  1. But I think the only sharks left are really only suited to DH and require a compensation pick.
  2. Yeah, he looks smooth and does have a good stride. Most Twins pitchers don't stride much and I hope shortening the stride is not an organizational decision that they will later do with Thorpe.
  3. I would because you actually get to swap him for Escobar and Mastroianni opening up a bench spot for a extra bat. Also like Escobar he's a switch hitter which is nice. His OPS stinks outside of 2011, but if you take out his time in Toronto he is able to get on base at an above average mark which is something the Twins have been lacking in these kind of role players.
  4. Jim Bowden says the Red Sox have a two year offer out to Drew. If the assumption is that Drew would prefer play for a winner and stay where he's familiar, that almost surely means the Twins would have to offer three years which I hope is a deal breaker. Of course Jim Bowden has proven to be inaccurate and delusional many times.
  5. Yeah, I'm a fan of him as a super utility guy. He was terrible in Toronto last year but a .358 OBP after his move to KC and marks of .360 and .330 the previous two seasons. That's quite an upgrade to the 4th OF/MI options this team normally runs out there.
  6. Johan Santana is the obvious name to scare teams, but Wei-Chung Wang just got picked out of Rookie League this year. I don't think this was as large of a problem in the past, but there seems to be a sizable gap between the contenders and the pretenders at the moment and the pretenders are now more open to acknowledging that they are rebuilding. I would think that mindset would make them more willing to sit on a young top prospect. The player may not stick, but you're still taking a chance that they will because a deadbeat team like the Astros, Marlins (or Twins) may hang on to the guy due to a nothing to lose attitude.
  7. Leave Me Bling.
  8. Yup, I agree, though plenty of pitchers go down preseason or show up to camp with a medical issue more serious than originally thought. An in season or preseason trade of Correia makes sense anyway unless the team is actually planning on handing Meyer or Gibson a sport right out of the gate. Of course an in season trade only works if Correia overachieves like he did last year. I think many of us have forgotten how low our expectations for him were last year. If he pitches to those expectations, then DFA will be more likely than a trade.
  9. Capuano only requires one year. That's kind of what I'm looking for in pitching at this point.
  10. I agree that the Nolasco deal isn't as good as first percieved, but I'm still happy the Twins showed some agression. Still, it could be worse, the Twins could have given Jason Vargas a 4 year deal instead. The Royals are probably the team that's kicking themselves right now.
  11. Yes, having to hope that bat speed improves isn't a very strong indicator of success. Is it just me, or does it seem that lately, the "gurus" have been putting an even greater emphasis on defensive SS than in the past, and the emphasis was already pretty high to begin with. In the age of the strikeout, defense is minimized not accentuated.
  12. I agree it would get annoying, but he's supposed to be a professional. He should just ignore that question just like he did with the other 500 just like it. I like the fact that in this day and age, these guys are able to interact with fans but he's at work, he should still act like he's in a boardroom even if he's actually lying in bed.
  13. Boston is having a hard time getting a team to bite on their comp pick right now after his best and least injury filled season in three years. I don't think the Twins can count on getting much for him at $10M per unless you think he's actually going to improve off last season. That would seem to be quite a longshot considering his splits away from Fenway.
  14. Sounds more like mentor. I'm all for overpaying for a mentor-clubhouse leader type. I wasn't a big fan of the Pelfrey signing, but if the young arms this team NEEDS to develop look to this guy for leadership and advice, it's a worthwhile signing in my book.
  15. And it's interesting that a big-name, well-rounded prospect such as himself isn't campaigning for the middle of the lineup.
  16. And with college guys Rodon, Hoffman, Beede and Turner near the top of the boards, there may be money to spend on a tough sign HS kid come round two. I'd gladly give up the pick for a player I wanted long term, but I don't want Drew long term.
  17. I didn't like the Correia deal and 2/10 is too much for Yoon. I also wasn't a fan of the Pelfrey deal, however the difference is that this year these were the number 4-5 type deals as opposed to past years where these signings were supposed to anchor the rotation. Also I want nothing to do with Bartolo Colon away for two years away from the gigantic Oakland Coliseum. The Mets will be trying to dump him by June.
  18. Almost certainly the guy who will best help the team win. Ask Jacque Jones circa 2010.
  19. You don't have to dump anyone. If he's not good enough he goes to Rochester unless he has some kind of opt out clause in which case he's released, nothing lost. You can't seriously argue that the Twins should never use minor league free agency. Also, Carl Willis didn't prevent the Twins from winning the championship in 1991. He was a pretty solid grab actually.
  20. I don't remember this much outrage when they signed Josh Roenicke, Antoan Richardson or Wilken Rameriz last year. So are you saying the Twins should never again sign a player to a minor league deal, or are you saying the Twins should never sign a former Twin to a minor league deal?
  21. This seems about par for the course when it comes to off season minor league free agents. The only reason Kubel, Bartlett and Guerrier are different than Brandon Boggs, Kevin Kouzmanoff, and Luis Perdomo is because they used to wear Twins uniforms. Actually I take that back, this isn't par for the course. I'd much rather take a flier on Kubel, Bartlett and Guerrier than Boggs, Kouzmanoff and Perdomo.
  22. TR: We're putting the band back together. Johan Santana: Forget it. No way Gardy: We're on a mission from God.
  23. http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/49930/twins-of-byron-buxton Looks like Sportsnation has a chat with BB at 1:30 today. Bonus: Buck is curretnly gracing the front page of ESPN's site.
  24. I also don't put much stock into framing stats as they make the assumption that an umpire doesn't already have a preconcieved notion of the pitchers strike zone tendancies. This however I can buy. A breakdown of K% and BB% compared to his teamates catching the same pitchers is persuasive. The only thing it doesn't account for is possiblity of pitchers using (or not using) Suzuki as their personal catcher, ala Scott Erickson and Junior Ortiz, Francisco Liriano and Drew Butera. However sub-par pitchers (those that would make inflate/deflate Suzukis BB and K numbers) don't generally get personal catchers.
  25. BP also was among the lowest of Sano's rankings last year too. The seem to value shortstops and defense much more than others.
