help. And looking at that depth group, plus Thorpe, Rochester should have one heck of a starting 5 or 6. And let's change next year's prospects this week...extend Gibson!

Wasn't a fan of the Cruz signing at the time everyone was gushing over his possible signing. My fear was that last year's decline in production would continue. If that does occur, his performance is going to be very average. Since the signing, however, I have warmed to it mostly because of what I have learned about what he contributes on the bench and off the field.

Article: Ask Seth (Ft. Myers Edition)
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interested in two minor league guys, Seth. Curious if you have seen Jax pitch? Also, Rortvedt got significant playing time with the big club in spring training games. Was curious how he looks if you have seen him? -
Enjoy spring training, Seth. Its a bear up here with all the snow and probably worse up on the border. With his new contract in hand, I have a feeling that Kepler is going to have a break-out season...at least as far as the average is concerned. Have you seen much of him? Collins has pitched well, have you seen him so you can comment? Can he make this team?

Article: Twins Make First Roster Cuts
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not surprised about Vasquez, or any of the others on the 40-man. Isn't it normal to try to get the guys they know won't be on the opening day roster optioned early in spring training? Isn't one reason that if they were to be injured before being optioned they would make the MLB minimum rather than whatever their minor league salary is while on the DL?- 20 replies

100% in agreement that the Twins should extend Rosario. Because he is closer to free agency, maybe a year shorter than Kepler.- 19 replies

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Left Field
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Has been my favorite Twin since the year he battled Sano for the HR championship in the Appy League. When injured last year he had enough time remaining for one more hot streak which would have made his year ending numbers so much different. Hopefully, 2019 will be the year he is blessed with good health. Assuming good health, and not playing while injured, I see Rosario as ending 2019 with an average around .300, 30+ home runs and at least 100 rbi. Add 15+/- assists and 15-20 stolen bases and you have a very special season. That would mean he would also end 2019 with a new contract. Eddie, Eddie, Eddie!- 19 replies

Article: Still Free: LHP Dallas Keuchel
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wish him well and maybe Boras and his clients need to understand that teams aren't going overboard with expensive long-term contracts to older players. Baseball has changed, for the better in my book. Personally, I am very happy with the starting rotation the Twins have half way thru spring training...Berrios, Gibson, Odorizzi, Pineda and Perez. Add Mejia in the bullpen as an immediate replacement should any of the five get injured or falter. Then there is a flock of young talent at Rochester. Hell, the Red Wings rotation may be better than the Twins rotation was a few years ago. Come to think of it, it very likely is. So there are lots of arms down on the farm waiting for the chance to prove themselves on the big stage. -
Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Shortstop
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I see Polanco in the #2 or #3 spot this year with Kepler in the lead off spot. You know it is possible Lewis is the starting shortstop for just a year. There is a chance that Javier turns out to be as good as Lewis and the better defender. With his speed, Lewis could be moved to another position with Javier/Polanco up the middle. Not predicting this, rather waiting to see what type of year Javier has if he can finally stay healthy for an entire season. Wouldn't it be exciting to have two of the top young players in the league hitting the Twins roster within a half season of each other?- 43 replies

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Third Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article, Nick. All baseball with a realistic look at the situation. Sano-Buxton, Buxton-Sano, Sano-Buxton. The Twins had to count on a recovery from both to propel them to the playoffs this season. Stay tuned to see how it turns out. The really good news, however, is that with many options for a decent 4th outfielder and Gonzalez, they have given themselves solid players to fill in should either or both be injured or fail in 2019. The replacements won't have the ability to lead the drive to the playoffs, but they also won't be anchors. If Sano-Buxton fail, a lot has to go right elsewhere for the team to make the playoffs. Lets pray that isn't the case and Sano-Buxton have career seasons and the Twins play well into October! -
Article: BREAKING: Twins Flip Granite To Rangers
rdehring replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand that the Twins got $700,000 or $750,000 International Bonus Money from the Orioles. As I understand, it has to be used during this signing period, ie, before June 30 (or is it an earlier date?). I also recall that the Twins spent their entire allocation for the young outfielder from Venezuela (Urbana). Does anyone know if they signed any other prospects for more than the minimum (is it $5,000 or $10,000?) and are over the allocation and this trade will allow them to not have to deal with the penalty? If not already over, this will enable them to sign one or more late bloomers to contracts. Have to believe they have one or more players in mind if this is the case. Does anyone know anything about this? In any case, I really like them getting something in return for a player that had to be removed from the 40-man to make room for someone much more valuable to the team. Great maneuvering by the FO. -
Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Second Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Arraez is a real wild card for this team. Logic said he couldn't maintain his high average when he moved to Hi-A and then AA, except he did. Can he do it two more times, going to AAA and then the Twins? Most would say no, but Arraez may not be listening to them. If he does make it and ends up hitting .320+ in the big leagues, he will be a heck of a lead-off hitter. But with Lewis/Javier the future shortstop and Polanco moving to second, where does Arraez play? Seems to me he will be the most unusual DH in baseball, batting lead off for the Twins.- 27 replies

