  1. Pelfrey wasn't good and I'd prefer other options, lots of other options. Still, a year removed from TJ surgery, I actually might prefer a two year deal because he actually might have some trade value down the road as strange as that might sound.
  2. I don't know why the Twins can't just draw a hard line for Pelfrey. Take it or leave it, last year wasn't very good. I know his agent is Scott Boras, but unless the Twins are trying to butter Boras up and give him a "moral" victory to help them with future negotiations (Please Alex Meyer, switch agents now!), I don't know who they think they are competing against. I really doubt another team has a better offer out there in terms of both money and years.
  3. It seems a lot of the optimism here is due to the re-siging of a glory years Twins. But take away the familiarity factor, this might get even more positive attention. If Kubel had put up the same modest (with a few years of excellence) production with a club not named the Twins, we would probably be pretty damn excited about getting this guy on a minor league deal. He's one year removed from six straight seasons of 105+ OPS+. If his name was Joe Blow who played his whole career with the Marlins I think we'd be stoked.
  4. On a minor league deal. That's a pretty good signing. They don't have to work out the Doumit/Parmelee/Colabello log jam just yet.
  5. There's not much room for either. I guess I'd go for Montero if Doumit gets moved but I wouldn't pay much. He seems young enough that you'd want to give him regular at bats so you can see if he still can develop. Not sure there is going to be a full time DH this year though.
  6. I'd think the right-handed Colabello would need to be released. They look pretty similar though Colabello stuck out less in the minors, which hasn't translated well to the majors.
  7. A Pinto injury would stink, but I also think we are getting carried away with the catcher speculation. We've been spoiled at catcher for over a decade. Plenty of teams don't have a good one and still compete; it seems like it is one of the easiest team flaws to cover up. I'm fine with a small cost vet joining the squad, but there are still bigger fish to fry on this roster.
  8. Might be the best news of the offseason, and it's been a pretty good offseason.
  9. Agreed that Santana might be too high, though prospect rankers do love their shortstops. I'm not as high on Walker as many are, mostly because of his low BB/OBP skills, but he's normally in this range.
  10. And not all games are played at Target Field. At this point, if the Twins don't snag Garza, I think I'd prefer a cheap lotto ticket on a 1 or 1 and an option year deal. I think Floyd, Niemann and Santana would be pretty exciting, and if we find later they can't cut it, well that's what all the depth is for. These kind of guys have a potential to bring a return at the trade deadline if healthy and have an outside chance at being worth a qualifying offer at year's end. They also have the potential to be the best arm on the staff.
  11. I see the Dodgers traded for Seth Rosin who just selected by the Mets in the Rule V. They must really like their Minnesota pitchers. In the Rule IV draft their first two picks were Chris Anderson and Tom Windle.
  12. So have I. Alas no bikini ads for me.
  13. Gibson can't even make this sorry list with the likes of Deduno, Worley, Correa and Tonkin? I wonder if the hosting Twins will be able to manage more than one All-Star this year. One would think Mauer and Perkins have a good shot, but you never know when an injury or slump might occur.
  14. I don't really like Pelfrey back, but of he and Arroyo, at least Pelfrey won't cost three years, and he won't be nearly 40 when the contract expires.
  15. Not a lot of action this year, only nine selections in the MLB section. I liked Brian Moran but in all honesty I didn't know the guy aside from his numbers. Interesting that the Brewers took a Rookie League pitcher. He's a 22-year-old Korean, they must think he's pretty advanced. With the Brewers taking that leap, maybe it was good to protect Polanco and Kepler after all.
  16. But the other rumor is that the Angels aren't close to signing anyone and Garza may be ready to sign in the next 24-48 hours. The Twins know they can't get Tanaka, the Dbacks and Angels think they can. Garza signing before Tanaka is posted is a big win for the Twins.
  17. So today we've heard the following four rumors: The Dbacks, Angels and Twins have been talking to Garza. Garza expects to sign in the next 24-48 hours. Kevin Towers won't give any free agent five years aside from Tanaka, who is their top priority, and he can't see the team giving four years. The Angels aren't close to signing anyone. All these rumors are just that, rumors. But if they are accurate, one would have to think the Twins are the front runners for Garza.
  18. The Mets got Colon on a two year deal. I think that's a "whew" in my book. The Pirates also got Edinson Volquez. He was a sleeper I was interested in but considering the Francisco Liriano journey, going to Pittsburgh was likely a smart move. Going to Minnesota would have been the opposite.
  19. If the Twins do sign a third free agent starter, one would have to imagine they'll start shopping the others. Worley, Diamond and Deduno likely don't have much trade value, but someone will want them. With the winter meetings underway, I'm a little surprised we haven't heard any trade rumors regarding them, Gibson, the recently DFA'd Hendriks or any bullpen arms. Or maybe they are such low profile guys no one is bothering to report on that action.
  20. Well once the Mariners check their 40-man and realize they have four 1B/DH types he'll probably be back on the trade block.
  21. Depends on how long they wait to offer extensions. If one of them turns into a super-star with the ability to be mentioned in the same breath as Mike Trout, I'd prefer the Twins to look to lock them up very early. If the Twins had Trout and were treating him the way the Angels currently are, I'd be getting pretty worried. I'd be talking extension now, if not last off-season.
  22. They probably don't but Nolasco and Hughes' numbers don't really equal what they got either. I'm really curious to find out what Garza gets, it wasn't long ago people assumed he would get Anibal Sanchez money. Now your figures seem more in line and I'd definately rather have Garza on that deal than Nolasco on his.
  23. I don't see a poll. Is Arcia one of the options? I pick him if he was considered a disappointment last year.
  24. After Garza, it's tough to rank these guys. The Twins offered Pelfery 2 years but he clearly either wants more years or money. Colon on a one year deal would be boring but acceptable, but the trouble is he wants two years. I don't trust Arroyo to be productive much longer but two years isn't a huge risk. The problem here is that reports say he will be getting three years from whomever signs him. I'd be OK with these pitchers under these circumstances: Garza: 4-5 years at fairly ugly money but not as ugly as it may have looked at the outset Pelfrey: 2 years at cheap money with an eye on moving him this time next year Colon: 1 year and move him at the deadline if the Twins are not competitive Arroyo: 2 years and hold your nose at the likely unmovable $13 million he will cost in 2015 Strangely, only the Garza scenario seems likely at this point. I really don't want the Twins to give extra years to guys who don't look to have extra years left in the tank.
  25. Joel Sherman says it's looking like Arroyo will be getting a 3 year $36 million deal from whomever signs him. I think that 3rd year should make all Twins fans uneasy. Also Jason Stark says Garza may be close to signing and the Diamondbacks and Twins are the teams being mentioned, though the Diamondbacks appear to be the front runner.
