  1. https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/494858173170610176 Sigh, well of course. If the players and the coaches who are all under-performing are demanding it, why shouldn't you listen to them by commiting long term to a guy having a career year on the wrong side of 30.
  2. I can't wait to see Vargas play CF!
  3. He's been in AAA since the A's got Samardzija and Hammel.
  4. So it's official? The Redwings have a superior pitching staff to the Twins? It's probably not even close really.
  5. Yeah, I'm all for the move, it was a steal as Fuld was just as likely to turn into a pumpkin, probably even more likely. I don't want him blocking Meyer and May, but really, it's Pino, Johnson, Darnell and Correia blocking them, Milone just adds an extra layer, or extra excuse depending on how cynical one is. I can't stress it enough though, great move, even if I'm not totally sold on the ulitmate consequences.
  6. Hughes can miss some bats, Gibson is getting better. Regardless, pitchers who can't strike guys out have to rely on luck and defense, two things the Twins are short on. Trading him for Fuld is a great move, who would have thought Ryan could have gotten anything of value for him, especially an actual living breathing starting pitcher? Still, these kinds of pitchers are a dime a dozen and the Twins really don't need more. He's better than most they have, but he still can't miss many bats.
  7. Ha, traded for Sam Fuld?! I liked Fuld as a stop gap but would give him up in a trade in a heartbeat. Danny Santana full time CF? Welcome back Aaron Hicks? What happens now?
  8. That's nice, we'll see how well that ERA and terrible K/9 translates away from Oakland. Again, I like the move, as long as it isn't another road block for the guys we hope are the pitchers of the future.
  9. One can never have too many #5 pitchers. Had to get him in case Correia gets moved, how else could you justify blocking Meyer and May if that happened? For the record I don't mind the move as long as the Twins side of the trade was marginal AND Meyer and May do not have to jump over him.
  10. I don't think the Twins were ever going to give up the draft pick for a player who had a QO, especially not for a player getting a one year deal and extra especially not for a confirmed steroid user who would bring them heat from the clean and sober Minnesota grandparents who make up 95% of the fan base.
  11. Good move by the A's. They only had Cespedes under contract for one more season and it looks like this year is as good as any for the A's to take home the trophy. While Cespedes is a nice player and has some fun HR derby power, he never was much of a fit in Oakland with his low BB/OBP numbers. For all his accolades he only has a .767 OPS this year, a little better than his .737 last year. He seems to have a better reputation than he deserves.
  12. This year? I can't remember when they made someone available of any value at the deadline.
  13. The report is that they aren't dealing him before July 31st, not that they aren't dealing him at all. They are almost surely gambling that he will increase his value in the next month and move him after the deadline. It is frustrating that every year bad teams have good talent that they can move for nice returns at the deadline, and every year the Twins are terrible and have next to nothing to move. It does speak poorly of the Twins front office that they rarely have any assets to swap this time of year, of course it speaks just as poorly about the field staffs of the other losing teams. If the Red Sox, Cubs, Padres, Rangers and Indians have players this coveted, they should probably be playing better baseball. On a somewhat related note, Cleveland moved Justin Masterson and is close to dealing Asdrubal Cabrera. That takes some guts seeing as they are only a half game under .500. Can anyone imagine the Twins doing that, even if it's the smart move?
  14. I'm glad he's fine, but let's get the eval anyway. I know Ft. Myers has a ton of retirees, but I'm guessing they can still find at least one doctor willing to squeeze him. Edit: I guess I'm not sure on the population of the elderly in Conneticut, but perhaps that would be a more appropriate place for a checkup
  15. I would think so, plus the yoga stuff is supposed to keep you limber and healthy until you're 150, or so the yoga types like to preach.
  16. Everything about this screams luck, but this is also what he was doing when he was pitching well for the Phillies. His GB% was low and his swing/strike % is also low, but those were the red flags when the Twins traded for him. His overall contact% is high and his zone contact% is at an all-time high, but his outside zone contact% is also high as is the outside zone swing%. I haven't seen him pitch, but if he's getting high contact and high swing rates both inside and outside the zone, it seems to me that indicates he's locating well and peppering the corners. He's throwing a lot of strikes, but when he's not, they're close enough to induce swings, and of course pitches on the edge of the zone or just off of it would naturally produce a low BABIP. Basically it's the PTC approach the Twins seem to embrace.
