    All posturing..... The Twins (or Dodgers) will end up adding a throw away prospect outside of our/their top 20 to get it done while giving the Red Sox the appearance of saving face (when in reality they will have gotten nothing more of value). No question that it is absolute amateur hour going on in the Red Sox organization and that this could have a negative impact on their future dealings.

    Great post. I would highlight that bullpen depth in AAA could become essential when/if the rotation strings together too many outings of 5 inning pitched or less....which is a a definite concern with the rotation as currently constructed (eh, cough...Odo and two rookies... eh cough).

    I think that this is more a referendum on his change up than a 'win now' philosophy. If his change up was MLB ready, there is no question in my mind that he would begin the season as a starter and then perhaps transition to the bullpen when Pineda and/or Hill were ready (to conserve innings at that point). The coaches clearly don't think the change up is MLB ready. Therefore providing value in the bullpen as one of the organizations 13 best pitchers is the way to go! Hopefully our pitching whisperers will work their magic during practice throughout the season... because it is pitch development and not innings progression that will ultimately determine his fate.

    Kudos to the FO! (from someone who was hyper critical of their FA performance previously) They still need to pull a rabbit out of the hat to solidify our SP rotation which will now realistically need to be developed by our elite internal coaching. Could happen, but either way, that line up is going to be CRAZY fun to watch. Fingers Crossed

    I'm worried that Odorizzi is going to have a major regression.... very worried. And we just don't have any buffer worked into our 2 pitcher + prospects plan for our starting rotation breaking out of camp. I just seems like a big risk right now. But, even if the SP rotation implodes, boy o boy o boy that line up will be FUN to watch every-single-night

    Nice Post....Could not agree more with the optics of haggling over $375,000 with the player you hope to be the face of the team for years to come. Even if this is posturing in the greater picture of extension negotiations, it is still crazy. Just @#$%-ing crazy!

    Disagree. Gibby's colitis will be just fine on immunosuppression. And he is more talented than Bailey..and 10mil per year is pretty cheap for potentially a #3 SP

    Yes....because they know a little secret.....that 40 year olds with a history of torn tendons in their throwing elbow who recently had a fairly new surgical procedure....are not so much a risk as an inevitable disaster. Good on him to squeeze an extra 3 mil out of his career though!

    Though very (pleasantly) surprised by Garver's Pit/PA and BB%.... This makes me more confident that his 2019 performance is repeatable!

    Uh Oh.... two TD articles in a row priming us for "what our options" will be when Donaldson signs elsewhere. Me thinks there has been some leakage about the FO being out on him and some preemptive SPIN!

    I'll refrain from rolling out my now tired complaints about the offseason I do like that you brought up Gibson. It was my understanding that we let Gibson go because we intended to add that money to a pile of other money to get 'impact' pitching. Which made sense....except that is not what we did. We took 1/3 of the price of Gibson's contract to sign a likely inferior pitcher in addition to a 40 year old coming off a new-ish surgery to repair an older surgery to HIS ELBOW LIGAMENT IN HIS THROWING ARM! (holy crap!). Yes, Gibson has an inflammatory bowel disease, but there is a MUCH better chance that this can be managed medically going forward (especially with an off season to get onto a stable regiment of steroid sparing chronic immunosuppression therapy).... than a torn ligament in the throwing elbow of a 40 year old pitcher. In summary, Nick, you bring up an interesting discussion.point.... would we have been better off signing Gibson to 30 mil at 3 years or the dynamic duo above? I personally think that Hill will not be able to provide a significant impact and that Gibson will be better than Homer...so....interesting. And remember in this thought experiment....we are back to having exactly ONE pitcher under contract AGAIN next off season!!!

    A lot of 'ifs' on health, non-PED performance, and avoiding regression but even if we avoid all of those 'ifs', The above playoff rotation simply will not prevail over a legit playoff rotation which will be fielded by NY/Houston/and possibly others. An established #1 starter provides much needed confidence to the entire team in playoff games. Much like an elite hockey goalie, there is just no substitute in the playoffs. Believe me, I wish there was....

    We are in no better position to be competitive in the playoffs (if we make it). Ergo.....failed off season to date. I remain impressed with the FO's ability to draft and develop players as well has hire coaches but.... Continue to think that their refusal to take needed risk with either FA signings or trading top prospects will ultimately prevent us from being anything more than above average-ish

    Bottom line: The FO has done absolutely nothing yet during the off seaseon that increases our chances of playoff success next year. Everything else is just background noise

    Angles have urgency and money and lost out on the FA. My guess is it will be them

    We are going to have to part with at least 1 and likely 2 of our top 5 prospects to get impact SP. Not trying to be pessimistic....that is just reality Sano is the only one in the group that will move the needle of any SP trade. But again, he is more "win now" and teams trading SP usually want top prospects to sell "win later" to their fans.
