  1. What a wonderful first start for Smeltzer. Need to see more, but he just might be part of the answer for 2020 and beyond. Looking at that bullpen usage chart, it sure appears there is no reason for this team to not cut back to 12 pitchers when Cruz/Garver come off the IL.
  2. Isn't it great that you are all having this hot debate over whom the Twins should send down when A, B and C come off the IL. In recent years, there was an abundance of players worthy of demotion. What a great step forward for this team. As for my two cents, I think it is more important for Arraez to be playing every day than Astudillo. So when everyone is healthy, he seems to be the logical first choice. Don't have a clue what to do after that because that comes down to: 1) cutting back to 12 pitchers; 2) Adrianza, or 3) Astudillo.
  3. Well that's sure a surprise. Could Perez be battling the same illness that Kepler and others had over the weekend? I guess we will see what Smeltzer can do on the big stage.
  4. Would be nice to see Cave catch fire. Maybe yesterday was the start. The Twins need him to be playing well should the need arise. The first thing I do every evening when checking on the minors is go to Cedar Rapids to see how Javier did. Since returning he has played in only one game, sitting on Sunday and then the rain out. Maybe today he will see some action.
  5. I may have used the wrong word. Would have been better had I said "not as bad" or "better". What caught my eye was that he had several games that weren't ugly.
  6. In today's paper they talked about Odorizzi having been sick for a few days before yesterday's start. Although he was getting over it, wasn't 100%. Kepler also was dealing with the same bug which is why he was kept out of an earlier game...not the banged up knee we all knew about.
  7. With the Twins looking hard for someone, anyone, to step up and be a shutdown reliever, Romero is really struggling at Rochester. On the flip side, Tyler Jay has been pitching well of late by giving up no runs in 5 of his last 7 outings. Don't know about the rest of you, but I had pretty much forgotten about him. I like the results we are seeing from Josh Winder, who has been solid ever since drafted last June.
  8. Isn't it great to be rooting for a team that just might not lose 54?
  9. Couple more starts like this and it will be time to get Gibby extended for another 3 years. When that's done, get to work on Odorizzi.
  10. Excited to see Javier back in action. But all the rest is just plain sickening, Seth. With Graterol sidelined, looks like Balazovic is now our top gun of those pitching every five days. One name you didn't mention, Seth, is Jax. Is he expected to be out longer than a few weeks?
  11. What's amazing is the consistency with no ten game period with less than 6 wins.
  12. Ouch, 0 fer five last ngiht. When I saw how Thorpe did, my words were almost exactly yours, except I used nice instead of solid. Good seeing him with a 'solid' outing after being a bit inconsistent. Can't wait until tomorrow to see how those three starters do tonight. And who knows, maybe we will see Javier in the Kernel's lineup?
  13. How many of you remember back when Rosario and Sano were teammates in Elizabethton? Eddie won the Appy League Home Run Crown with 21, Miguel hit 20. Remember there were a lot of games like last night when they went.....BOOM.....BOOM!
  14. Perhaps the most beautiful words you have ever written, Nick: "The future is now." But like everyone, I am hopeful the bullpen will be stronger come July than it is today. A strength of this team seems to be its chemistry. Expect the FO will have to be very careful when adding a reliever, whether via trade or Kimbrel, by asking how they fit? I am hopeful, however, that part of the solution is already in the organization. Could it be someone already in the pen who takes that next step to dominance, perhaps May or Duffey? Or someone from the minors that comes up and provides that spark. On that front two possibilities are Romero and Graterol, should he be moved to the pen. Could that have been part of the reason for his appearance at Target Field yesterday? Then there is Hildenberger, who has been very good over the past couple years.
  15. Speaking of Jax, Seth, any word on his injury and how long he should be out?
  16. The thing that surprised me most about Akins, Seth, is how young he is. In his third year since being drafted out of college and he is only 22.
  17. Thanks, Seth. That is great that Escobar is in Florida. Can't wait to see how he does in the GCL to follow up to his great season in the DSL last year.
  18. Hey, Seth, have some questions about some of the really young prospects. Do the DSL Twins begin playing late next week? Assume Urbina will be on that squad. Any other big time 16-year olds from last year that we should follow? Also, have you heard whether Escobar will be back in the DSL or is he in Florida and will be with the GCL Twins this summer? Finally, with the cut-off to the 2018/2019 signing period approaching, did the Twins ever use the extra International dollars they picked up in that trade right before spring training?
  19. The biggest strength to this team is their ability to come back from any negative event. Whether that is falling behind and immediately scoring, or coming back from an ugly loss, their ability to recover is amazing. So if we are looking for weaknesses, I fear what will happen should they lose this ability to recover from a bad game/inning. Like many, I am anxious every time Pineda steps on the mound. But this isn't a major concern as they won't need a 5th starter in the playoffs. My bigger concern regarding starters is in 2020 and beyond. Considering none of the prospects at Rochester have stepped up and shown us they are ready to be more than a AAAA starter (I understand one or more may step up over the summer), they really need to get one of Odorizzi or Gibson extended by this summer. And like most, I see the most important move in July finding one very good late inning reliever who is under control for more than this year. I would think they have plenty of ammunition in the minors to make one smart move.
  20. Romero's excellent outing at Rochester might be the best news of the night. Also good to see Stewart continue putting up solid starts. Because he is a Badger state guy, have followed Schulfer more closely than many others from last year's draft. Walks a few too many, however, his results continue to be excellent. Wasn't all that long ago that there were real questions about the catching position in the organization. The Twins now have three good big league catchers, including two who will be around for many years. With Rortvedt moving up to AA and Jeffers hitting well at Hi-A, they have two more good prospects not that far off. That's very good depth at a critical position, although they could use another good prospect In Rookie ball from this year's draft.
  21. There is no reason to believe he is going to hit in the low 200's. This kid has hit for an average no lower than .310 (2018 at Hi-A and AA) and closer to .350 every year since signing back when he was 16. There is no reason to expect he is going to hit for an average less than .300 in the big leagues. But you are right, he isn't likely to keep hitting at a +.600 clip.
  22. I see that the Twins writer had a piece mentioning Javier this morning. Like everyone, he is saying he is expected back on the field soon. Am anxious to see how Stewart does tonight as I expect the Twins will need him for more than a spot double header start before the season is over.