  17. Great story, who's not going to cheer for this guy?! The timing of this development couldn't have worked out better for the Twins, and frankly, for the Twins, unlucky and poor timing may be the biggest curse this franchise has. I was previously critical not that the Twins didn't use all their draft money by signing the lowly picked HS kids, but that they didn't draft many HS kids worth signing early. By what seems like dumb luck, this guy figures it out and becomes worth the signing bonus AFTER the window of opportunity to sign the draft picks expire, which of course also happens to be the same time that nearly every other team has blown their draft signing allotments. As for Paulson, that kind of work ethic so often preceeds success. He has a long way to go, and almost surely he will struggle early, but it's pretty exciting to think of what could develop with proper coaching.
  18. This club isn't going to win if it doesn't start taking risks. I'd think if the Twins couldn't find dozens of HS kids worth an early round pick who would sign if the team offered the extra 200K, then the club wasn't doing it's research.
  19. Agree. I don't buy McCarthy's 1.5 point jump in K/9 in his contract year. He was terrible in AZ, he was mediocre to terrible in OAK and CHI, his three nice starts in NY aren't going to convince me. Even 10 nice starts aren't going to convince me that he won't turn into a pumpkin again once after his contract year is over. Go for upside or go home with free agent pitchers.
  20. Frustrating for sure. Cuban free agents have been the safest gamble in terms of production the last half decade. Of the bigger named players, how many have bombed so far? Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, anyone else? I'm sure there are more but still great odds considering the bust rate of all other avenues for getting talent. Of course after years of our sports teams getting kicked in the berries repeatedly, I'm sure many of you feel the same as me. When the Twins finally do sign a Cuban for decent money, he'll be the guy who completely falls on his face.
  21. Which wrist did Buxton get hit on this time? I know this next suggestion sounds impatient, but it isn't. Perhaps Buxton should get promoted to Rochester and not New Britain. I know a double jump in the minors is pretty unheard of around here except in emergency situations, but as mentioned, New Britain is circling the drain while Rochester is in a playoff push. Let's get Buxton in that kind of atmosphere. Jumping Hicks might be the final nail in what appears to be a fragile physical and mental development stage, but who knows, maybe it would motivate Hicks instead of crush him. Either way, Hicks is no longer the priority and while the "seniority" principle still appears to be in place for pitchers, it clearly isn't for the bats. Also, while many of us are frustrated with how the Twins are handling their top pitching prospects, there does not seem to be the same hesitancy with the batters. Buxton was supposed to be a possibility in the later half of 2014, even if slim. The CF situation is still bleak at the MLB level. I know many would disagree, but I'll bet the Twins would actually welcome the possibility of Buxton winning the CF job in spring training next year (or maybe a month later when they won't lose a year of his services) and the best way for that to happer would be to have him knocking at the door in AAA.
  22. Sounds good to me. Too bad Bowden's a crazy old coot who spews ideas like this with no basis or inside information, than his geezer logic gets re-broadcasted as if it's a bonifide possibility. ESPN should really put a disclaimer up when they use him. I'd be fine with this return. Really, I'll take any return that doesn't require a 40-man spot. If a Yangervis Solarte type is the return I tell the Yankees to screw off as I'd rather let Willingham walk at the end of the season and not have to think one second further about dealing with more dead weight on the 40-man.
  23. Ha, well I guess Kubel and Colabello offset the loss of Willingham and Arcia, but that's only because Willingham and Arcia are huge disappointments this year. I wouldn't exactly say Kubel and Colabello were "fine" so much as I'd say the shoes they had to fill were a child's size 5.
  24. Unfortunately, shifts do jack when every other batted ball is a scorcher off the wall.
  25. It just seemed odd that he got singled out when there are issues with 80% of the 40-man roster.
