  1. I like it. I'm a fan of those top 5.
  2. I'm glad to have this guy, but I think the disappointment stemmed more from the Twins not going after the top tier Latin players. They generally go very early in the process and the Twins haven't been as active on that front. I'm not judging the Twins method here, just trying to point out what I believe is the real complaint. I'd guess had the Twins signed Eloy Jimenez or Mickar Zapata there would probably have been less dissent about the spending habits even if there was money left over.
  3. No, I think people are interpreting the contracts incorrectly. The Twins allegedly offered three years with an option for a fourth. The Brewers offered four years with an option for a fifth. Garza took the better deal as far as guaranteed money goes. Almost all free agents hold out for more years even though in almost every case they could get a slightly better average per year on a shorter deal. No doubt Nolasco did the same thing.
  4. The problem in past years was that the Twins ONLY went bargain shopping in free agency. They've already topped all expecatations as far as I'm concerned. At this point, I'd be more than happy if the Twins grabbed a wild card or two. Johan Santana, Joel Hanrahan or Oliver Perez would interest me. I've never been a Joe Saunders fan, but getting him on a minor league deal would be a steal.
  5. Well "very different" certainly didn't mean "very difficult" so far for Thorpe. If only all prospects could adjust in the manor Thorpe has, on the field that is. It also occurs to me that the Twins used their International cash on two guys who may be mirror images of each other, with Lewin Diaz being the other. Add DJ Hicks and Kennys Vargas and you'd hope one of them ends up being a big bat 1B/DH type.
  6. Using a metric coverter looks like he's 6'3" 250 lbs. That's a pretty hefty 18 year old. Looks like a right handed Jim Thome type. Also, I never knew Australians spelled practice wrong!
  7. I'm getting a targeted ad that says something along the lines of 'say these magic words to make HIM fall madly in love with you!' What the hell was I searching for to get that!?
  8. Which is a far cry from "analyst x hates my team, or doesn't like my favorite player enough"
  9. Well that's good since I never said anything like that. The fact of the matter is Klaw and other journalists need the orgainzations and scouts for access. The orgainzations don't need Klaw other then if they really want to disseminate information, a tactic which is pretty contradictory to how the Twins operate.
  10. I'd agree but the terribly track record of HS catchers points to the difficulty of developing the position in the minors while maintaining offensive credibility. It might not make a lot of sense, but HS catchers just aren't developing into top end catchers any more.
  11. Agreed, the sooner it is assumed he won't catch, the more likely it is that his bat is for real. That's the point I'm interested in him. I wouldn't want him "working" on his defense in the minors at the expense of his offensive development.
  12. Thank you good man for bringing the car around, here's a little something for you.
  13. How about he helps beat the Yankees in game 162 which gives the Twins the wild card birth?
  14. However he'd be an expensive stopgap costing a draft pick. I think Willingham ends up playing more DH than anyone. In what looks like another losing season, I don't know that I'd give up the 2nd rounder for one year of Morales instead of the Willingham/Kubel combo. Morales looks destined for a one year deal. If the Twins still need a DH in 2015, then I'd look to him once the current crop of slow-footed, corner-type vets and busts are gone.
  15. I'll get interested in Jackson once it's been widely disseminated that he will not be catching at the MLB level. Taking a HS catcher has been an awful choice for teams since Mauer and Brian McCann were selected in 2000-01. The best has been Jared Saltalimacchia with a whopping 6.2 WAR. The next best might be Hank Conger. Stay away, guys need to learn to catch in college, not in the minors.
  16. Well he may say that, but the scouts are much more important to Klaw than he is to them. In fact if I was an orgainzation, I'd play my cards close to the vest, Klaw wouldnt get much from me. Mentioning that, it strikes me that the Twins seem to be just such an organization, and Klaw isn't always the kindest to the Twins. Those two things are likely unrelated, but the guy does seem to have a bit of a vindictive streak. That being said, with Gammons reporting the same thing clearly there should be some hesitation. Though Gammons' report shows concern about his defense, I wonder what his source's judgment of his offense is. It's not a popular opinion, but if "may struggle" means below average, I'm fine with that if the bat plays.
  17. Wimmers wasn't looking like a fast track guy long before he got injured. The "quick to the majors" bit is much less predictable than draft wonks pretend. Still as cmb0252 said, I could care less about how quick they get to the majors, get the best upside. Nola will not have the most upside, not sure Turner will either.
  18. I don't think we're really in disagreement, I want the top ceiling guy, but if we're talking about BPA regardless of organizational position depth, I think that should mean go after the best hitter. Rarely can anyone guarantee a hitter will hold his position at the MLB level. I've been making the Andrus and his low ceiling comp for awhile. If his defensive or speed tool had never developed he would have flopped. Get the guy with the most tools, but weigh the ones associated with the bat more strongly. I actually am more ambivalent about defensive position, I know it's not popular, but I'd rather have the best hitter than I'd rather have a "pretty good hitter for position x"
  19. I would too, his write up may be similar to Gibson, but Gibson wouldn't have been a good value at #5 either. And that's aside from the fact that Nola's write up also sounds like Alex Wimmers. In fact the write up might actually have been recycled from Alex Wimmers. If the first positive listed for a pitcher is "good control" I'll pass. Saying a pitcher has good control is like saying "she has a good personality" instead of "she's hot" about your buddy's girlfriend. The first positive attribute about a pitcher I want at # 5 is "overpowering" "misses bats" or "devastating breaking ball."
  20. Yeah, Mike's a good reporter. These guys need to write some human interest stuff also. They can't just tweet rumors all day, that's bush league journalism anyway if you ask me. Those kinds of reports also have an accuracy rate of about 20% tops if I was to guess.
  21. I agree, payroll shouldn't be a concern and there should be room to increase it, but as you said, what will stop them is their own long held reluctance. If we want to consider future free agents however, we do have to take into account the Twins long held reluctance to go beyond a comfortable payroll. We've complained about the Twins reluctance to spend nearly every year there have been internet forms to complain on. I don't think we should assume those concerns won't be there next year or the year after.
  22. But you're only thinking short term where the money is concerned. If the Twins payroll is $95 million because of Drew in 2015, can we really expect the Twins to chase after James Shields, Justin Masterson or Jon Lester? We then need to ask the same question about 2016 as Drew is going to require a 3 year commitment. This isn't the NFL, you can't just cut him and wipe that salary off the books when he's no longer useful or when his salary becomes a payroll hindrance.
  23. Many Hispanic players make it big yet their families remain in the homeland as I'm sure it would be difficult to leave everything you know. However I wonder if there is an impetus to leave if your home country is in dire straights. If so, you really have to cheer for these guys to make the big leagues which would provide the financial ability to bring family over should they so choose.
  24. Good write up John, but I'm still skeptical. As has been mentioned, I think it has more to do with the pitchers. Umpires already have preconceived ideas and biases about the pitchers. If the umpire already has it in his mind that the pitcher is wild or young, I doubt catcher manipulation will work well. On the flip side, well I'm guessing Greg Maddox's personal catchers through the years would be ranked among the elite at framing if the data was available.
  25. I'd go with over also, but it's also going to depend on Spring results. I don't know that the decision to send Gibson to the minor league bamp was the original plan. If I remember correctly, he started off with a couple of good outings followed by two poor ones. At that point he was sent. Like Hicks, I'd bet if Sano is crushing it, he sticks around, and while we're all pretty sure he won't make the team, if Gardy wants him (or more accurately doesn't want Plouffe) Sano might stick around for the extended look even if Ryan won't bring him north out of the gate under any circumstances.
