  1. Mauer was an outstanding talent and we were fotunate to have him (Mark Prior anyone?!) He earned every penny that the Twins have paid him over his entire career. He will be an asset to the community and possibly the Twins after he retires. Having said that, he has not been the same player since the injury. I hope for his sake and the team's sake that he is utilized as described in multiple posts above for his last two years
  2. Ummm. While the Indian starters were not in the same league as the Cubs starters....they were waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the Twins starters. We'll use WAR acknowledging that all stats have their limitations: Kluber: 6.5 Carrasco: 3.6 Bauer: 3.0 Salazar: 2.9 Tomlin 1.6 Twins: Santana: 3.8 Gibson:0.6 Duffey: -1.6 I'll stop there to avoid making TD readers nauseous. Starting pitching is not either outstanding or not. There is a continuum. Starting pitching needs to be at least good/solid for an elite bullpen to matter. The bullpen will not save the day without solid starting pitching. And there is still a loooooooooong way to go before we can claim even an above average bullpen Some of the injuries happened at the end of season and as pointed out by others, a bullpen can better cover for this in the playoffs.
  3. There is a lot of middle ground between #1 pitcher and relief pitcher... and a long way to go to know where 7-40 players settle out. We drafted ultimately drafted a relief pitcher at #6 who turned out to be …… a relief pitcher. This simply cannot be considered a positive. The aggressive positive spin is making me dizzy again. Even indirect comparisons to the current elite MLB relief pitchers is just ridiculous.
  4. "During last year's postseason fans saw the importance of dominant relief pitchers like Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman." This was on teams with actual starting pitching. The current Twins do not have anywhere near playoff starting pitching. There is a reason that the Yankees traded the relief assets they did last year for young talent....they did not have the starting pitching to win that year, therefore making the elite relief superfluous (and they could just sign them back if they wanted Again....Jay to the bullpen may indeed allow the twins to get the most out of him. But the pick at #6 for a relief pitcher will remain a disappointment no matter how many times we spin in circles. (And I dost think that we are getting a wee bit ahead of ourselves to think that transitioning Jay to the pen automatically equates to a top 5 MLB reliever.
  5. I don't think the "wind blowing in" helped get Duffy 10 Ks.... Nice work.... good to see him pitching well (which he will need to do to serve the team well in the starting line up or the pen)
  6. Nice research, but the answer to the question is still a simple no.
  7. Outstanding! (still laughing) Quick mental exercise. If we release DanSan would he be on another MLB 25 man roster on opening day? I for one would bet no, which would make us taking him North...just a wee bit sad.
  8. Chargois at the 72nd pick.....Jay at #6......ugh. (sorry, wrong thread)
  9. A player who was drafted specifically for his prospect to be a future #1/#2 has already washed out as a starter. This is the problem that I was pointing out (not as to whether he currently has --or has ever had--- the potential to be a #1/#2...this is not my job as I'm neither a scout, nor have I seen him play in person). Luckily we have history to instruct us about how the Twins valued a potential closer...That would be the 72nd pick (Chargois) which is a looooong way from #6. But, this FO did not make that pick, so I agree that we must let them find the best way to fix a mess that was not of their making. If Jay to the pen is a small part of that fix, outstanding. However, We cannot and should not spin this as not-really-that-big-of-deal.
  10. I think the truth is somewhere in between. This is not the end of any hope to build a winning team. BUT it most certainly matters. Jay was 1 of 2 pitchers (see Romero) in the system with the talent to be a #1 or #2 starter. The Twins will never cough up the 150+ mil a year for an ACE in FA. Having 2 high end starters is very important to actually being successful IF a team makes the playoffs. I think this changes the outlook of having a SUCCESSFUL playoff team somewhere between some to kind-of-a-lot.
  11. "Next offseason it'll be a different story, however, and the Twins should be in a great position to make a big splash. Can't imagine the Pohlad's approving a marquee signing? Well, they have very little money tied up beyond 2018, so there should be plenty of room in the budget." Fortunately we have history to guide us. We have had "plenty of room in the budget" in the past (see early years of Target Field) without any big FA signing. Having said that, I actually agree with pumping money into scouting and development to build a foundation for lasting success. If we are wishing on stars, I also agree with Darvish based on your list
  12. 8 out of 11 strikeouts?! We all talk about how important it is to miss bats at any level, so...yeah...very nice even in spring training. I vote that we ONLY trade with San Francisco in the future (Have we ever 'lost' a trade with them?)
  13. Thanks for all the details that make the game interesting Seth
  14. I cannot express how much more that I want to see what Park and Vargas can bring to the table. We need to learn as much as possible this year to make solid plans going forward, not see if we can squeeze 2-3 additional (ultimately meaningless) wins at the expense of gaining important information for the future. I personally don't see Grossman as part of those future plans.
  15. So I guess what we can all agree on then is that his change-up is still a non-starter (after many years).... It will be interesting to see how long the current experiment lasts.
  16. Dear Twins, This year, I don't ask for a world championship, a trip to the playoffs, or even a winning season..... but please, please, please do NOT subject me to DanSan on the 25 man roster. Dear Granite, Please, please, please continue your progression to free us from DanSan...and Grossman.... and Stubbs....and whoever that other random outfielder we signed to a minor league contract.
  17. Seeing it in print should remind us all that our pitching should make us VERY nerveous this year.... I hope it works out, but yikes!
  18. Fear not....Molitor will not last past this year. Ownership does not want to pay two salaries. The new FO does not want to make a long term decision on a manager until they have a better idea of the future make up of the team.
  19. Three hits, two walks and 45 pitches over 2 innings with a fastball in the 80s?! Wow, I hope he doesn't get vertigo with all the postitive spin going on.....
  20. No worries....these catchers will play themselves to exactly the place they should be over the first 2-3 months of the year (in JM's case, I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be right out of the organization... and in Garver's case up to the majors to stay)....and this team has nothing but time right now.
  21. Similar to our discussions about minor league short stops....I'm simply happy that we have enough catchers this year that warrant discussion!
  22. I reached 1987 #3 pitcher Les Straker for comment on the above. He said: "Ummm, scary is an understatement"
  23. Just to pile on....last year alone, I think that May, Meyers, and Sano were handled pretty poorly. And this was not outcome bias at TD. I remember many posters that were exacerbated real time (yes, I think that the OF even stunted his offense last year).
