  1. http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/49930/twins-of-byron-buxton Looks like Sportsnation has a chat with BB at 1:30 today. Bonus: Buck is curretnly gracing the front page of ESPN's site.
  2. I also don't put much stock into framing stats as they make the assumption that an umpire doesn't already have a preconcieved notion of the pitchers strike zone tendancies. This however I can buy. A breakdown of K% and BB% compared to his teamates catching the same pitchers is persuasive. The only thing it doesn't account for is possiblity of pitchers using (or not using) Suzuki as their personal catcher, ala Scott Erickson and Junior Ortiz, Francisco Liriano and Drew Butera. However sub-par pitchers (those that would make inflate/deflate Suzukis BB and K numbers) don't generally get personal catchers.
  3. BP also was among the lowest of Sano's rankings last year too. The seem to value shortstops and defense much more than others.
  4. Good stuff, and they do draw well. I recall the Expos calling PR home for part of their final season. Not a great economy surely, but a strong enough fan base for MLB to consider a semi-permanent franchise.
  5. I would also think OBP improvements may correspond to any positive development of Sano and Arcia batting behind Mauer.
  6. I agree with this. Still, while his health hasn't caused him to miss time recently, as far as I know he still has been pitching with a torn UCL for about five years. Is that something that will eventually give out? A cynical person may think it finally gets worked on after he finally gets his big payday, not that I'm that cynical person.
  7. Yeah Sano looks to be more Scott Rolen than Pablo Sandoval on the 250 lb 3B body type scale.
  8. Hope is dangerous and only wishful speculation. Stick to stats and facts.
  9. I don't disagree that Drew is a better player than Florimon. I disagree that it is wise to give a guy a three year deal when the gulf between them will likely be negligible by the end of the contract.
  10. That makes Florimon unplayable also. But Florimon's awfulness shouldn't automatically make a $5 million per year player worth $10 million. I understand paying more when you're desperate but that mark up is just way too much particularly the years being requested.
  11. He is expected to hit lower against lefties, but he is virtually unplayable against them Mauer is still an above average hitter. Just because he's a better hitter than Florimon doesn't mean you pay him 2x his worth. If he settles for a one year prove-it deal I'm on board, but this kind of player shouldn't get multiple years anymore.
  12. Drew had a 3.1 WAR last year because WAR is heavily biased to aid shortstops. You know who had a 2.1 WAR last year? Pedro Florimon. WAR may show total value, but the Twins don't need to look at total value, they need to look at offensive value as Drew would not be a defensive upgrade over Florimon. Drew's declining offense is not worth $10 million and though none of us here care about that $10 million this year, I and many others DO care about that $10 million next year and the year after. I don't want to tie up that future money as the Twins have now shown a willingness to spend in free agency. There WILL be guys who are actually worth that kind of investment later.
  13. He hasn't had a .681 OPS against lefties since 2010. He's declining and fast. His production vs lefties has fallen off the cliff the last two years, he can't stay healthy and his K% has jumped from the teens to 23% and 24% the last two years. If this wasn't a well known SS, which the Twins desperately need, I think almost all of us would be yelling to stay away. He's not at the beginning of his decline phase, he's well on his way to the bottom. His vs. RHP production at Fenway Park is masking huge indicators that this guy is almost through in this league. I'd bet good money this will be the last MLB contract offered to Drew, it's over.
  14. You realize you are then arguing that Drew isn't a platoon type of player simply because of the Twins incompetence at developing middle infielders? With that arguement, then Samuel Deduno is an ace because he was the Twins best starter last year. I'd rather look at the last three years to make a judgment than I would 2010 and before. Recent trends are obviously more likely to continue than trends that happened last decade. If you insist, I will use more than his 2013 splits. Here is his vs. lefty slash from 2012: .198/.260/.302. Trend, not outlier. He does hit righties well (at hitter friendly Fenway Park: road splits .222/.295/.392), but if we're generous and assume he will be able to play 130 games, we're still looking at less than 100 games where he will A) be healthy enough to play, and be hitting against right-handed pitchers. Why would Ryan want to be on the hook for multiple years at $10 million for that kind of player?
  15. Maybe he'll let Bill Smith handle this one then. He was more than eager to swipe Sano from under the nose of Pittsburgh.
  16. No, it's Drew's awful splits against lefties and his inability to stay on the field that souns the alarms. He needs to be a platoon player; a guy who hasn't played 130 games in four years and puts up .196/.246/.340 against lefties shouldn't be making much more than Jamey Carroll but his agent is Scott Boras so he'll get closer to Troy Tulowitzki.
  17. Here's the enitre 2nd Tweet from Wolfson: (1 of 2) Gardy: "Rob just called me the other day & told me they were gonna make another run at a guy & I'm like wow that's pretty good..." Let's not get too excited. The key word phrase there might be "the other day." If asked two days ago, I would have thought Garza was the name. In that case the Twins may have circled back, failed to give the 4th year and the ship sailed.
  18. So not taking a lowball offer (or no offer) to stay with the team is worse than beating and choking your wife. Glad to know where you stand on these issues.
  19. Perhaps I'm biased, but I wouldn't trade Rosario, Pinto, Thorpe or Polanco for too many of the guys 80-100.
  20. As much as I like Greg Gagne and Eddie Guradado, I think the standards are already kind of low. Considering Gladden's off field contributions since he retired, he's probably already more deserving. I don't like that the Twins (and Vikings) feel that SOMEONE has to be added every year. How about we cool the jets on this for the time being and then get ready for the strong years when Santana, Hunter, Nathan, Mauer, Morenau, Cuddyer and Gardenhire are due.
  21. When the Twins signed Nolasco there was no way to know that Garza would be going for this price. I'd have preferred Garza but had the Twins only signed Hughes and Pelfrey at this point plenty of us would have been disappointed about the team's lack of activity. As it turned out, the Twins couldn't be aggressive AND sign Garza, it was a Catch-22 for them.
  22. The Twins currently do have some good pieces in the pen, which is all the more reason to flip some of them for non-40 man prospects.
  23. I don't think we even have to ask for a rush, at least not in the case of Sano. With Plouffe's propensity for finding Gardy's doghouse, I'd say there's a very strong chance Sano gets called up early whether he's ready or not.
  24. I'm insulted by this slight toward Jeff Reboulet.
  25. This is a bad deal simply because the market was laughably inflated. Tanaka was not orignially pegged as the top free agent arm, in fact he was originally such a dark horse that the Twins were connected to him. Now a guy who's never pitched in the MLB and has been seriously abused in the NPL in terms of both innings and pitches per game is going to make $50?, $60?, $70 million more than the more accomplished Garza, Jiminez and Santana? Ha, suckers. Sure the Yankees can afford the money, but there's only 25 roster spots, you don't have a ton of flexibility when you have four unmovalbe albatross'.
