1. He was a highly disappointing player. We need to hold our 19th round draft picks to higher standards.
2. I don't like pitch framing stats either because it doesn't take into account the natural predjudices of umpires, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. If umpires already have a preconcieved notion that a young/inexperienced/wild pitcher is going to be all over the place, I don't think pitch framing helps a whole lot as the umpire is already expecting pitches to be outside the zone. I honestly haven't thought much about Suzuki's defensive game, but considering the above theory, the A's have run out Bartolo Colon and a bunch of young pups the last two years. Youngsters don't generally get the benefit of the doubt from an umpire and I'm not sure pitch framing would have a huge effect in convincing an umpire otherwise. Greg Maddox got every borderline call but I think that had more to do with his reputation than it did his personal catcher du jour's framing skills.
3. A list of Twins 1st round picks this century:
2013 Kohl Stewart - HS 2012 Byron Buxton - HS 2012 *Jose Berrios - HS 2012 *Luke Bard - 4Yr 2011 Levi Michael - 4Yr 2011 *Travis Harrison - HS 2011 *Hudson Boyd - HS 2010 Alex Wimmers - 4Yr 2009 Kyle Gibson - 4Yr 2009 *Matt Bashore - 4Yr 2008 Aaron Hicks - HS 2008 *Carlos Gutierrez - 4Yr 2008 *Shooter Hunt - 4Yr 2007 Ben Revere - HS 2006 Chris Parmelee - HS 2005 Matt Garza - 4Yr 2005 *Hank Sanchez - HS 2004 Trevor Plouffe - HS 2004 *Glen Perkins - 4Yr 2004 *Kyle Waldrop - HS 2004 *Matt Fox - 4Yr 2004 *Jay Rainville - HS 2003 Matt Moses - HS 2002 Denard Span - HS 2001 Joe Mauer - HS 2000 Adam Johnson - 4Yr 2000 *Aaron Heilman - 4Yr
Even if we're extremely generous and say the jury's still out on guys drafted after 2007, I count Perkins and Garza vs Mauer, Span, Plouffe, Parmelee and Revere. Even if you toss out Parmelee, the Twins had more success 2000-2007 drafting HS kids in the 1st round. If we looked at the developing guys we still have some hope will turn into MLBers, it seems as though college players Gibson and perhaps Bard are all that's standing compared to Hicks, Harrison, Berrios, Buxton and Stewart. League wide maybe college players are better, but the Twins seem to do better identifying the HS kids, at least the more well known guys who go in the 1st round.
4. Last year Manaea was in the same position as Hoffman and by June we were starting to wonder if Manaea would fall to the Twins in the 2nd round. Odds are Hoffman will be picked high but it's no lock. Rodon either. The Pirates picked Appel at #8 just two drafts ago.
5. For quite some time I told people that I saw a great 2-0 game between Orel Hershiser and Nolan Ryan which was part of Hershiser's record scoreless innings streak. After researching it over a decade later, I realized this Hershiser shutout took place previous to his record streak. However while that was disappointing, my fact checking help discover that at that game I witnessed the first of Craig Biggio's 3,060 hits.
6. Hmm, that depends on if you consider Valencia professional.
7. Bonus in signing Suzuki: He has proven to be very tradable over the last two years. Not that the Twins should do so, but it's nice to have that option.
8. I'm sure Baker's injury history was under consideration, but I'm more inclined to believe that the contracts the Twins gave to Pelfrey and Correia had more to do with the way the Cubs jumped on the market and manipulated it at the begining of free agency. The Cubs wanted the higher upside Baker, but had their preference been Pelfrey, I think the more agressive Cubs would have had him and the Twins then perhaps would have re-signed Baker. I don't know that the Twins preferred Pelfrey over Baker as much as I think the Cubs shocked everyone by setting the market for backend/reclamation project pitchers suddenly and aggessively before the Twins or other teams were prepared to react.
9. I don't think the 5th starter candidates get packaged together. I think one of them gets packaged with a reliever like Duensing/Swarzak/Burton or Fein. Perhaps another starter gets packaged with Plouffe. His days at 3B are numbered and the Twins have been talking about Mark Reynolds.
10. I would have been upset if the team didn't get upgrades for the pitching staff in free agency, but I'm OK if the plan for offensive upgrades is simply expecting improvement/bouncebacks/arrivals from guys like Arcia, Hicks, Willingham, Plouffe and Sano. Surely all won't shine but if a couple produce better than they did last year the offense will be improved.
11. This team has nothing but stability. It's had the same old white men in charge for over two decades. I'm not against Anthony getting the job, but only if he's the best candidate. They implied they were doing away with the country club last year, or did that only apply to players? I don't like this, what if a superior external candidate is available and willing to take this job? This isn't a monarchy, this is a capitalistic enterprise, there should not be a line of succession. There needs to be an extensive search for the best possible leader and if it ends up being Anthony, great, I might even cheer for him to get it, but it should not be a given.
