  1. Agreed. History shows that you need to put pressure on Germans early and often before things get out of control. Poland would apprciate the move.
  2. I hear this a lot from fans and from the organization but I just don't get it. Why is it OK for Meyer to "risk" pitching in meaningless games at Rochester but not at the MLB level? I'd think if there was truely any worry about his arm and his workload, everyone should want him to pitch his meaningless games getting acclimated to the MLB level, unless for some reason the MLB level is more dangerous. I don't think it is, it's not like Bill Veeck is around anymore putting up strange publicity hungry promotions like Grizzly Bear-Pitching Coach Day.
  3. Agreed. Defense is something that still is best evaluated by the eye test. Defensive metrics are just way too flawed. Also, my eye test tells me that Plouffe, Arcia and Parmelee are much better in the field this year. Still, look for offense first and worry about the defense later. If DH was already occupied and Kennys Vargas had to play 1B everyday, would any of us really be asking for him to be replaced? His defense was why he wasn't on (m)any top prospect rankings yet now that he's here we're hoping he is a cornerstone of the rebuild.
  4. Dozier would never get through waivers, and while he probably has good value, it's not nearly as high as Twins fans would like to think. Besides, his .250 BABIP and strong 18% K rate would suggest he actually could hit and get on base much, much better than he is now, meaning his value absolutely could go up.
  5. He throws reasonably hard but still doesn't miss bats. Sometimes guys figure it out later in the pen, but often not. Maybe he has a ceiling of a Jon Rauch or Matt Capps, though those kinds of pitchers, even when pitching well, are always walking a tightrope hovering just above utter disaster.
  6. Yeah, love the Hawk. He and Jason Giambi are the only active players who shared the field with Kirby Puckett. That there's two such players seems crazy, as it seems longer than 20 years ago. I would expect Hawk to be the last next year.
  7. And JJ Hardy and Torii Hunter. Who knows how much of it is true, maybe none of it. However there's a lot of cooks in the kitchen at Target Field, so the chances are good that where there's smoke there's fire, even if it's small and contained to one or two voices.
  8. Casual Friday? http://www.creatingcultureworldwide.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/aj-pier.jpg
  9. I assume that is you mean they hit to no fields? I agree that something did seem to change once Hardy left. The Twins let Willingham grip it and rip it to LF and Plouffe did the same two years ago. Plouffe isn't using that approach any longer, but without more info, we probably won't be able to say if it's because of his perogative or the team's. Still, I'd like someone in the organization to remain vigiliant against cookie cutter hitting regardless of how many instructors, front office personell or coaches prefer that idea. It may be one, or it may be most, but no matter, someone's got to speak up for common sense even if common sense is in the majority these days.
  10. And has anyone noticed that both Danny Valencia and Delmon Young seem to be more than functional ballplayers while platooning?
  11. While Arcia's is probably not the mouth to gain advice from at the moment, it is refreshing to see someone not towing the the old company line. Recognizing a pitch will be outside and waiting on it to slap it the other way is much harder than many people seem to think. If one of the greatest pure hitters in Twins history, Joe Mauer, has to sacrifice nearly all his power in his 6'5" 230 lb frame to use all fields, we should probably expect even worse results for guys without his level of hitting talent. I'd love to see all these guys being able to go the other way while putting balls into any and every seat between the foul poles, but using all fields is just not an ability every baseball player can or should embrace. Not every player can bunt, not every player can steal a base, not every player can make a throw to home from right field. If Oswaldo Arcia is the only member of the team that's willing to stand up to the idea this particular skill is also not universal, well I guess I'm glad it's him rather than no one. I've heard enough from these voices once they LEAVE the Twins.
  12. Ha, yes! I was just going to post that we seem to have finally found a topic that Twins Daily can agree on!
  13. I don't think a front office would be viewed with much credibility if they fire a manager when they were the ones putting together the lineup. If they want to insist on who plays when and where, they would need to fire the manager midseason.
  14. Hard to believe he's only 64. Managing the Twins sure has a way of aging a guy. La Rusa, Torre and Cox all managed to the age of 66 or older and occupy spots 3-5 on the all time wins list. Combined Kelly and Gardenhire sit two wins behind Sparky Anderson who is in 6th place. Just saying.
  15. Yeah, I think it was pretty universal that every Twins fan wanted Jim Thome basically every chance he was available. Hell, even when he wasn't available. Fun fact: Jim Thome's second best single season OPS+ was a whopping 182. He produced that season in 2010 at the age of 39 for the Minnesota Twins.
  16. Nice pic. It might be a classic if not for Danny Valencia lurking behind Cuddyer.
  17. I think you're making the assumption that Gardenhire and the front office would use players exactly the same. Gardenhire is managing for his job, if he thinks his best lineup has Santana in CF and Escobar at SS that's how he's going to play it. That doesn't mean that the front office wouldn't prefer Santana to play SS for developmental reasons. These kinds of disconnects are always going to happen when you have a manager on the hot seat.
  18. Cabrera has actually been a pretty terrible defender for years. However, I've mentioned before, terrible defense seems to only be given serious consideration at the development stages. If Cabrera and his awful defense were in A ball, he'd be moved to 3B pronto, but since he's already at the MLB level, someone will still pay him to play SS next year. It doesn't make much sense to me, but I think it lends to the belief that defense is overrated. If poor defense was really costing teams numerous games the on-field staff would intervene and reposition/bench said poor defender. It's not costing that many games, so managers simply roll their eyes at the extra ball that gets to the outfield every 8 games or so. More on topic; I think Escobar is playing above his head, but I think Cabrera's time as a league average SS are over so I don't know that you'd get much more production from the free agent. I ride with Santana/Escobar until Polanco or Gordon are ready understanding that there is a distinct possbility all will flop.
  19. Great news, big Vikings fan clearly. Baseball's my first love but I still love my football. It seems to me that baseball forums (even this one!) are always much more civilized and grammaticly pleasing than football forums, so I'm guessing the moderators will have their hands full! I can't wait to check it out but I hope it has the same quality contributors we have here. Here's hoping the posters are similar to this site, as in they state opinions with supporting justifications and the posts aren't lacking capitalization and puncuation.
  20. It looked bad, and there's a good chance he'll be shut down for the year, but as long as he's responsive and has full mobility, I feel better.
  21. I think you just need to Google, -streaming, playing, children, balls-. Then when the FBI comes to look at your computer, you can ask them if they know.
  22. The Twins really need to start getting into extra innings games. Santana needs to average 5.7 PA per game for the rest of the season to qualify for the batting title. Seems doable if the team averages 12 innings a game.
  23. I'm very happy with his production this year, but I'm not holding my breath that it's going to continue. That OBP is pretty poor all things considered. With little power and a history of poor OBP, it would seem that he will be extremely prone to inconsistancy. Santana probably has the same issues, though perhaps more upside. Both are probably just keeping the seat warm for Jorge Polanco who looks to have pretty strong OBP skills for a middle infielder.
