    And late in the season. I'm still a Royce Lewis believer, but even with him, this club looks to have about 4 players I'm happy to plug into the top or middle of the order, and than about a dozen guys you want hitting 8th or 9th.

    Oof, what shape is that? A pear? This might be the least inspiring offense this franchise has run out there since 2013.

    I'm not a huge fan of the 'cult hero' players anymore. Even the actual hero players can be a chore to deal with on this site. You have to walk a tightrope if you want to say something less than flattering about Astudillo or Dobnak. But if you have any intention of being critical of Eddie Rosario or Max Kepler, you might need to think about going into witness protection. Man, being a fan pre-internet was waaaaaay easier.

    I wouldn't call it a sweet spot. If you can draft and develop, you should be giving these low wattage free agents 600 PAs a season combined. If you can't or won't draft and develop your own players, you need to sign high wattage free agents.

    Thanks, it will likely be the same thing I'm always doing though; stump for more offense. Also, hahahaha, of course it was the dreadful White Sox that signed Brandon Drury!

    Lol. Yeah, and overall, he was probably a good manager who continually got stuck with subpar talent. I'm sure playing not to lose ends up being a self preservation tactic at some point. I'll bet outside of his expansion Expos, his teams probably rarely finished in LAST place.

    Mauch sounds most likely. I doubt John Wooden ever played a close game in his life. Sorry, playing not to lose instead of to win is passive and cowardly in my book. Take a chance and script every one of your games to win.

    To be clear, I don’t trade Vazquez because I think it improves the club; I think any improvement is negligible to negative, but not impactful to the team record. I trade him to force Baldelli out of his zero-ceiling comfort zone, which I do think can impact the record. He has to start being more concerned with winning games as opposed to being concerned with losing games.

    I'm not against having a good outfield defense, I just don't think it should come at the expense of a good offense. How many fewer balls per week actually land for hits if you have a good defense compared to merely an OK defense? One? Maybe two? It just doesn't make up for the lack of extra hits and runs you give up by prioritizing a better offense. Go ahead, put together a good defensive outfield, but also make sure it's a good offensive outfield. That should forever and always be the priority.

I have never heard this reporter tied to anything Minnesota news. She's a ESPN/The Athletic reporter out of New York. This sounds like garbage being pushed by Rodgers' camp.

    No Rodgers and no Wilson for me. I don't really want Cousins back either, and I wouldn't give up a pick for him.

    I'm still shocked Jones didn't miss a game last year. The way these things work, it probably means he starts missing games by week three next season. I'm all for getting a dynamic RB early in the draft.

    Rodgers loves attention, I could see him drag this out a long time just so people keep talking about him. Of course the teams that want him could decide to move on. But I have a feeling the Cousins/Atlanta dynamic is so quiet because Atlanta is waiting to see what happens with this two peers, then they'll try to shop Cousins to the desperate teams. Honestly, if I was an objective GM, I'd probably rather have Cousins over both Rodgers and Wilson though.

    Aaaaaaaand it's over. NFL free agency is so crazy. There will be more signings, but all the best players are gone and there is zero urgency any longer. The breaking-news cycle of signings has all but dried up. Just another way that the NFL is completely opposite of MLB.

    The overlap is terrible, but also, why do some have the team names, while others have the city name? And why is the team in Denver the only one with both?

    Yeah, they can still do something big. Though there aren't a lot of big moves to be made still. Might be some good players later that other teams need to move. Still some good safeties out there, but the Vikings have been good at developing their own. I also wouldn't mind another LB who can play coverage. The defense really struggled with Pace was forced to do it all. I don't know their pass coverage grades, but Kyzer White and EJ Speed look like upgrades. Probably also have to think about LT in case Darrisaw is slow to get back up to speed. That's probably a spot you have to wait on though. Can't just pay a starting LT backup money. I'm not sure about Kupp, or any other big name WR though. I'm thinking you'll end up with a Jordan Addison problem if you do. I could see this as his last year in Minnesota, as I'm not sure you give him a big contract, but I'd still rather have him than an aging Kupp or Amari Cooper this year.

    Seems like basing that decision on 6 games may have been an overreaction. And not basing it on two seasons in a row of Vazquez having a sub .600 OPS likely an under-reaction. I get the hesitancy to play the no-name, untested options. But if Vazquez wasn't paid 10M per year, he'd be playing DFA musical chairs for the last two seasons. I just don't get the big loss.

    Has he proven that? Wouldn't that though apply to pretty much be every batter on the roster? More likely, it seems the manager just loves to give equal plate appearances to veteran players, regardless of their skill with the bat.

    I don't know. I guess I can take other's words for it, but I've never had a job that had a 'mentor' situation for me, and I've had a lot of jobs. Sure, I've had older coworkers, but that 'take me under your wing' stuff I've only see in movies.

    Or future equity? If the guy looks passable, or even better yet, if Darnold and Jones look good in their new homes, any 'rebound' QB under KOC is going to have interest next year. I mean, Flacco is basically the same age as KOC and McCown. Seems like the coaches should be mentor enough.

    Agreed, that obviously has the biggest potential payoff, even if it also has the lowest potential payoff. I mean, if we actually have to turn to the backup QB, we're probably no longer very excited about the season anyway.

    I could see reasons for them trying any of the last six. At this point, Lance is probably the only one who has a shot at doing the Darnold/Mayfield/Smith impression though. Very little interest, but if they want the mentor/mentee bit, Flacco stands out. That's not exactly what I'd be looking for, but it's a common trope in the sports circles for sure.

    Whoever it is, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a two year deal. So that if the guy DOES play and perform, they can trade him the following year.