12. If we grade this trade based on where each player finished in ROY voting, the Royals clearly won. 3rd place is better than 8th place. Congrats Royals, well done.
13. I would have given Doumit away to clear roster space, I'm not sure what the gripe is. I'm not a Gilmartin fan, but still I love this. Just because I don't think the guy has much of a ceiling, I can recognize that others see his potential. Besides, getting a pitcher who made it to AAA in only two professional years seems more impressive than the Twins stable of pitchers who took closer to a decade to get there. Besides, Jonathan Mayo still ranks him the Braves #4 prospect. That seems high to me but so what? The Twins are lucky to get a top #15 prospect for Doumit.
14. One of the best things about this to me is that being drafted in 2011, Gilmartin shouldn't require a 40 man spot. I'm not big on soft-tossing lefties, but I'm just fine getting rid of the Twins expendable players in exchange for guys who are only one year removed from positive endorsements.
15. Wow, I'm not a big Gilmartin fan but plenty of others have been. I was all for moving Doumit simply to clear up the RF/1B/DH mess that is starting to be bothersome, I was never expecting a legit return. I wonder if this was in the works when the Twins resigned Kubel. It would make a little more sense. If so, I wonder if the Twins reported interest in a fourth free agent pitcher and Mark Reynolds is a preview of possible Worley/Diamond/Gibson/Correia and Plouffe trades.
16. Perhaps I'm alone, but I'm not expecting great defensive work from a RF and the range of such a player is even less of a concern to me. Has anyone seen Target Field? RF has next to no foul territory and you could parallel park one, maybe two, RV's between the wall and the infield dirt. Also, I'm afraid to say that I think Buddy Hackett died several years back.
17. I'm guessing Rochester NY wouldn't agree to disband their club which they'd need to do to allow Nashville to join the IL. The MLB clubs don't get to dictate which cities have teams in which leagues and which cities lose their teams.
18. I'd like to take a chance on Santana, but this is the rub. It was reported earlier that Santana was going to have an audition for teams in January hoping to generate interest in a MLB contract. If he signed a minor league deal prior to that, it clearly means he knows his throwing session will not be up to snuff which of course does not bode well for his chances of recovery.
19. Whoa, whoa whoa. It was only a month ago that Ryan said Duensing was a possiblity to start! Surely he's leading the pack heading down to Ft. Myers.
20. The backend starters and bullpen guys should be packaged together in my opinion. The return should be better even if only minimally better. The Twins can swap two 40-man spots for one or maybe none if the return is youngsters. I didn't like the Lirano/Morneau trades simply because the Twins were on the wrong end of those equations.
21. There doesn't seem to be room for Colabello, though if it is assumed Willingham and Plouffe remain starters and Doumit is the main DH, Colabello really would be the only RH bench bat. Parmelee being left handed makes less sense roster wise, but still may hold a twinkle of potential. If they were going to axe a pitcher, it should be Johnson or Albers. Worley and Diamond could be candidates, but they may still be able to be moved once more of the free agent pitchers sign and some teams are still left thinking about outside the box options.
22. Familiarity with the club, local ties, history of past success here? Probably the same reasons the Twins are interested. While I agree that Gardy may not play this straight, he doesn't decide the roster. I don't think Ryan puts Kubel on the 25 man unless he clearly wins the job. As as far as Kubel saying he is confident he will win a spot, what else would he say? Ryan probably would not say the same if asked. It's not like Parmelee is new here, wouldn't the club have the same level of loyalty to a guy who's been here, what, nine years? If we are finally starting to trust that Ryan is doing right by the club in free agency, I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt to play this honestly with the 25th roster spot.
23. With lefties Mauer and Arcia almost surely getting a lot of playing time and Doumit getting a nice paycheck, I always assumed that Parmelee was always going to be the odd lefty out, I figured he would be a longshot to be on the roster come opening day. I don't think it lessens his chances much just because Kubel is on board. Kubel can be sent to Rochester, Parmelee can't, Kubel will have to be great in spring training or Parmelee will have to be a train wreck for Kubel to make the team. If either of those things happen, well then there's really nothing to argue about, the best man won. Regardless, I don't think Kubel will cut into Parmelee's playing time, because, I'm inclined to think if Kubel is at the MLB level with the Twins, Parmelee will be somewhere else.
24. Gardy can give his input for the 25 man roster, but it's Ryan's decision to make. If there is a log jam with no clear cut top dogs come opening day, Kubel will be the odd man out. Kubel can be sent to Rochester, Parmelee, Colabello and Doumit cannot without losing them. Than the risk is the incompetent manager, not the player. No reason he has to play if he's terrible. Should we also be afraid that the Eric Fryer will play 150 games at catcher?
25. Hendriks got claimed by one of the teams with the highest waiver priorities. I would think other teams would also have claimed him then also. Too bad the Twins couldn't work out any kind of trade for a non-roster player.
