  1. If Hughes and Berrios are not ready....and Justin Haley pitches well in ST...AND Mercury is in retrograde....any chance for Haley to just be the 5th starter (others have options)? Might as well see what we really have (and return to sender if we don't like him) in this first season of a 3-5 year plan. It seems like we have a pending glut of cheap-controlled-home-grown relievers, so if not starter material....he may not be needed.
  2. I'm simultaneously happy that we managed to get him for Nunez but sad that he is our #7 prospect. I'm more curious about the slot of Garver...I feel like "good chance to be an average to above average starting catcher" is better than "a young wild card slugger", "an wild card batter without a clear defensive capability anywhere in the infield yet", "a young pitcher with promise but a potential fatal K/BB flaw." and a "if everything breaks right, he could very well be a back of the rotation starter!" But most importantly, I've never seen any of these guys play in person, so I'm honestly interested in what better baseball minds and eyes have to say. Did anyone on the TD staff rate Garver higher?
  3. I know this is sacrilegious in the age of analytics, but I do think this guy is a stone cold competitor who will do everything he can to make the needed adjustments. That said... THE FO top priority HAS to be getting the minor league pitching instruction RIGHT. We have a handful of high upside pitching prospects that could go either way and our medium and long term success completely depends on the outcome (because we all know that a FA ACE is not in our future...like ever). ....Master of the obvious....I know Nick -- have there been any significant changes in the minor league pitching coaches/instructors since the new FO took over? .... Would be interesting to know
  4. I believe there is exactly a zero percent chance that Molitor is the manager starting next season. The new FO has a 3-5 year vision to win big and Molitor's management style/philosophy is not even in the same universe. The ownership is not just not interested in paying two managers this year. And there really is no rush. The FO has plenty of other things to figure out, some of which may impact who they think will be the best manager for this team long term.
  5. Besides Diaz, a pretty uninspiring bunch for these positions in the minors....
  6. Lower minors have some exciting players; Very much looking forward to the TD minor league reports!
  7. This! More specifically, I hope that Grossman lasts only as long as it takes for Granite to take the final steps toward becoming a valuable 4th OF/(actual)pinch runner etc. I'm really rooting for that guy!
  8. Hopefully our current young group of players can progress and mesh into something close to the 1987 team. While I'm not optomistic about the outcome of this season, I am excited to SEE THE KIDS PLAY! May Mr. Kelly hit fungos in spring training for years to come!!!
  9. It would (will) be very interesting to see Dozier play a full season in a more fitting line up position with consistent protection behind him (and not pressing to do it all himself)...it could make a significant difference...
  10. ?? Option #4 ?? (though obviously also not ideal)....Escobar at short with Planco getting reps at multiple positions throughout the week (2B, 3B, SS, OF)....averaging 4-ish games a week until Dozier situation gets worked out? I guess my honest question is how bad is Escobar's defense vs. Planco's?
  11. Every time I see the name "Phil Hughes", I think "wildly unnecessary contact extension." Go New FO! Let's hope for his sake and his livelihood that he recovers. But, I honestly don't think that him returning to #3 starter quality (versus washing out) is going to move the needle that much for the twins season (it would be great if he played well enough to trade him...but alas...the limits of said contract). In fact, we'll probably be better off in the long run moving toward youth ASAP.
  12. He was an exceptional talent and hometown story. We will be happy and thankful for him for years to come as he contributes off the field to the team and community. He earned every cent given from the Twins via his play and marketing over his entire career. BUT...It is my hope that they platoon him and/or give him multiple days off a week as mentioned previously. Place him in situations to succeed as much as possible. This will benefit the player, team, and fans. Joe...the first step is admitting there is a problem...
  13. When the "good" is "sharing co-American League Player of the week honors" .... that's pretty much all that needs to be said.
  14. Agreed....New data and circumstance would change the construct (and/or desire depending on the level of back room rancor) for any future LA deal. Let's hope for a few other GMs sitting on increasingly warmer seats in the same division/league to come sniffing mid-season.
  15. We are rightfully concerned that Dozier my lose value during the season. But, I think we stand to gain A LOT more information about JDL than they stand to learn about Dozier during the first half of the season...which could alleviate some concerns about a trade-center piece with a potential "pre-existing condition." Also, the risk of waiting is worth the benefit that an actual competitive market may manifest sometime over the next year to drive up demand. And we have more time than they do. Even with young player progression, this team is not going to threaten anyone in 2017. (not going anywhere for a while.....)