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Second Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Gordon hit a wall at AAA last summer, he hit a high hurdle at AA the previous summer. Don't know if he is wearing down the last half of the season, or what. Regardless, the second baseman of the future for the Twins is Polanco. We just don't know when that future will begin. Will it be this September? Or more likely summer 2020? Or maybe even 2021, when there could be two candidates clamoring for the job?- 27 replies

No twitter here, Seth. So will ask the old fashioned way. First, how have you been? Still juggling two jobs, TD and that window company? Also, still living up on the border? Always appreciate your work on those kids in the minors. Have a wonderful season!

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: First Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is always puzzling to me when reading about first base that there are several mentions of Kepler. Yes, he played some first base in the minors, but it wasn't that much...was it? But he is our best right fielder, one of the best in MLB. Yes, he does have a second position, but it is center field where he played quite a bit last year. I don't understand the constant mention of him at first base which would see someone who isn't as good as he playing right field. I say keep one of the best right fielders in the game in right field. Look for others to cover first base.- 47 replies

Traveling, so not reading a lot about the Twins first weekend on the field. Thought I saw that Rortvedt saw action on both Saturday and Sunday? If he did, it's encouraging that the Twins would have him out there so soon in the spring.- 67 replies

Great move that makes the Twins a better team today than yesterday. The only move/decision that needs to be made before the end of spring training is with the 40-man roster. Don't think they will DFA a pitcher as they only have 20. So to me, its gotta be an outfielder. They will have been in camp for a week, which I suspect gives them time to decide between Granite and Reed. Granite has the edge that he has options and the likelihood that Reed makes the final 25 is slim and getting slimmer. So I suspect they will DFA Reed and try to swing a deal for some kid playing in the rookie league somewhere.

Article: Musical Chairs In The Bullpen
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That means that one of the last two (Hildy or Romero) are in Rochester along with guys like Duffey and the funky lefty. All four pitched for the Twins last year with Hildy and Duffey on the roster all or most of the year. If three of the four are at Rochester, one has to say that the bullpen is stronger than last year. And that is a positive step for 2019. -
There is no reason not to expect Schoop to have a good year. Maybe not 2017 good, but certainly as good as the two years before that. If he does, it would go a long way towards putting the Twins in the playoff picture. My excitement about Gordon began to wane after his second half troubles in 2017. With 2018 in AAA now behind him, he is in the 'show me' category. My expectations don't include him as a starter for the Twins...not in 2019, or beyond. Maybe he will make me change those expectations, much as Stewart has made me re-think my opinions of the last few years.

In answer to your question, why? We have no idea how the coaching staff intends to use this bullpen. Will they be using Romero and Mejia in extended outings every 3-4 days, pitching 2, 3 or even 4 innings? If they do, that changes the work load on the other 5-6 guys in the pen. It also means that the other top relievers will not be overworked like the past few years, thus, more effective throughout the season. Lets get into spring training and see how these guys are used and how they are doing before raising the surrender flag. Maybe Reed and Parker will be exactly what they expect them to be and the bullpen will be a strength.

Article: Twins Daily 2019 Top Prospects: #1 Royce Lewis
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like all of us ole guys, I too have the hope to see one more championship. As for the steady approach, I see this group having a plan that is different than that of a man I hold great respect for. They seem to be more flexible in using all the tools available to them as the game is currently structured. Like you I hope, and pray, that they will get it done and not take too long in doing it.- 41 replies
